Complex and compelling:
I quickly became invested in the story and wanted to just scoop up Elise and Sawyer and be there for them. It was intense and had me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. The pacing was well done and I was madly turning pages to find out what was going to happen next. You could feel the depth of Elise's pain, confusion and anger at God and I enjoyed seeing her finally come to find healing and comfort in the arms of Christ.
I look forward to reading more books from this very talented author.

This is my first read by this author and I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it. The mystery was very good. Elise reads lips and is a witness to a murder being planned.

Things take off after this involving the dangerous situation she and her son are now in. Her son is deaf which makes things more difficult.

It was a great plot and I loved trying to figure things out. It wasn't your typical mystery where a female is in danger, the handsome detective shows up, saves her life and they fall in love in two weeks. No romance in this book which was refreshing.

Here comes the however. Some things made no sense to me at all. These things ruined some of the enjoyment of the book. Elise gets threats against her and her son. Someone was in the house with her talking pictures. Boxes of different things are left as threats. A snake is put in her son's bed. A man tries to pick up her son at school. Someone was hiding outside her house watching her. What does she do? She lets her son go in the back yard to play by himself. He can't even yell for help as he is deaf and mute. An FBI man shows up to talk to her. She doesn't even face the back yard to watch her son. What happens next is predictable. He's kidnapped.

Later while the FBI is trying to find her son she starts remembering when he was born. She thinks about all his birthdays and the first time she heard him say da-da and ma-ma. He's been deaf and mute since birth. How is this possible?

Also, the FBI is so incompetent that Elise, her sister in law and a reporter friend have to give them all the information they can't figure out. Elise and her friends even have to solve the crime. These inconsistencies bother me.

Well, there's my likes and dislikes.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley for my honest opinion.

Overwrought, child in danger mystery. I chose this because I’ve been an ASL interpreter for 35 years and like to see what’s being said about the Deaf world. I know it was a key plot point but I have never known a hearing person who was skilled at speech reading. We don’t need to be so it really doesn’t develop. Also, Deaf culture frowns on the use of the word “mute” in relation to anyone who is deaf.

This is a fast paced and very emotionally taut read. There is a very overt Christian overtone. I liked the view of law enforcement and the judicial system. The tech used in the book is pretty much standard in the Deaf world. I would not recommend this especially to my Deaf friends as I can already see what they would find objectionable. There is no outright cultural misstep, just a “deaf child in peril” trope.,

Elise is a widow and her young son is deaf. She makes her living interpreting for hearings at the State Capitol building. She sees someone in the lobby speaking on the phone about a plot to murder a well known state senator. She is a very good lip reader and understands what he is saying even though he is across the room. She wakes up the next morning to news that her mother in law was murdered. Her mother-in-law was the senator the man had been speaking about. What ensues is dealing with FBI agents who consider her a suspect, being stalked by someone who wants her to keep silent, and she and her friends and family trying to search out the truth for themselves.

This story was well crafted. I liked the character development and the fact that the author featured a much loved special needs child in the story.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Robin Caroll has long been a favorite author of mine. Dead Silence is not a romance, unless you count the pure love Elise Carmichael has for her son who happens to be deaf, but it is an amazing story of intrigue and suspense. Elise is a sign language interpreter but also adept at lip-reading. She accidentally “over-hears” something via lip-reading that ends up wreaking dangerous havoc on her life and her son’s life. This action-packed ride of a novel keeps you hanging on in all the right places and holds you there to the end. Kudos to Robin Caroll for another well-crafted tale of mayhem and mystery!

I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley, but this review is my own opinion.

This book is an excellent read! It grabbed my attention from the very beginning pages.
Elise, young widow who signs for trials at the courthouse, lip reads a conversation threatening the life of her mother-in-law, a senator and powerful figure. Immediately, Elise and her young son, who is deaf and mute, have their lives turned upside down. What follows is murder, threats, FBI interrogations, and a kidnapping. Through it all, Elise, her sister-in-law, and a new friend who is a reporter, seek to find the truth and put together clues under tremendous pressure.
If you like crime and mystery, this story is for you. The plot is well thought out, and even though I figured out who the bad guy was before the very end, the story will keep you wondering at every turn.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.

What a great idea for a book! I'd never thought about the people who work in courtrooms or the ability to read lips coming into play. The plot begins from the very first page and keeps the reader intrigued through the twists and turns of the story. The characters, the perspective of a deaf person, the mystery... all wrap up for a great read!

After reading this book I now wish I could read lips like Elise! In her case, it only caused trouble for her, though. I appreciated how dedicated Elise is to finding her son, to the point of keeping information from the FBI, but I’m not sure how realistic this is. I was surprised when she trusted the reporter, Wesson Kelly. I kept thinking that Wesson was really in collusion with the kidnapper. I do wish that the author had revealed Wesson’s source at the end of the book. Overall I did really enjoy this book. This is the first Robin Caroll book I’ve read and I plan to read more.

