I really struggled with this book, and have picked it up and put it down a few times. It wasn’t really a romance, more Historical Fiction with some romantic elements. It didn’t hold my interest that much, and I found the male character immature and difficult to warm to.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

I was a bit unsure about this story from the beginning. This ( white man and black woman) just didnt seem realistic during this era. I felt this book was more historical than romance but overall I like the strong will thomas with Caroline. Not sure if I would reread this book again.

I wish people woule be careful when writing Black women during any period but especially during times where they were forcefully raped.

Review Our hearts are blind by Heidi Sprouse

This is a book about a mixed race relationship during the American civil war.

Not normally my choice of read as you never can be sure of the authors take on such brutal times.

The story was different than most . It did have great potential but as a romance was slow to get there could have been such a rich descriptive book but the author missed out .

I feel this wasn’t quite what I expected as romance .

This book was different. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either in the mist of what is going on in the world the backdrop of the story is good. The Civil War is always an interesting backdrop because of the North fighting the South over slave freedom, but I don't believe romanticizing what happened though. The truth is never pretty but for the story it was a good distraction.

I really enjoyed reading this, I liked that this was well-written and doesn't totally focus on the romance aspect.

I received free copy of Our Hearts are Blind in exchange for an honest review. If you are looking for a romance novel this is not the book for you. I was halfway through the book, and the primary characters Thomas and Caroline only came into contact three times. These contacts did not include any dialect which only occurred by sheer accident such as touching to grab a serving platter while the entire extended family was seated for a meal. The only saving grace to the novel is the history and the story of the abolitionists. I've always been fascinated with the Civil War Era, and the backstory provided enough entertainment to save this book from being a total romance failure. This would definitely be a better read if it was categorized as a different genre.

This was a very good romance book that involves a very difficult subject to write any type of romance about.

I wanted to like this book. The cover is gorgeous, but the storyline is weak. There was a lot more the author could have done with this story and I'm not sure why she didn't. There could have been depth, the kind of depth that pulls on your emotions, endears you to the characters and helps you to relate to them.

A nice story about an interracial relationship.
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Gallery Books, and was not required to give a positive review.

Heidi Sprouse depicts the Civil War era and the conflicts of those who lived during this turbulent period in American history with vivid detail. Sprouse's characters show the bravery of southern abolitionists and the many dangers they faced in standing up against the institution of slavery. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy the accurate portrayal of the era and the tender romance between Thomas and Caroline. ..
