Pros- it is well written, an interesting storyline, some likable characters, you dont need to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy
Cons- time jumps alot which leads to some brokenness of the storyline, Penelope's dialogue seems way to old for a girl of twelve, odd romantic scenes (or I should say there is a hint of romance awkwardly presented)

I'm torn with this book from 'meh' to 'oh I liked it!'. Overall, I did enjoy this book although it was a bit disjointed with the time jumps and back and forth, a lot of dialogue but most of it didnt detract. The premise was good although I found Devlin far too pushy in some scenes which didnt fit when he was so considerate in others. There was not enough romance for being labelled as a romance book I thought. The bedroom scenes were really awkward, starts out tenderly then just ends (not that I need a graphic play by play but they just didnt feel romantic to me).

3.5 stars rounded to 4, not bad, some good points but not outstanding.

My thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy, all opinions are my own

Thanks go to the author and Net Galley for a complimentary copy of Her Seafaring Scoundrel for the purpose of reading and reviewing prior to publication. A Regency romance and book 3 The Crawfords. My opinions are my own and no one has influenced me in any way.

Her Seafaring Scoundrel is an emotionally charged reading experience with engaging character and an intriguing plot. The pacing is fantastic and kept me enmeshed in the story from start to finish.

Lady Cassandra’s character is endearing. She stole my heart from the start. She has not had an easy time. Her betrothed died days before their marriage and she found out she carried his child. Her parents and society cast her off. Her brother buys her cottage where she takes in orphans and other women who find themselves in a similar situation to her. She spends her life running her orphanage and her daughter. She will do anything to ensure Penelope’s happiness.

Devlin Crawford is our hero and is a great character. He’s spent years roaming the high seas, never spending more than a few weeks in England. When he arrives at his brother’s ducal residence, he agrees to attend his ball. He defends Lady Cassandra’s honor and informs the gossip they are betrothed. Although he has no plans to live in England, he does want to protect Cassandra. He has admired her from afar for years.

The romance between Cassandra and Devlin is a rocky road with plenty of emotions going on between them. Cassandra has mourned her Timothy and doesn’t want a true marriage, but the attraction between her and Devlin is too strong to ignore. There’s fantastic sexual tension between them. There’s a totally unexpected twist, which makes this a fantastic read!

If you enjoy Regency romance with amazing characters and an emotionally charged plot, then you will love Her Seafaring Scoundrel as much as I. Ms. Barnes is a talented author, and I’m so glad I agreed to read this. It had been some time since I’d read one of her books. I will be reading the prior books in this great series. Happy reading!

I received Her Seafaring Scoundrel in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoy historical romance books with an ocean/ship nexus. This book did not disappoint. Devlin was such a great character. He was compassionate, non contentious, and honest to a fault. Do those type of men even exist? Cassandra was equally as fun to read about. Her finance was killed the night before their wedding, and she was left with an illegitimate child. It took her a long time, but she finally accepted her finance's fate and decided to move on with Devlin, just to find out that Devlin's past may destroy their marriage. This was such a great twist to the plot. Overall, this book was well thought out, contained great characters, and was well written. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family, and I look forward to reading more of Sophie Barnes' books.

This was a good story. I wasn't in love with it. It didnt bowl me over. It didnt blow me away. It was a cute, light love story. It had no villain.
There were alot of emotional issues. Parental issues, relationship issues and then morning the death of a loved one.
I felt the dealing of issues sidetracked the love story.
But overall it was a good read. 31/2 stars rounded up to 4.
I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.

A good discussion on grief, and falling in love. The timeline is a little weird in this one, with some time jumps, so the cliche miscommunication seemed to be resolved faster than normal.

Devlin Crawford has sailed back to London after a 10-month voyage. He loves his life visiting foreign countries and bringing back exotic items to sell.

Devlin is brother to Caleb, the Duke of Camberly, with whom he stays when in port. His mother is always after him to get married and settle down, but he is adamant that he loves this life. At her request, he attends a soiree where his old friend, Cassandra, is attending. When an older woman makes disparaging remarks about her, Devlin is incensed and tells the woman that she is going to be his wife. Afterward, he realizes that he will now need to propose to her.

