This book had so much potential in the first chapter, super sweet meet cute, sexy book boyfriend, and small town charm galore. But it quickly went downhill from there with it's outrageous scenes, uninspired banter, and boring internal dialogue in the middle of a conversation. And the ending! This was my first book by this author and it will probably be my last. Three chilli peppers of hotness I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own. |
This one just didn’t do it for me. Seemed nice and quirky in the beginning. Sweet small town romance. I just simply could not get into it for some reason. DNF. |
4 Star review Hooked On You by Cathryn Fox Cathryn Fox is a new author to me. I love small town romance and was intrigued to this story set in Nova Scotia. Kira is in town to settle her late grandmother’s affairs, and not looking for romance. She is unsettled to learn that the B & B is used by fisherman and is based on an honour system. Kira is so far out of her comfort zone that you cannot help but laugh. Add in a blind cow, Nate, a hot lobster fisherman and you know that this will be a quirky story. Although I found Kira a little hard to connect with, I really liked Nate and the secondary characters of Cody, Sam, Jason and Izzy as I found them easy to relate to. This was romantic, a little steamy, at times humorous story that brought a smile to my face. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley |
I like small towns and liked an enjoyed this town and I think that i liked that in the book the best. We meet Kira a mathematician which she will repeatedly, repeatedly mentions this and you get to the point of I got it now can we move along, on a crazy day that she is not watching where she is going a crazy horse comes running down the street And Nate who according to Kira was just the hottest fisherman and she was flabbergasted that he seemed to be flirting with her. I didn't see the chemistry or feel it, because she was nerdy, and a mathematician, and a 27 year old virgin to boot, none of that would have bothered me if I didn't hear it repeatedly and she got over it. They give in and then the secrets come out and Nate is not a fisherman, than what is he. |
An interesting premise, fun characters, charming town, eccentric, it had all the elements for a cute fun read. |
As Entangled usually has great romances, my eye fell on the cover of Hooked On You. What's not to love? And then the blurb made me chuckle. Yep, I'm a bookworm too and although my husband is no hot lobster fisherman, he still is hot :-) The story of Kira and Nate is fun and cozy. The story starts, when Kira is almost run over by a runaway horse (yep his name is Ed) and saved by hot guy Nate. Kira was on her way to the B&B her grandmother left to her mother when she died. Her mother wants Kira to sell the B&B. But on arrival Kira discovers that the B&B is still running (on an honor's system) on its own and that there are several seasonal residents in the B&B, with Nate being one of them. In them, Kira finds the family she has been craving for her entire life. How can she turn down crazy Sam, funny Cody, spunky Izzy and bossman Nate? Nate hasn't told the crew that he is in town to check out the land for his expansion of his fishing company. If he buys the last homes near the shore, he can grow a new factory and increase the employment in the region. However, he doesn't want to get their hopes up, so he has kept quiet about it. Kira is struggling: should she sell the B&B or should she try to raise enough money to buy the B&B from her mother? Because although she loves the town and the fishing crew: they will move away after the season. Or will Nate decide to stay, for her? Miscommunications, funny ninja mice and hilarious roommates help to make the story even more fun and laughter. A cozy read. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc. |
I love reading stories by Cathryn. She develops her characters in a way that adds layers to the story and in the end you know they deserve their happy ever after. In this story the secondary characters were just as important and I loved all the different personalities in this “family”. Another great read you are sure to enjoy! |

Oh how I love this author! Hooked is a funny, well written, hot and sexy, emotional at times, and full of great characters wrapped up in a nice neat little package. I loved the chemistry between all of these characters, it just worked and flowed so nicely page after page. Nate and Kira were just that kind of couple you liked right off the bat. Bridgette and Eddie were hysterical, throw Sam into the mix and you find yourself laughing throughout the book. It tugs at your heartstrings when you don’t have closure with a death like Grams, but because of the way the story was written, tears are mixed with laughter, the best combination when it comes to stories like this. The small town atmosphere worked well, loved the townspeople and how everyone pulls together in this special place. Great story, well worth the read! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book. |
