UPDATE: I was approved!
When life for the entire universe and planet turns on its end and like everyone else you "have nothing to do" while your place of work is closed and you are in #COVID19 #socialisolation, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today. (I have played a zillion games of scrabble, done a zillion crosswords and I AM BORED!!!)
I requested and hope to receive a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review. I have actually already read the book last year as I gave it to my husband as a birthday gift....so I can review it in advance of hopefully being approved and posting my review on #NetGalley!
From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸.
In Canadian Spirits, bestselling author Stephen Beaumont (The World Atlas of Beer) and National Magazine Award-winning author Christine Sismondo (America Walks into a Bar) crisscross the country in search of the best whiskies, gins, vodkas, rums, and other assorted and sometimes oddball spirits produced by Canada's large- and small-scale distillers. Along the way, they trace Canada's fascinating distilling history, from its humble and quasi-legal beginnings to the dynamic and internationally recognized industry it is today.
Featuring over 75 colour photos, Canadian Spirits tells the vibrant stories of Canada's more than 160 diverse spirits producers, from the massive Hiram-Walker distillery in Windsor, Ontario, to the pioneering Glenora Inn & Distillery in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and Vancouver's tiny Odd Society Spirits. In an impartial and accessible tone, the authors provide information on and reviews of craft-distilled spirits and the facilities in which they are produced, creating a distillery tourist's roadmap to the best places in Canada to explore craft spirits.
Whether a seasoned spirits expert, a curious newcomer or an adventurous traveller, Canadian Spirits is sure to quench your thirst.
This is a great book for every Canadian in your life who likes to read about and perhaps visit distilleries. (I know that the author has written "The World Atlas of Beer" - I think that he needs to write a book on Canadian micro-breweries as we seek them out every time we travel!)
This is an interesting read but as one usually cannot get spirits from another province due to draconian laws set by the provincial governments who run and own stores where you can buy spirits. (Wine and beer can be sold at both breweries and the government stores as it has a lower alcohol content. The sales from these stores do lead to paying for things like universal health care but it is INSANE that I cannot import spirits from another province on my own!!!)
Diatribe over.
I enjoyed reading about these distilleries and I hope that they can survive the #coronavirus #COVD19 #socialisolaiton that is going on while I am writing this review. We need to support them or we will be stuck with the government-sold swill. If you like near one of these distilleries, read this book and find out what to buy --- then go buy it!! This is the perfect guide to drink your way across the country with. Oh, that sounded bad: to buy drinks across the country and then not drive afterwards. Take it home and drink it: this is the perfect guide to the spirits you need in your life.
As always, I try to find a reason to not rate with stars as I love emojis (outside of their incessant use by "🙏-ed Social Influencer Millennials/#BachelorNation survivors/Tik-Tok and YouTube Millionaires/etc. " on Instagram and Twitter... Get a real job, people!) so let's give it 🍸🥃🥤🍷🍺