Cassandra had become pregnant by her fiancé who was killed just before their wedding. Her daughter, Penelope, is now 12-years-old and Cassandra has been ostracized by her family and many of her friends. Some members of the Crawford family, along with Cassandra, formed an orphanage on a large estate outside town. Here is where Cassandra flees and Devlin follows her. Now, he must convince her to marry him.

They do marry and Devlin, Cassandra, and Penelope all agree to go on a 10-month voyage aboard Devlin’s ship. There, they face some typical and unfortunate events onboard the ship. In addition, the enforced togetherness of this couple results in some changes. I’ll leave that to your imagination.

I found this to be an interesting story with some great descriptions. I compliment the author on the enormous amount of research she must have done to write this book. I liked Devlin and found him possessing much more patience that I would have. Penelope is also a sweetheart. Cassandra, on the other hand, came across as a shrew during most of the story. I simply did not like her character.

Lady Cassandra Moor and Captain Devlin Crawford have the absolute worst timing in the world. They have managed to be in the wrong place at the exact right time to screw up each other’s lives entirely too often – even before they first met.

A propensity that is almost their undoing, and more than once.

They’ve been friends, or at least friendly acquaintances, for years by the time that this story opens. Dev is the younger brother of the heroes of the previous two books in this series, while Cass is the sister-in-all-but-blood of the women that Dev’s siblings have married. Of course they know each other.

(Although this is the third book in the series you certainly don’t have to have read either of the other two to enjoy this one. I haven’t but I had a lovely time with Dev and Cass – even when they were at odds with each other.)

As the story opens, neither Cass nor Dev have any intention of marrying – not each other, not anyone. Dev is the captain of his own ship and spends 10 months of the year – if not a bit more – sailing between Portsmouth and India. He loves sailing, he loves travel, and the more he travels the more absurd he finds the ton and all of its silly, petty rules.

He neither wants to be tied to England by marrying, nor does he want to leave a wife and most likely children to manage without him for months at a time. He’d be a visitor in his own life and he’s just not interested in doing that to either himself or the hypothetical wife.

Cassandra Moor, on the other hand, had her chance at happily wedded bliss and missed it by a few measly hours. Literally. Her groom was run over by a carriage on his way to the church for their wedding. That tragedy was compounded by their having anticipated their wedding vows, leaving Cassandra bereaved, pregnant and abandoned by her oh-so-proper family.

Her daughter is the light of her life. She has no regrets on that score. And no desire to replace her beloved Timothy in either her heart or her bed.

But the machinations of Dev’s matchmaking mother put Dev and Cass at a society ball that neither of them had any desire to attend. Dev promised his mother he’d dance one – and only one – dance before retreating to the card room. He chooses to dance with Cass, a friend who will not chase after him with a matchmaking mama of her own.

And that’s where it all goes pear-shaped. Only it turns out to be, not a pear, but an absolutely perfect peach of a mistake. That leads to a surprising happy ever after for Devlin, Cass and especially Cass’ 12-year-old daughter Penelope – who has been matchmaking along with the best of them!

Escape Rating B: If you are in the mood for light fluffy romance – with just a touch of angst happily resolved – in the current real life crisis, then Her Seafaring Scoundrel may be just the rogue you’re looking for!

Because this is a delicious little romance with not just a very unconventional heroine – those seem to be in these days – but with an equally unconventional hero. It’s not just that Cass is “ruined” or that she runs an orphanage, but that she’s completely unrepentant about the whole thing. She doesn’t enjoy being the censure of society, and therefore doesn’t expose herself to it often, but she likes her life as it is. And she likes herself as she is, too. The angst of this story doesn’t come from Cass lamenting that she’s not worthy because she has an illegitimate child, but rather that she is still dealing with her very real grief at the loss of the man she loved and expected to marry.

Maybe she clings to that grief a bit too hard, but that’s human.

Dev’s father wasn’t any happier with him than Cass’ parents were with her. Dev went to sea to escape, and to make a life for himself at something he’s good at. In spite of his father’s censure. Like Cass, he clings to that need to escape too tightly, long after it has ceased to serve him.

Or them. Because the story here is of Cass and Dev falling in love with each other after his impulsive and ill-advised announcement of their engagement. An engagement which, at the moment he made his precipitous announcement, did not exist.

But they are friends, and there are worse bases for marriage. A life spent traveling the high seas, seeing places that few English men or women ever get to see, is also one hell of an inducement.