***I read an advanced readers copy via Netgalley, thank you to the publisher for the early access*** Hooked On You is a small town romance, set in Nova Scotia between city girl from across the country Kira and Nate-a low key billionaire CEO who tries to come clean about what he does but never gets the chance to because Kira assumes like the rest of the crew they are around, that he's a fisherman. Kira's grandmother has passed away-leaves her B&B to Kira's Mother who wants nothing to do with it, so Kira's Mom sends her out to Nova Scotia to sell the place. Kira gets there and learns the B&B is still up and running thanks to a group of fishermen who use it and pay for it based off the honor system. I didn't know for a while what this book wanted to me. Is it a romcom? Is it a book about grief? I think its an attempt at being both while including small town charm and a glimpse into Canadian culture which I loved but honestly I wanted to DNF this book on more than one occasion. It was. DRAG to get through, especially the first half of the book. Once I got to about 53% in (yes, very specific) I felt like the plot FINALLY picked up. This book had a lot of potential. I liked the authors choices with the secrets and the conflicts but by the time I got to all that, I was just thrilled that the story was finally coming to a close. I was so painfully tired of the over emphasizing of how 'innocent' the heroine is. Homegirl is 27 years old-not saying that's not realistic BUT I don't need to be beaten over the head with it! "Fast isn't good when you're innocent." "I know I'm not very experienced." "She blushes and curls a long honey-blonde strand of hair around her finger. Her innocent sexuality gives me an instant boner." "I'm inexperienced, but I'm pretty sure few men are tis attentive, this interested in rocking their partner's world." "she said she was inexperienced. I don't know any women her age who haven't had sex" I need someone to explain to me romance author's fascination with writing innocent heroines. A genre written for women by women, WHO are we saying gets a happy ever after? I'm not going to NOT buy your book because your heroine has had a few partners. At this point you'll get kudos for stepping outside of the box because this is becoming a norm. I liked the found family aspect in Hooked On You, it was cool-a little weird sometimes. It wasn't a horrible book so it didn't get less than a 3 stars but it didn't blow me away. |
This was a sweet small town romance that I devoured in one sitting. This is my first time reading this author and I will be reading more of her work. Kira is headed back to her grandmas house to get it ready to sell. She’s kind of awkward and doesn’t seem to have luck with guys. Her first day back in town and she meets Nate in the most unexpected way. Nate is a caring person who doesn’t want to be known for his last name. He couldn’t be more different from his brothers and dad. I loved the chemistry between Kira and Nate. They have such a sweet relationship. If your looking for a sweet, feel good romance look no further. |

I was really loving this book for maybe the first 20% and I had such high hopes for it! We got straight into the story with Kira being run down by a horse, which results in her meeting Nate- and I loved that. We were also introduced to such a charming town which reminded me why I love reading small town romances so much. Everyone knows each other, the B&B operates on an honour system(!!) and cows just mosey into other people's areas! But most of all, the people are so soo sweet! As soon as Cody, Sam, Jason and Izzy were introduced, I was so excited for the family relationship, and although most of the book went downhill for me, I still liked the relationship between the housemates (including Kira). Another thing that the author did well for me was the relationship between Kira and Gram. Even though Gram wasn't physically present in the book, I could still feel the relationship, especially the nostalgia and longing coming from Kira. Unfortunately, Kira's character wasn't that likeable for me. She mentioned multiple times how she thinks she's boring, and I believe it was mostly because she's a mathematician. But just because you're a mathematician it doesn't mean you can't have a personality or talk about anything else? Although, maybe that's what Kira was meant to learn...?? I'm not sure if I took this the wrong way because I'm a maths major (and I know I'm not only my love of maths!), but this definitely made Kira less enjoyable for me. Along with this, the book didn't excite me enough that I wanted to keep turning the pages and that may have been because I wasn't invested in the relationship between Kira and Nate. I just didn't feel the chemistry at all. I also felt the misunderstanding was a bit unreasonable. They never spoke about Gram's studio and Nate's job, but not even because Nate was trying to hide it from Kira, but because they just....didn't talk about it, and I don't believe Nate ever gave any indication that he wanted something from her. BUT I do realise that I'll never know what feelings are involved unless I'm in the situation and it was resolved fairly quickly, so I'll let that go. Overall, this book was a miss for me but if there are books released about the other housemates I might still give them a go! |
