This is a really interesting autobiography that explores life after death through one man's experiences. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, you'll find plenty of thought provoking material in here to make you question what really happens when we die.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC without obligation.

This is a much-appreciated book on NDEs, providing a modern take on the phenomenon. I consider this text to be today's "Life after Life."

Unusual and interesting book about David Ditchfield's near death experience. Found it very credible and very readable.

This had so much substance; although I went in to learn about the near death experience, I was left really caring about our author and his life and how this terrifying event shifted his attitude to life. David was an amazing storyteller. He made his life worth learning about and I was interested throughout the whole account.

I got emotional for him when he was pleading to be taken away from the harm that was his near death experience and although I knew overall he'd be okay, I was really panicking for him!

The art he produced was beautiful! As was the music he wrote. Absolutely breath taking and made me feel so at peace. What an amazing achievement, especially having never done anything like that before. I truly believe in what he experienced.

I liked the little interview part at the end.

Shine On by David Ditchfield is about his Near Death Experience (NDE) and how being pulled under a train profoundly changed his life.
Ditchfield does a fantastic job illustrating the hopeless despair he felt prior to the accident - his life financed by his dwindling overdraft, having one job after another fall apart, a romantic relationship that is his worst fear realized.... it is painful and awkward because as the reader you feel his pain too.

The moments before he gets pulled under the train move as though in slow motion - the detail of his sweater, the thickness of his jacket.... it gave me 'Sherlock' vibes - how he would think so quickly and process to much information and act accordingly in just fractions of a second.

And then... 'After' his NDE... to avoid spoilers, all I will say is that inspiration and drive like that - to create art and music with no training or classes or even instructional youtube videos.... to be able to take something you see in your mind's eye (or hear) and to translate that to something tangible... that takes something beyond what we have here.

Overall, a good read.

This is a true story about a young man who got pulled under a train and lived to tell the tale. After a teaser at the beginning to leave us where the accident is about to happen, we read about everything going wrong in his life in the lead up to that point and his alcohol dependency which underlies some of his problems.

The accident is described blow by blow, telling us the full traumatic episode as well as a mystical near death experience that happens. This is followed by both physical and psychological treatment, as well as his journey to share the mystical experience with others. He also learns that he's not alone in these experiences.

Having read a fair bit about near death experiences, or NDEs over time, I found it fascinating. David's experiences fit in with many other accounts I've read and to my joy, the book has an introduction by Raymond Moody, one of the primary authors I've read on this subject.

What is different about this case is that David was driven to paint what he saw during his mystical experience, despite not having been an artist before. This was followed by a similar impulse to write music of the classical type when his only previous experience of music was playing a guitar for a punk band. He couldn't read music, but with help he was able to transcribe an entire score for an orchestra and hear the music in his head played live, including procuring a usually hard to get tenor for a vocal passage.

It's an amazing story of an extraordinary near death experience that sent me to the Internet to see the paintings and hear the music. The music is especially moving and can be heard on his own website. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in NDEs.

An amazing story of how falling under a train and surviving changed David’ Dutchfield’s life. While David was in the hospital after the accident he experienced an after life encounter, where unconditional love appeared. An unexplainable phenomenon. David continued to remember every detail of his experience. Although one of his arms was shattered and he needed numerous operations, he was determined to draw what he had experienced whilst unconscious and near death. And later to paint it. An excellent autobiography, one you won’t want to miss.

I have never read or heard of anything like this before reading this book. I have a passing interest in near death experiences (NDE), but have never really focused on them. This book may have changed all that. This is the story of David Ditchfield and his NDE and how it changed/affected him. The book provides a lot of information about his life prior to the experience, so the reader can better understand where David is coming from. It allows on to see how thing were and how they changed after the NDE. I am still not sure about how or if I believe this, but it was a fascinating story to read—and I tend to think it is true (though, as I said, I am not fully convinced). There is some of the spirituality transformation he experienced mixed in with the physical, real-life stuff, which made it more interesting and believable. One thing I noted is that there was not much about his experience in higher realms, which most of the NDE books or articles I have read tend to focus on. Instead, the book focuses on his life and how it changed after his NDE. One reviewer compared it to diary, which is a good description. As I said, the jury in me is still out about what to believe/accept, but this book had brought me further along. It is different, and can probably interest anyone looking for something a bit different. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

This is quite a remarkable story that I enjoyed reading. The author recounts vividly for the reader his life before then his transformation after his NDE and how it changes his life. His new found abilities after his NDE are truly a miracle.

Thank you for the ARC. I recommend this book .

I'd like to believe that there is an afterlife. This is the true account of the author's life after a near death experience. The accident should have killed him. We learn snippets of his life before the accident then how it changed his life forever.

David Ditchfield tells us his experiences, warts and all. I've never heard before of people bringing back a talent after a near death experience. There's more about his life before the accident than after it it does help to let us know exactly what his life was like beforehand. I'm still not sure what I believe after reading this book but I did enjoy reading all about it.

I would like to thank NetGalley, John Hunt Publishing and the authors David Ditchfield and JS Jones for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is advertised as a near death experience. David Ditchfield was dragged under a train in England. The train was stopped and he was dropped onto the tracks. He suffered many injuries and was taken to hospital where he had a NDE.

This book tells about events leading up to the accident, the accident itself, and the strange changes that happened to him afterwards. I felt far too much time was spent on his life before the accident.
I have read of many people gaining unknown talents after such an experience and Mr. Ditchfield's gains unbefore unknown talents in music and art.

I am a skeptic and really don't know what to think of all of this except that I doubt that he remembers verbatim many of the conversations related in the book. If this had been advertised as a novel, I'd have given it a much higher rating. But the dialogue is just a bit too much for me to accept.

A really thought provoking read. From the vivid description of the accident all the way through to re-building his life, the author writes an indepth view of how his near death experience affected him. Incredibly intriguing. Definitely worth a read.

I like to believe that there is an afterlife so found it very interesting how Davids life was transformed after his experience.

This is a fascinating read regardless of your religious beliefs. This mans life changed so much after his accident that should have killed him and he not only became sober at last but also composed a piece of classical music a with no musical experience previously. His accident totally transformed his life.

This is a beautiful book. It gives hope and I found that the most important thing in life is love. After reading this, no one can say heaven doesn’t exist. The book is not judgmental in any way and I would recommend it to everyone especially in these hard times.

Excellent book about life after death. It is very reassuring that life continues after leaving the earthly realm.
