There are fascinating nuggets of business wisdom in here - especially the strategy map (probably worth the price of the book alone) BUT... The book is called Your Next Five Moves and gives the impression that it will teach you how to think five moves ahead. I read it on that basis.

However, instead it tells you 5 essential moves you must make (in different areas of your mindset and business). There is nothing wrong with this but I feel a bit cheated - yes, I will learn how to think better from this book (and already have) but the advantage I wanted was in actual strategizing. This book will improve your strategizing - just not in the way you expect.

YOUR NEXT FIVE MOVES

The funny thing about Patrick Bet-David’s book Your Next Five Moves: Master the Art of Business Strategy is that it isn’t really about what those next five moves should be nor does it have much to say about business strategy.

At least, not exactly. Where those five moves are concerned, Bet-David merely states how one’s approach to business must be like that of a chess grandmaster who can see up to fifteen moves ahead. But because that’s difficult, we should instead shoot for at least five.

There’s no exact framework for what those five should be, so instead he identifies the five “moves” that aspiring entrepreneurs should develop in their playbook: knowing oneself, reasoning under pressure and during emotionally charged situations, building a team, scaling a business, and making the best use of one’s leverage (i.e., “power plays”). These, in turn, are what comprise the book’s promised “art of business strategy,” though they don’t really provide a strategy map as such and may generously be described as necessary conditions for building a successful business (if not “things that happen along the way”).

Indeed, Your Next Five Moves often reads like a supercut of many popular business books, distilled through the lens of Bet-David’s lived experience. The book doesn’t really attempt to convey these concepts in the abstract; instead, Bet-David shares his perspective of why these five moves have been important to him by citing valuable anecdotes throughout his career as an entrepreneur.

In that sense, there are other books that arguably do a better job at conveying what an entrepreneur’s next steps ought to be. And many other books are much more rigorous when it comes to deconstructing business strategy.

Yet few books will probably connect with its desired audience better than Your Next Five Moves.

If there’s anything that may be said about Your Next Five Moves it’s that the book is practical and helpful to a fault. There’s an earnestness to Bet-David’s writing that comes across as empathetic and sincere, which is largely the appeal. Anyone who picks up a book like this is a person looking for business advice, and who better to get it from than a person who’s not only been there and done that but is actually willing to help?

Your Next Five Moves is a down-to-earth book about what it takes to succeed in business. Anyone starting out on the path to entrepreneurship or in need of some perspective to get their professional act together would do well to spend time reading it.

I got to read this book as an ARC and liked it a lot! This book is full of personal experiences and interesting facts on how to grow your idea into a business and thrive. There are five area of focus: Master Knowing Yoursel, Master the Ability to Reason, Master Building the Right Team, Master Strategy to Scale and Master Power Plays. Working on those areas of personal/professional development can help to reach your goals.

Following Pat for a long time on social media and following his professional development and personal development as an entrepreneur and a person running company in a financial world, this book shares years of experience and personal insights on a persona of an entrepreneur, a persona of a person who wants more control in ever-changing world and stability among fast-paced changes in the world.
This book is not necessarily a material/resource for a person who is entering or trying to stabilize the position in the business or financial world, but also for anyone who is entering the world of carrier development, also anyone interested in making his/hers position more stable in case of personal or worldwide cataclysms and changing external stimuli and expectations from a particular field,
Overall an astonishing read and advice to anyone who wants to understand how to get relatively more freedom from external powers.

Depending upon your focus, there is value in this book for more than those who wish to learn more about business strategy. As an “intrepreneur” (author Patrick Bet-David’s word for those who are not running their own business but working and thriving within someone else’s business), I found plenty of information that could be applied to my present situation.

For those who are looking for business strategies to adopt with their own business, this is an excellent book, especially if you have large growth goals. While he is passionate, Mr. Bet-David does not allow emotions to cloud his judgement; rather, he focuses on the facts, and presents those to his employees as self-motivators. This guide is not for the fainthearted. While there are great rewards for following the author’s guide, there is a cost (think family time, hobbies, etc.) and one would need to examine if this path would be worth the sacrifice.

Interesting book, well-written, and plenty of ideas for your own situation even if you don’t own or have aspirations to own your own business. Five stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for a complimentary electronic copy of this title.

Excellent book on strategies to accelerate your career. The personal anecdotes and no-nonsense (almost harsh) style of writing reminded me of bestselling author Ramit Sethi. Like a readable American version of Sun Tsu - the Art of War.
The tips and methods in this book are practical and totally work! I've used a couple in my own career, learning through trial and error. Hopefully, other readers can bypass the trial method and kickstart their career into high gear.
If I had to modify something, I would probably indicate which chapters are not relevant to folks who dont run a business, for example scaling your business. The concepts are applicable to some managers leading large teams or product unit intrapreneurs, but may not feel useful to all readers.