Kira returns to the small fishing village in Nova Scotia to settle her beloved grandmother’s estate. On her first day back, she almost gets run over by a runaway horse and is saved by a hot fisherman. When she finally reaches the B&B she learns that the place is still open, fully booked and running on an honor system. Angry lobsters, runaway horses, lovesick cows, ninja mice – this book has it all! I really enjoyed this story and it made me laugh loudly more than once. I was hooked from the first page and just adored the characters. Kira is smart, witty and unknowingly funny. I loved every part of this story and only wish it did not end as abruptly as it did. It was a wonderful, funny, steamy and heartfelt story with great characters. |
Kira is back in the small fishing town in Nova Scotia to settle her grandmothers estate. On her very first day, she is saved by a rather handsome fisherman, Nate from being run over by a horse. After her adventure, when Kira reaches the B&B she finds it is still running, on honor system and that Nate is also one of the guests. Nate is not really a fisherman, he is the CEO of a fishing company, and is very interested in Kira. Hooked on you is a delightful read, a perfect small town romance. I really enjoyed the sexy banter and chemistry between Kira and Nate. It is a sweet read with some amazing characters, main and secondary. I hope there are more books to come in the series. |

Blind lovesick cows, angry horses, hot men, tiny fishing village in Nova Scotia this one sent me right into orbit! I loved every single minute of this book and did not want to put it down. Quiet math mathematician Kira drives across Canada to Nova Scotia to settle her beloved grandmothers estate at the bidding of her too busy mother. Her orders were to sell the B&B left to her mother, Kira's grandmother left her her small cottage/studio. One that brings her many happy memories. Arriving in town she crosses the street when she's almost run down by a runaway horse when she's saved by Nate. Nate she assumes is a lobster fisherman since he's in full fishing garb. Nate is an eyeful to say the least and there is an immediate spark between the two. Being back in the little town brings back so many good memories for Kira, good times with her grandmother who was much loved in the town. She arrives at the B&B surprised that Nate too is staying there, along with the rest of the fishing crew. Kira is surprised at what's transpired there. Payment is made by the honor system, they take turns cooking and taking care of the house. The cast of characters was insanely good and I loved them all. They took Kira in like she were one of their own. There are quite a few madcap adventures from Kira almost setting the kitchen on fire, to Bridgette the blind, love sick cow who had a thing for Nate and would wander over from the neighbors at the sound of his voice. Money raising adventures by the crew to save the B&B from sale, and Nate's real job and backstory. Nate's the CEO of the company that owns the fishing enterprise. He's there to put his idea into place to build a different type of processing plant, bringing more jobs and streamlining the business. All to his nasty father's chagrin. He's managed to buy up all the properties he needs to expand the business except one. What he doesn't know is that's the property that Kira's little cottage studio sits on. Things heat up between Nate and Kira and I do mean heat up, it's Cathryn Fox after all! The two had great chemistry together and while Nate knew what Kira did, getting her PhD in Math and planning on returning to the west coast to finish her doctorate, she thinks he's a fisherman for most of the book. But now she's thinking of staying, being able to transfer to a program nearby. This town where she feels included and has friends, unlike at home. Nate is determined to do several things, one is keeping Kira, proving his father wrong and for the first time he's thinking about staying in town. At that I'll leave you hanging. This is a must read story, just the right amount of angsty goodness, plenty of steam, seamless writing and a cast of characters I would love to see again. Total 5 star plus read for me. Cathryn Fox never disappoints. arc from Entangled via NetGalley for an honest review |

