DID NOT FINISH Thank you NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the free copy. This is an honest review. Listen, the premise for this book was freaking awesome. And this was one of those cases where the blurb was actually 100% better than the book. And I am down for four female authors to pack up their shit and leave after they figure out what they're getting is less than they deserve. But honestly, I did not get far enough into this book to even believe this sort of thing might happen sooner or later. The lockdown for COVID-19 can make people do strange things as we can see online, but I did not think me requesting this book would be one of them. Turns out, this book is hot garbage! The writing is all over the goddamn place. It's mostly uninterrupted dialogue with no clue as to who is speaking. It might be the version I got for my Kindle, and I hope to god it is better in published form but I feel like that is not the case. Does no one know spellcheck anymore? Like, what is going on? All I want to do is forget about this book and I wish I hadn't wasted two days trying to get through how much ever I did manage to read. Sorry, folks. And special apologies to the author. Truly. But I would rate this less than one star if I could. |
This was an interesting look at the world of publishing, through the lens of satire. The characters are fairly likable, but the writing was not my style. I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own. |
Being a writer for these four authors is so much more than putting pen to paper, it is their life, emotions, and heart into each word. For their publisher unfortunately, it's a quick buck. The story had immense potential based on the plotline but the variety of characters and perspectives made me yearn for a dominant voice to guide us along the journey. I really couldn't identify with any of the characters but it did give some interesting insight into the struggles of a writer. |

I had high hopes for this book from the start. I think the idea of writers coming together to get even so to speak with their publisher. This book however fell flat for me, the story line seemed a bit all over the place and the characters to me seemed scattered. Some chapters had multiple characters perspectives seeming to happen out of no where. Again I think the idea of this book was great it just was not for me. I would have to give this book a 1 out of 5. Thank you netgalley and publisher for the advanced read. |
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. This is not my usual genre, I’m more of a crime/thriller reader however this story intrigued me. I absolutely loved it, truly one of the best books I have read. I am extremely pleased and grateful to both for opening up my mind to something totally different. |
Cute but not rave-worthy. I was hoping for some real tension and banter and I just didn't find that za-za-zoom. Still a good book! |
1 star I have to admit that the concept of this book was great. Four writers are being taken advantage of by a ruthless publisher. That is why I have it the one star. I couldn't go any higher due to the fact that the story was so disjointed. Nothing seemed to make sense. They would start off a scene with Gloria and suddenly it has veered off into an entirely different direction. I feel like this is missing a plot and a main point of view character. It needs something to ground it. This is almost reading like a first draft before editing. My suggestion is to pick one writer and tell her story. Show us how she overcomes this ruthless publisher and comes out a winner. The way it stands now, it's hard to read and figure out what is going on. My eyes were crossing in confusion and it gave me a headache trying to piece it together in my mind. |

Writers revenge starts with great promise. A writer finds she has basically signed her life away in her haste to get published. Now that she has a bit of success her publisher refuses to relinquish her US rights, practically keeping her prisoner. As she initially believes he has her best interest at heart,a chance meeting open her eyes to the very real possibility for stability, notoriety and a movie of her property. Joined by other authors who have fallen victim to this publishers unsavory practices Esther hatches a plan to bring him down and save their writing futures. Brilliant. Happy reading |
What drew me to select this book was the idea of a story about authors. A book about books if you will. I liked the drama and story line however I felt like it didn’t flow. I was often confused how the plot went from one detail to the next or what character was speaking (maybe that was a format issue?) I wished for more character development in the beginning. Maybe having a chapter for each character and their view points & narration. |
When life for the entire universe and planet turns on its end and like everyone else you "have nothing to do" while your place of work is closed and you are in #COVID19 #socialisolation, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today. (I have played a zillion games of scrabble, done a zillion crosswords and I AM BORED!!!) I requested and received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review. From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸. What if the one thing you wanted turned out to be the worst thing ever? You find a publisher but he stands in the way of a lucrative deal in the US, how would you behave? Esther was livid… How would you react if your first novel received no marketing support – and your second sold out within days because they printed too few? Donna didn’t like it one bit. What if you’d naively signed a contract for your future books, on the same miserable terms as your debut? Gloria wanted to pack it in before things got worse. And – would you feel as hurt and upset as Petra if your editor blurted your closely guarded secrets to the world and their auntie? Humorous story of a callous publisher, a scheming editor and a ‘job’s worth’ marketing manager versus four authors determined to bring them to book. Will they succeed? I am torn about this book: I was unsure if it was supposed to be a satire or if the author was writing about her attempts to publish a book. The characters were just so-so: I could not really identify with any of them. As a librarian, if I do not learn something new or get engaged in the characters I did not truly read/finish the book (I skimmed through it) as there are too many good ones out there to read and review. That also applies to just being a lover of books --- if it isn't interesting, on to the next one! |
Cute, funny and smart are words to describe this book. It took me no time to read it because I couldn’t put it down. A true break from life for a bit and just enjoyable fun. |
Thank you for the free book netgalley. I was not a fan of this book. I didn’t connect to any of the characters. They just seemed dumb. Like I would never be friends with anyone of them.I really didn’t like the parts of the book when there were experts of the books authors books.(if that makes sense) I just didn’t really like the book. I read about 20% of it before I started skimming it just so I can say I finished it. |
A fun and engaging novel that charts life in the publishing world, with a very varied cast of characters who are all easy to connect with, some you like and some you don't. If you've ever wondered what it's like to be an author or to be responsible for publishing a book, then this is a great read. It's one to pass the time curled up on the sofa or having a soak in the bath. |