I believe “Dead Silence” by Robin Caroll was the best book I’ve ever read by her! There was something about this book that was so engrossing to me. It hooked me from the first page and continued through the whole book.
“Dead Silence” is a fast paced, suspenseful novel. I could kind of see the way the story was playing out, but there were a few twists I didn’t see coming. The characters were very relatable. There was no romance in this book, just suspense. Usually I read suspense novels with a little romance, but I really enjoyed this one. The romance wasn’t even needed.

The main character is a mother with a deaf son. She reads lips and sees a guard talking about murdering the senator. This starts a mountain of problems for her and her son. This is a mother that will move heaven and earth for her son. I guess, as a mother, I could relate to what she would do to protect her son.

I definitely recommend this book if you love good, clean, suspenseful books. You won’t be disappointed!

In Dead Silence, Robin Caroll's latest novel, court sign language interpreter Elise Carmichael find herself and her deaf and mute son in the crosshairs of someone determined to keep her silent. As a lip reader, Carmichael "hears" a threat against a US Senator only to find the threat realized. When she goes to the authorities, Elise and her son are threatened. Full of action and suspense, the novel follows Elise's crusade to find the killer while trying to stay a step ahead of the threats.

A likeable, smart, down-to-earth woman who's just trying to get on with her life after her Marine husband was killed and trying to protect her young deaf and mute son. Readers are immediately drawn into Elise's story and find themselves cheering for her throughout the book and booking the bad guys. Lots of twists and turns keep readers guessing who is really to blame. But will Elise be able to solve the mystery before it's too late? You'll have to pick up a copy of Dead Silence and find out. Make sure you block out some time because you won't want to put the book down until you're done!

Readers, note: there's no romance in this novel! And it was actually quite refreshing to read a suspenseful mystery novel that was not centered around a romance. Plus, it was great to see a main character who didn't need a man in her life to be successful, to be smart, to have a good support system. It was just a nice change from novels that focus on romance plus mystery. Way to go, Robin Caroll! Give us more like this one.

Note: I received a copy of the book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for this honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Elise had a deaf 7 year old son - because of that fact, she could read lips. She saw a security guard’s lips move to tell an unidentified man in a suit that Lillian York would be “permanently “ taken care of that very night, as was instructed.
Lillian York was a U.S. Senator - and Elise’s mother-in-law!
Just then, Elisa’s phone rang, it was her babysitter, Hallie, saying they were on their way to the hospital because her son, Sawyer had fallen and broken his wrist! Elisa’s high heel broke on her shoe and she limped to the car and rushed to the hospital to be with her son.
The next morning, Elisa was crushed to hear that Lillian York had been found dead at home, and she had been shot twice.
Elisa remembered what she had overheard the day before and she couldn’t believe she had not called the police or the FBI. After a hard day at work, FBI Agents Rodriguez and Wright took her to an office and asked her questions about her whereabouts and her relationship with her mother-in-law. When she told them what she had overheard, they were very accusatory towards her and questioned everything she said.
Then Elise started receiving threats at her home - a dead rat and a doll with three red stitches on its mouth and a note that said “snitches get stitches.”
Who killed her mother-in-law, and who wanted her quiet?

I enjoyed this book and read it quickly. I've not read this author before but now will be looking for more by her. I like mysteries but not gore so this one fit the bill perfectly for me. The main character was relatable, especially if you have questioned where God is in your own life.
Thank you to Net Galley for my copy of this book.

A United States Senator from Arkansas Lillian York is murdered. Her daughter-in-law Elise Carmichael, a court interpreter for the deaf, and Elise’s seven-year-old deaf son, Sawyer are now targets. Dissatisfied with the way the FBI is handling the investigation, Elise resolves to uncover the truth herself with help from her sister-in-law Mary Ellen, step-father-in-law Noland, and an up-and-coming reporter Wesson Kelly. Lip-read eavesdropping, threatening packages, mysterious e-mail files, stalking, and a kidnapping combine to make an easy-to-read, riveting plot that moves at a fitting pace.
Dead Silence captured my attention with the first paragraph and kept it until the very end. The characters in this page-turner are well-developed and engaging. The faith message is prevalent in the story, and Elise’s faith journey through very difficult circumstances is inspiring. I highly recommend this book. Ms. Carroll is a new author to me, and I look forward to reading more of her works.

Dead Silence is a suspenseful thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Oh my heart! It is still beating hard after this emotional roller coaster ride. The heroine is a loving mom who is an interpreter for the deaf in a court of law. She reads lips and sees a man say make a threat against a senator. The senator happens to be her mother in law. Her son is deaf and they both are in danger. I won't go into any more detail because you just have to read it. This is a suspenseful thriller with no romance. The love in this book is the love of a mother for her son and what she will do to keep him safe.

DEAD SILENCE by ROBIN CAROLL is a real page turner - I could not put it down. It is a well written suspense novel with some great characters and an exciting plot. There is also a good Christian message running through the story.
Elise Carmichael and her seven year old son, Sawyer, are under attack after her mother in law, Senator Lilliana York's, murder.
With the support of her sister in law, step father in law and a young reporter, Elise is determined to solve the case in order to protect her deaf and dumb son, who, together with her, seems to have become a target.
I am not going to tell you any more as I do not want to spoil the read for you, excepting to say that I can highly recommend Dead Silence for anyone who enjoys this genre.