ira is back in the small fishing town in Nova Scotia where she once lived with her beloved Gram. Now that her Gram has passed away, Kira’s mother who hates the place only wants to get rid of her Gram’s house and has instructed Kira to list it and get it sold. Her 1st day back, Kira is saved from a rather obnoxious runaway horse by whom she assumes to be a fisherman, from his attire and that he was carrying a load full of lobsters. What she doesn’t realize is that all this time, since she moved away, even after her death, her Gram’s house which she had operated as a B&B, continued on as such, incredibly on an honour system. Thinking herself alone, she finds herself not only in the same residence as said earlier hot fisherman but a few other of the lobster fishermen – well fisherperson really since 1 of them is a woman. Kira is a bit of a nerd. A brilliant mathematician but one who has a pretty low opinion of her own attractions from her experiences with men so far who have only used her for her brains & then hightailed away once they got what they needed. She accepts Nate at face value, never looking down at him when he didn’t correct her impression of what he did. Given that he would go out on the boats with the other fisherman, a quite believable assumption on her end. Nate is wonderfully protective of Kira and her perfect complement. Her intelligence doesn’t scare him – well he is the CEO of his own company – in fact he admires her all the more for it. There’s loads of humour in the story. The tenants in the B&B (other than Nate – no big brother he!) accept Kira into their big ‘family’ and treat her as a sister. Their side characters add a wonderful warmth and camaraderie to the story. A lovely feel good story. |
Hooked is a story that takes place in a small Canadian town in Nova Scotia where there is an honor system, payment by lobster, old style pumps, and runaway horses. Kira hasn’t been back for years but now she’s here to take care of her grandmothers estate and well she’s in for a surprise. Rescuing a damsel a couple of times is nothing for Nate. He’s the CEO of Hooked a fishing company and he’s trying to get more jobs, better pay, and well if there are a few perks to rescuing a pretty lady why not? A b&b filled with fishermen, pickle jars, Ninja mice, crazy stories, bachelor auctions, secrets, hidden pasts, and well a lot of cute sweet and sexy moments this book is for you!!! |
such a funny book. it has it all. lobsters, cows and hot fisherman. what's not to like. great humor and great characters. |
4.5☆ Loved it! What I liked: The writing style The characters Dual POVs Standalone HEA Epilogue I look forward to reading more from this author. |
This cute, coastal, small town contemporary about two unlikely people falling in love was given to me in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley and Entangled Publishing. I was so excited when I was approved for this book. It’s about a girl going to her grandmother’s old B&B to get it ready for sale after her passing. While there the girl falls in love with a man just in town for the season and wonders if she shouldn’t stay. It has all the wintery coastal vibes that I love, it has a found family (a freaking found family in a romance), and a blind cow who is so adorable. How could I not want to read it?! I think the romance is cute and I was definitely rooting for the couple, but I think the heart of what made me enjoy this book so much is the side characters. I love the found family element to this story. It wasn’t something I was expecting going into the novel. I think you get so much of their personality and backstory that they feel like family to you too. I think there’s room to build on this and do a few companion novels with Jason, Cody, Izzy, and Sam. I also really enjoyed the town. I’ve always been a fan of the East Coast in the winter. I don’t know why really, but I love the Fall to Winter time frame in this book. It really adds so much to the feel of the place. It feels like this could easily be picked up for a Lifetime or Hallmark movie for a movie set near Christmas (just add a dash of tinsel and a tree or two). I do think there were moments that felt too easy or too unbelievable, but if I can watch Hallmark movies and love them, I can suspend my disbelief for this book. I think the end does feel a little too quick. We spent so much time falling in love with all the characters and the town and not enough time going over the conflict and picking up the pieces. I think another solid 15 pages is really all that would have been necessary to make it work. I also had a little trouble with the sex scenes. There are a few of those and I think they’re done pretty well, but I’m not a big fan of dirty talk and there’s some of that during the sex scenes. Just a personal preference. It’s a quick and cute read that I had so much fun with. Definitely worth picking up when it comes out on April 27th. |
I LOVED this book...until the ending, whhhyyyyy. You guys know I love cute, small town romances with hunky lobstermen LOL, especially if they're gentlemen who seek to protect you & make you dinner & accidentally become the love interest of blind cows! And let's not forget about the people who lived with Nate at the B&B, they were an absolute crack! The thing is, I don't like hasty and unbelievable endings. Yeah, okay, a blind cow having a crush on a human is kinda out there, but it's cute at the same time...RIGHT?! Without spoiling what I think is a meh ending, I'll just say that I would've preferred they had fought it out, or just SOMETHING that evoked more emotion, ya know. P.S. I hope this book is part of a series because I really looooved Sam and hope he gets his HEA! -JH |