That they fall in love is inevitable. With each other, and with the life they can have together. The reasons that they almost ruin it before it has truly begun lead back to their mutually terrible timing.

But they survive the storm. All the storms. They get past the dark clouds and don’t merely survive, but thrive. Together. With a happy ever after that has all the fluff that a reader could possibly desire.

Neither Cass nor Dev has any intention of marrying anyone much less each other. De Lin has just returned from another successful voyage when he he is coerced into attending a ball by his mother. Cassandra has been an outcast of the Ton for the past 12 years since her fiancé died on the day of their wedding and then she later found she was with child. The two have been friends since they met. When Devlin defends her honor in her absence at the ball they find themselves marrying. Both are tortured by mistakes they have made in the past but it takes a 12 year old girl and a good friend to set them on the path to healing. This is a great love story that shows the depth we will go from the ones we truly love. The series is about three brothers who are triplets and they fall in love with three best friends. Romance is guaranteed and hearts will melt.

Captain Devlin Crawford is briefly at home between his around the world, commercial sea voyages. While attending a ball, he overhears a shrewish baroness disrespecting family friend, Cassandra. When the self righteous woman won’t back down, even when directly confronted by Devlin, he boldly declares that Cassandra is to become his wife. While this statement has the desired effect of silencing the gossiping harpy, it also stuns his family and friends, many of whom were watching the scene unfold. As Devlin starts to calm down, he begins to think that marriage with Cassandra might not be so bad after all. She’s a dear friend, lovely, and there’s always been a subtle undertone of attraction between them. He knows, though, that he has an uphill battle to convince his “fiancée.”

Many years ago, Cassandra Moor was engaged to Timothy, a man she loved deeply. Their love just couldn’t wait for marriage, and they anticipated their vows. Tragically, Timothy was killed in an accident while on his way to the church for the wedding. Cassandra’s pain and grief eased somewhat, as she found out she was to have a child. Her parents, however, were not overjoyed, and disowned her. Cassandra’s brother set her up with a home, where she lived quietly with her daughter, as well as several orphaned children she housed there. Her infrequent visits to town always had her being shunned by her parents, and gossiped about. Cassandra is content to live away from society, mourning her lost love, and caring for the children.

When Cassandra learns of her “engagement,” she is stunned, and can’t imagine what Devlin was thinking, and doesn’t hesitate to let him know her feelings. Devlin presses his suit, emphasizing how beneficial the marriage would be for her illegitimate daughter, Penelope. When Penny enters the discussion, stating how fond she is of Devlin, and how she’d love him as a father, Cassandra is defeated. She does, however, have terms of her own. This will be a marriage in name only with no intimacy. Surprisingly, Devlin agrees, and the couple marries. The new family sets out on a voyage to see the world.

There is so much to love about Devlin. He showers care and attention on his new wife and stepdaughter, teaching them about his life on the sea. Though he will never force the issue, Devlin has confidence that his charm will win over Cass, and that she’ll come to share his bed. He never realized how deeply ingrained her devotion to Timothy still is. Whenever Dev makes progress, any desire Cass feels sends her whirling in a cloud of guilt. At first I admired her steadfastness, but it quickly got old, and I was thoroughly irritated with her. I wanted to urge her not to bury herself with Timothy while she still had many years of life to live.

As I got to know Cass better, I learned that she is a logical woman, as well as one who feels deeply. She needs to work things through at her own pace, and look at the facts behind the emotions. When Cass finally allows herself to feel passion again, I was so thrilled for this couple, thinking the happy ever after was forthcoming. But it was not to be. Hurdle after hurdle appears for this couple every time it seems that there issues and problems are resolved. It almost seems like fate is conspiring against them.

I became totally engrossed in HER SEAFARING SCOUNDREL and its main characters. I love Devlin for being such an upstanding, honest, caring man. His relationship with Penny is truly beautiful, and I admire his strength in standing up against a bigoted society whose rules of conduct ensure that anyone who crosses a toe over the line is a pariah. Cass is definitely stubborn, but she can be reasoned with, and her care of her daughter is stellar. You know that once you win her love, you will have it forever. As for Penny, this young lady is wise beyond her young years. She played a major part in this story, and is truly delightful. HER SEAFARING SCOUNDREL will appeal to readers who love a slow building romance which has to overcome many obstacles along the way.

