I don`t really know what i expected but i know it wasn`t this. I expected romance, and how it was pitched it sounded like we would get adorable M/M Romance. The story itself was somewhat cute, but it was too quick done. I did not get enough time to get to know the characters, and was interupted by pixies, dragons and whatnot.

I had read a couple of pages of Mell Eight's "Dragon Consultant" a few months ago when I was getting my hair dyed and got distracted and didn't finish it. Last week when I couldn't sleep I was looking for a book to read that wasn't too long or wouldn't be too upsetting and I decided to try to read "Dragon Consultant."

Before detailing the book itself I want to note that Dragon Consultant and the later books in the series are all (what I would consider) novellas as they are each about 100 pages. The length means that the stories have a fairly short arc (although there is an arc that continues through all the books) which makes the stakes not as high. However, I do not consider this to be a bad thing-- in fact I found reading this incredibly soothing. There is really adorable tension between Dane (the main character) and his love interest Mercury (all the books have M/M romance) as Dane realises he somehow has gone from a family of one to a family of eight or so.

Usually when I see the term heart-warming I immediately take a book out of my TBR (as it usually involves a dog dying or something) but this book was a genuinely comfy read. I can absolutely see myself rereading this book as a quick pick-me-up.

This book is not for those that want only fantasy with complicated magical worlds and high stakes (which is also important). There are discussions of segregation and characters being ostracized but it is fairly cursory.

I do highly recommend Dragon Consultant and the rest of the series as fun books to read when you need a quick pick-me-up and don't want to be reading books with incredibly stressful moments.

Dragon Consultant by Mell Eight is a fantasy novel, where Dane is a supernatural consultant, who is called in by the FAA for dragons in the airspace! He turns up and finds dragon kits (young dragons) around a sick adult dragon, called Mercury.

Dane takes Mercury and the kits home after he hears the story of why they're together, and promises to look into it.

This is a quick read, but enjoyable, with fun characters, government coverups, and a love story.

Dragon Consultant was published on 20th April 2020 and is available from Amazon and Bookshop.org (books 1-3 of the series).

You can follow Mell Eight on Facebook , Twitter and her website .

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to NineStar Press .

Dragon Consultant was a pleasant but quick read. The characters have the beginnings of depth that you would want in a longer series but I wish that the book were longer to allow more character development. The younger characters personalities came across well and seemed playful but serious. I feel like the romance aspect of the book needed more to it - this seems to be an instant relationship. There was nothing really building up to it. I also think that the mystery and plot development needs a little more detail. Everything is there for this to be a great series of quick reads I just wish there was more detail in plot and character development. This isn't lacking anything that prevents it from being an enjoyable quick read but it could use more fleshing out.

Very sweet and fluffy, the kind of book you can escape into on a stressful day. I just wish it had been longer and more detailed; it's a good book, but it had the potential to be excellent and is cut off before it can get there.

I received this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed Dragon Consultant a lot, and especially liked the dragons! They’re so fun. I would love some back story on Dane, and for some of the time jump gaps to be filled in though.

As much as it is definitely insta love, I really liked the relationship between Dane and the dad dragon, and his way with the younger ones.

I was hoping to see more of them figuring out the mystery of who was kidnapping and torturing dragons, and why, rather than just going after one sect in this installation. I was also put off my the sampler of the next book included at the end, as there’s a five year time jump in which it seems not much has happened!

Overall I think the book should have been longer but it is fun and cute, and I enjoyed it.

Since there seems to be some confusion... yes, I did tag this book as a M/M Romance. No, it has no explicit content at all, but that doesn't mean that it's not a romance. There's no better way to categorize it than that though. I considered Dragon Consultant a sweet romance because two people found each other and fell in love. Sometimes less is more when it comes to the written word - the important part in Dragon Consultant is that love is love, it takes all forms and sometimes a found family is the very best kind. Now that we've gotten that out of the way...

