Do Lizard’s Eat Ice Cream? Well now I had never thought about it but surely they don’t. Etta Kaner’s charming new non-fiction book has all the answers to how animals keep cool in the heat. Illustrated by Jenna Piechota, this fantastic non-fiction book is written in one of my favourite formats: question and answer. Question and answer books make fantastic read alouds and books to share together because they allow for participation. If you have an early reader they can try and guess if the question is true or false and perhaps why it is so. Non-fiction books written in a question and answer format are significantly more engaging than books just spouting facts at the reader.

Etta Kaner has come up with a fabulous way to share information that is perfectly geared towards the youngest readers. From preschoolers to grade schoolers, children will enjoy interacting with the engaging format and the lively pictures.

Some children really enjoy having photos as the pictures in non fiction texts while others enjoy illustrations. My non-fiction reader personally enjoys both depending on what information he is gathering. I enjoy Jenna Piechota’s illustrations in Do Lizards Eat Ice Cream? They add charm and humour to further engage readers in the text

I wasn’t surprised when I read that the author is a teacher. Ms. Kramer does an excellent job of capturing children’s attention, spur their curiosity, and provide them with information. The comparison of humans to animals helps young readers understand. The illustrations are adorable! This is a great addition to elementary school classroom libraries.

This book is wonderful. The pictures were adorable and my niece and nephew thought they were really funny. And the book shares information about how animals stay cool in the summer in a way that was fun and interesting!

This delightful non-fiction book will have kids giggling as they discover how animals keep their cool in the heat. The author proposes some silly scenarios and questions then factually gives the answers to them.

"Do frogs use sunscreen to protect their skin?
Do koalas run through sprinklers?
Do desert ants sit in front of air conditioners?
Do elephants use fans?" are some of the questions asked.

The responses are quite astonishing and a great way of learning exactly what these animals do to stay cool. The playful and cartoonish illustrations will bring laughter, spark discussions and peek curiosity regarding each animal highlighted. I learned a lot! Who knew that:

"Waxy monkey tree frogs make their own sunscreen. It comes from glands in their skin. They use their legs to rub a waxy cream all over their body, The "frog sunblock" stops the frog's skin from drying out. This is one frog that doesn't mind the sun!"

"African lungfish live in water that often dries up and turns to mud. When this happens, it's time for a nap. The lungfish digs a burrow under the mud and covers itself with a blanket of bubbles. When does it wake up? When it rains. But that would take as long a two years to happen!"

This book would be a great addition to a classroom or school library. It is the sequel to "Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?" another book that kid's will love. I highly recommend it.

I can't imagine that I ever wondered how animals beat the heat, but for those who have, this is an excellent picture book explaining it in terms that kids can understand. No Lizards don't eat ice cream to cool down. They actually dance, to move cooler hair under their bellies, and cool their feet.

And kangaroos lick their arms to keep cool, because they can't sweat.

And musk oxen shed their coats when it gets too hot.

Cut way to teach kids about animals in ways that relate to what they know.

This review is based on an ARC of Do Lizards Eat Ice Cream which I received courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher.
What a fun book to engage young readers in learning about animals! This colorful, picture book asks kids to think about how animals keep cool. Each page asks a question and is accompanied by illustrations that coordinate with the question, many are quite funny. The next page then goes onto explain simply how the animal keeps cool. For example, do lizards eat ice cream to beat the heat? No! Shovel-snouted lizards dance to cool down. The answers are written in an easy to read, informative paragraph.
I could see this book being used in a classroom to have students make predictions. It's a great non-fiction picture book that will engage and educate it's young readers.

This is a super cute book that we enjoyed reading together as a family. I have an animal loving 8 year old boy and he loved all the facts in this book. He enjoyed learning how animals stay cool. I liked how there were suggestions how they could do it --- then it's broken down to how they stay cool. Great family book.

I received a copy of this book through netgalley - all thoughts are my own.

Etta Kaner has a stellar record of creating picture-book nonfiction that appeals with its combination of colorful graphics, cool facts, and kid-friendly humor. I must have read hundreds of animal nonfiction books in my many, many years as a school librarian, yet I knew almost none of the facts laid out in this book!

The adorable illustrations in this nonfiction picture book make learning odd animal habits fun and potentially interactive for classroom learning! This is a great book to open conversations at home about how the animal kingdom adapts according to its surrounding climates.

I loved this.

The information was my favorite, but I also enjoyed the funky fun images, and this take of how to look at a theme through nature.

How we all stay cool is a super fun way to see clever / amazing solutions to heat (we’ll need ALL of these ideas very soon thanks to our ignorance of climate change)..

This book is informative, accessible to a range of ages, and fun. It’s also easily a starter book for a science unit or class conversation.

I would definitely have this in my classroom, pass this to friends, and I want a copy for myself!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I love "Do Lizards Eat Ice Cream?"! I immediately thought of my animal-loving, fact-finding class that would fall in love with this book. The illustrations, simple questions and fairly quick answers will make this book a hit with my kids. Kaner presents non-fiction in a very fun-loving, enjoyable way that will be easily digestible for young children.

I LOVE this book. Illustrations: adorable. Content: cute, yet educational. Did I learn things I didn't know about animals? Absolutely! A definite must-read for any animal lover.

It's built to be read aloud with plenty of chances for the audience to guess if what the animals in the illustrations are doing is what they actually do in real life.

I can't wait to add this to my classroom library!

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC! All opinions are my own and are unbiased.

Nonfiction picture book. This is the companion to [book:Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?: How Animals Keep Warm|37690784]. As in the first book, several animals are shown cooling off in different ways. A human way of cooling off is presented as a question, followed by an explanation of how an animal does or does not follow a similar procedure. Animals featured include lizards, koalas, sea stars, desert ants, elephants, lungfish, alligators, kangaroos, frogs, plovers, oxen, squirrels, and gulls. The pictures are bright and welcoming while also being informative. A great book for the early elementary crowd.

This is a cute, easy to read nonfiction title. It is great to start to explain the concepts of how animals deal with hot climates and how that might relate to how we deal with hot weather. The question and answer format are great for younger readers who are curious but might not be able. to understand big concepts. I do wish there was a bibliography at the end or any sort of endpapers so kids and adults can see where the information came from or how to get more information about a particular animal.

This is such a fun book. The illustrations are simple, colorful and expressive. Children will really enjoy this because they are first presented with a somewhat silly question such as "Do frogs wear sunscreen?" They can think about this silly question - it seems like the answer would be no doesn't it? But then the next page explains how it is that frogs do indeed wear sunscreen. This is such an informative book which explains how many different types of animals cool off when they are hot.

It's really a lot of fun and very educational. I'd like to have it in my classroom!

Thanks to #netgalley and #dolizardseaticecream for the advance reading copy.