Since losing the love of her life just before their wedding, Lady Cassandra has had no desire to marry. Her daughter and the orphanage she helps run are enough for her. But when a family friend, Captain Lord Devlin Crawford, causes another scandal involving her and offers to marry her, she knows she must accept for her daughter's sake. Cassandra's agreement comes with the caveat that she and Devlin will never have a true marriage and she makes sure he understands that. Though she's unwittingly attracted to him, Cassandra is determined to be faithful to her first love.

Devlin can't believe the mess he's made of things in the short time he's been on shore. But the more he thinks about it, the more marrying Cassandra actually seems like a good idea. He just has to convince her of that, a task made all the more difficult by the fact that even after 13 years she still mourns her first love. Luckily Devlin has a months-long ocean voyage to attempt to woo his wife.

I enjoyed this book on the whole, but I've got some mixed feelings. I liked Devlin immensely. Far from being a scoundrel, he was a truly good man who always seemed to be doing his best to do the right thing. I'm not sure Cassandra deserved him or the enormous amount of patience and persistence he gave her. There were many times she just needed a good shake and a reality check. I can appreciate her trying to stay loyal to the memory of her first love, but once she said vows to Devlin I expected her to at least start showing some loyalty to them and I found the fact that she really didn't to be rather hypocritical. As hard as Devlin tried to make things work between them, it was like she was working twice as hard to keep them apart. Her reactions to Devlin's attempts to foster closeness were a bit over the top and I think she drew out her grieving to an extent that it lost some of its meaning. Cassandra kept distancing herself from Devlin for too long and it became a bit tedious in a story that's already a slow burn and her unwillingness to help Devlin with his own struggles with guilt made me dislike her and made her come off as self-centered and focused solely on her own issues. Although she does admit to this selfishness a bit, it was a case of too little too late for me. I did love the fact that both Cassandra and Devlin marched to the beat of their own drums despite the censure of their parents and society. Devlin's relationship with and acceptance of Penelope was lovely, in fact I think at times he accepted her more than her own mother did. This was a sensual, not quite steamy read, but it worked here. Overall, I did enjoy this story and found it to be a satisfying end to the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was an enjoyable book to read. It had a good storyline and interesting characters. I thought it was easy to read and enjoyed especially the description of the storm which was quite frightening. There was a happy ending and recommend the book to be read.

This book was such a delightful read with the well written storyline and characters that were so well defined that as I turned each and every page I felt like Devlin and Cassandra pulled me right into their journey!

I love Ms. Barnes’ writing style. It flows well, the characters are engaging, the secondary characters are memorable and the love story is so beautiful. This story has all of that and a slow burn romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The love that Cassandra has for her lost love is not diminished but instead it is brought to the forefront and handled with complete honesty and compassion. Devlin and Cass are perfect for each other. If you like slow burns and light on the sensual side (nothing explicit) then this is a story for you. I will admit I also cried a fair bit while reading this story. And the epilogue is….ahhhh, just so lovely and beautiful.

Her Seafaring Scoundrel
By Sophie Barns was a delectable read. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was so good!! Devlin puts his foot in his mouth and to right it, he convinces lady Cassandra to marry him but only if they don’t consummate the marriage. Cassandra feels disloyal to her deceased one true love and can’t bare to give her love to another man. Devlin is an amazing character I couldn’t help but love him. He is hardworking, loving, strong, and a great captain. With all that how is Cassandra to stay loyal to Timothy? Cassandra is also a great and complex character. I felt sad for her , she had fought for herself and her child for so long with very little help along the way and to get through it all she put Timothy on a pedestal. It was a treasure to watch these two characters grow and change through the book to the end. Thank you for a great book!!

Captain Devlin Crawford comes to Lady Cassandra's rescue by defending her and blurts out she's going to marry him , only she doesn't know it yet. He's already half in love with her. The only thing standing in her way to love him is the torch she carries for the man she's held in her heart for thirteen years. It's a shaky beginning. Maybe a voyage for several months can change her mind to love him.
Devlin can only hope. There is a secret that may destroy his chance. Emotional and I was definitely rooting for Devlin. Love the epilogue. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I loved this story. The writing is excellent as it draws you into the story and keeps your attention. Cass and Devlin are strong characters and together they make a strong couple considering both had vowed to never marry. Devlin, the don of a duke, left home to escape his father’s harsh treatment and Cass, daughter of an Earl, was disowned because she became pregnant and the groom was accidentally killed on their wedding day. Because Drvlin spoke out of turn and because Cass can not endure another scandal, she agrees to marry him but with restrictions, with the main one, they would be married in name only. There is a HEA but a lot happens first, with the main one bring the love they found for each other. This is an excellent story and I would highly recommend it as a great read.