Dragon Consultant was adorable. The dragon kits, from the youngest to the oldest, were witty, cute, smart and not easily won over. They had experienced a lot in their short lives and they didn't trust easily. Dane was determined to find out what happened to them though and then he was willing to fight to make sure it never happened to them, or any other dragon, again. He was a pretty great hero.

It didn't take long to figure out that Dane and Mercury were made for each other. They were cautious though and neither one of them had a lot of self confidence in the romance department. In some ways, they were as adorable as the kits.

Dragon Consultant wasn't a long story, but it wasn't lacking. That doesn't mean that I didn't want more and since it's part of a series, I'm in luck. The re-release of Dragon Deception is coming soon!

The story is a nice idea and could have been really good, but it is overall way too short. I was really surprised when I suddenly read "Epilogue" while it felt like it should be more the middle of the book. I was missing some content, the drama/problems didn't feel big enough to be the whole story.
Also, even though I like a bit of modesty but those two mighty, good looking, magical creatures having inferiority complexes was a bit hard to believe...

Dragon Consultant is the introductory novella in a fantasy M/M series by Mell Eight. Originally published in 2015, this reformat/re-release was published 20th April 2020 by NineStar Press, it's not quite 100 pages and is available in ebook format.

This is a backstory/prequel for the series with world building and magic system featuring a demigod paranormal investigator and a vulnerable bronze dragon dad (with kits). It's sweet and lightly humorous and full of romance. It's not erotica, there's no on-screen physical descriptions apart from a few passionate kisses and a lot of soulful longing.

It's very light, the characters are anthropomorphic fantasy creatures (demigod investigator Dane has a banshee called Becky as an office manager), there are a whole bunch of young dragons foster dad Mercury has adopted/rescued from evil humans experimenting on them, add magic and stir. There is a light mystery plot element, to find the nefarious secret government science lab experimenting on the elemental air dragons, rescue them, take out the bad guys, and live happily ever after.

Very clean content, a few "damn"s and nothing worse. There are some potential triggers, kidnapping, experimentation on minor (dragons), magical murder, etc.

The author writes clearly, readably, and well. It's above average for the genre (paranormal romance).

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Wow!
Honestly, I've been a fan of Mell Eight since I first picked up one of their books back in 2016, and I've always loved their writing style, their storytelling. This book has been on my TBR for years! When it was re-published by NSP, I knew I couldn't wait any longer to read it. It had a beautiful new cover, no doubt new edits, and I could start the series without the rest of the series being completed, meaning slightly less pressure to immerse myself for the commitment of a 4-book-series.

I'm so glad I did. This book was amazing!

Dragon Consultant is everything it says on the tin and more. Not just dragons, not just the supernatural, and not just as sweet and lovely as the cover implies. It had heart, warmth, danger, family, and a journey. It's a combination of sad stories, happy families, and found families.

When it comes to the characters, I was bowled over by Dane. He was so unique, with a mystery that remained hinted at but unsolved until late into the book. I loved that we learned more about him with every page, with every encounter with the kits, and every interaction with Mercury. Mercury was just as interesting; unconscious when we first meet him, and then such a protective father to his kits. Together, they had great chemistry, and an amazing adventure ahead.

I floved the kits! I absolutely fell in love with snarky Nickel, withdrawn Copper, and my heart melted with every glimpse of little Lumie. I loved how all the dragons were named after elements, just as their nature demanded. It was a great piece of storytelling that, instantly related their name to their power, purpose and nature. So clever!

I can't wait for Book 2.

A cutesy novella -- it is barely 100 pages long -- that features two very hot guys secretly crushing on each other and a bucketful of dragon-lings! It was a very quick read for me and I had no problems connecting with the protagonists.

I would say that the lead couple does fall for each other too quickly. Deciding to take on a family of 5-6 kids isn't a spur of the moment kinda thing, so maybe the story should have ended with them trying to date first, instead of just moving in.

Another thing that bugged me was that the POVs alternate between the two guys. So, readers get a lot of the same info from both sources. Maybe cut back on the repetition and use that word count to develop the relationship from an insta-love kind of thing to something more substantial?