I’ve always enjoyed the books at sea, it always adds an extra layer of intrigue to historical romances, and takes you away from the stuffy ton for a time. When Devlin returns home from his travels at sea for a short time, he’s roped into going to a ball by his mother, who is doing her utmost best to get him married, which is definitely not anything that interests Devlin. But when he’s talking to his brothers – he overhears a stodgy lady of the ton gossiping about Cass, a woman who has been scorned by society by having a child out of wedlock and a longtime friend of Devlin and his family. He confronts the gossiper and puts himself and Cass, into a situation.

I liked the characters, they were well matched, and secondary characters were spot on. There is a slow building romance and some humor to keep the reader smiling. The sex scenes were a bit lackluster, but for readers that prefer a cleaner romance, this one will fit that bill well. I also really enjoyed the epilogue that neatly wraps up this adventure.

Captain Devlin Crawford, was one of three, single, and loving with his nieces and nephews. He had just gotten back from a ten-month voyage at sea. He went to Camberly House where the eldest and a duke resided. He was informed by his mother, that Caleb and Mary were having a ball the following Saturday. He was expected to attend and have one dance. Of course, he could not say no.
Cassandra Moor is the daughter of the Earl of Vernon. She had been in love with Timothy and the day of their wedding he was in an accident and died. She was devastated and later found out she was with child. Her parents tried to get her to marry but she refused and they asked her to leave. She was lucky she had two friends who helped her. They had started an orphanage at Clearview, an estate two days ride from London. There she saw Devlin again. They had been friends throughout most of her life.
I found this story charming and in spots cried. The characters were excellent. They had such hope, caring, and loving. There are a few surprises, also some twists to the tale. It was entertaining and kept your interest. I read straight thru and loved it. It was exciting and thrilling. I most definitely recommend this novel and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.

Will their past and inner woos doom their relationship from the future to come ...

Oh my, Devlin is such a charming devil, happy with his life but when its course is altered, he does. It falters, he chases after the right path.
He is far from perfect, he has his flaws and his scars, some well hidden behind his lopsided smile and his easygoing appearance and juggling with life’s obligations.
And whatever he tells himself, he loves with all his heart and soul. He might have ran away because of his father’s cruelty, he also rebuilt himself in a successful, confident and caring man. One who will protect those needing him, who will accept his fault and right them, who is not afraid to express his feeling.
To summarize, my heart rooted for him!

While I am not sure I liked Cassandra very much at the beginning, to be so devoted to the memory of her lost love appeared at first as lovely, but to cling for so long to the idea of faithfulness, so by the way sentencing herself to a whole life of loneliness, it was excessive.
Because here, we do not talk about a “widowhood” of a few months or a few years, but for thirteen years she had been hanging on the memory of her first love, tragically killed the day before their wedding.
Sure she was very young and she probably idealized him in an awesome hero, still it was like she closed every door hiding a new life opportunity for her.
I admired she raised from her ruination, giving a new meaning to her life, but I disagreed with her life penitence.
Plus I am not fond of people running away at every dent on their road. After it served as proof of Devlin’s dedication and commitment. Yet, her only answer to everything unsettling her is to run, she turns her back instead of facing it.
Why their journey sees her analyzing and pondering her ways, she has a lot of growing up to do and her daughter is the bearer of a lot of wisdom for her age, standing by her side but also demonstrating even if she lets go of the past, it won’t erase her memories.

Mrs Sophie Barnes once more brings together two damaged persons whom with the other will improve their strength and heal from their past wounds for a better future.

I received an ARC of the fantastic story " Her Seafaring Scoundrel" by the fabulous Sophie Barnes from Netgalley and the publisher. This is the third book in the series but can be read as a stand alone as well. Cassandra and Devlin take us on a journey full of twists and turns to come to their HEA. A great read!