That said, I'm really interested in finding out what these characters -- and their kids -- do next!

P.S. there are experiments being done on kids, so if reading that will bother you, you may wanna skip this one.

A fun short read with likable characters and an engaging storyline that I had no problem blazing through. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

This was a fun, quick read which is exactly what I need with the world being.... well. You know. How everything is right now.

Watching Dane and Mercury pine for each other, each thinking the other could not *possibly* be interested kept the tension up without it being aggravating. The dragon kits all had unique personalities of their own and added something to the story, instead of just being "background noise".

I do wish that the kidnapping plot had been more developed, but perhaps that will be explored more in future stories.

I'm definitely going to be hunting down the other stories in this series now!

*3.5 Stars*

Dragon Consultant tells the story of Dane. Dane is a supernatural consultant with a famous firm. He helps anyone and everyone asking for help. When he stumbles onto a sick dragon and his kits, he knows something is amiss and takes them home until the dragon heals. Then, a lot happens.

This was a pretty short novella with pretty interesting characters but I felt like too much happened in too little time. It felt rushed, especially romance-wise. Still pretty good and interesting all over. I might read the rest of that series someday.

An enjoyable and engrossing read that I really liked.
It's well written, the plot kept me hooked and I liked the fleshed out characters.
I can't wait to read the next instalment.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I like how this book did not need what is considered to be "explicit content" in order to get the romance across. There was a lot of character development and relationship building and I am looking forward to the next installments!

Fair warning: This novella is a reprint of a work originally published in 2015.

In the world of the story, supernatural creatures of all kinds live openly among humans, but not always without problems. In this case, magically powerful Dane is asked to intervene because dragons are disrupting air travel. When he investigates, he discovers a bunch of dragon kits and an adult dragon, Mercury, who is dangerously ill. Saving Mercury’s life is only the beginning of the action, however, because it turns out that the reason Mercury was taking care of a bunch of unrelated kits in the first place was because he rescued them from secret labs where they were being experimented on by humans. Horrified, Dane agrees to help the dragons put an end to the experimentation.

So, the novella has a bit of mystery, lots of magic, a bunch of kids (well, kits), and just a hint of romance between Dane and Mercury. I liked it all well enough until the story cut off very abruptly at the end, which disappointed me. There’s an awkward, unnecessary epilogue that is clearly just an interlude in the action, given that the people who are behind the labs are still out there. According to the author’s website, more re-releases in the series are planned, which will likely tie up the plot threads left dangling in this one.

I’m not sure whether I’ll continue on, but readers looking for light fantasy romance featuring magic and dragon shifters might want to give this series a try.

Dragon Consultant reads as a cozy paranormal mystery for teens and YA. Dane is a supernatural consultant who has been hired to find out why dragons have been attacking planes in an area where they shouldn’t be and in a cluster of types that don’t normally hang out together. This is a sweet and sometimes sad story that left me wanting more.

*I requested this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

This book is in a genre I have recently become really interested in - contemporary fantasy. It is set in what approximates modern day, but with magic, magical beings, and all that that entails.

This story is told in a dual perspective between Dane, a magical consultant, and Mercury, an adult bronze dragon, who has come to Dane for help. Someone is kidnapping dragon kits and doing experiments on them.

I liked the set up of this world. It seemed as if magic and magical beings are known to the world at large which is an interesting set up. Although beyond Dane having a connection with a Federal unit for supernatural beings, we don't really see how the magical world and the non-magical world interact. And for the most part, I enjoyed the characters we met in the story. While they were enjoyable, none of them were too complex and the relationship between Dane and Mercury seems to have happened very quickly.

While as a whole I enjoyed this story, many of the threads in the story felt like they wrapped up too easily. The relationship coming together, who the villain is. I also did not love how Dane referred to Nickel. The first time, Dane referred to Nickel as a sociopath was kind of humorous but after that it became too much and was unnecessary as a whole. It felt more like Dane was making fun instead of trying to understand Nickel. He seems to understand that on a whole these dragons have been through some very awful things but that empathy stopped with Nickel.
