The author engages the reader by having Andersen tell his life story to a young girl who strikes up a conversation on a long ride. This clever format will draw children into the biography and they will recognize many of the characters along the way. The book could also be used as a writing model for older students. |
This book was well-written, and the illustration is amazing! I would be happy to buy the real book after this e-ARC (thanks NetGalley and the publisher!) I never really read anything about Andersen so this book was very informative ina creative way. |

This book has beautiful illustrations and the text is so uplifting but it's long (57 pages). That's a long book for elementary students. I'm not sure many children would choose to read this book, although it is a very interesting biography. |
Little Elsa could not contain her amazement at learning that she would not travel alone with her mother to Copenhagen, but would share a car with a man. Without a hint of shyness and with all the self-consciousness that she was capable of, Elsa began to ask questions of that man who called his attention so much to the dismay of his mother and the joy of Hans himself. Elsa loved to read and her favorites were fairy tales. Hans told her that he liked them too, but especially because he enjoyed writing them the most. So he set out to tell a story to Elsa, what she didn’t imagine was that more than a story, he was telling the story of his own life. He talked about how his childhood was marked by poverty and how his father worked to bring the family forward. But above all, how he never stopped stimulating his imagination, whether reading children’s stories or with plays performed with puppets that he himself created for Hans to enjoy. Soon little Hans realized that in the stories his father read, anything was possible, anything could happen just by wanting it. His father gave him wings and he made sure to convey the same message in each of the stories he wrote. I was very surprised by the way the story is told, with a short, simple text that is very much in line with the book which seems to have been written by Hans Christian Andersen himself. The details are all so well taken care of that even without reading the text, just by seeing the images and the mixture of colors used at all times, we can know what is happening. It is a book that once read, are always carried in the heart. Ideal to give and transmit from generation to generation. |
A gorgeous and wonderful story recounting Hans Christian Anderson's life. Its a great read for kids to learn about this great author and the formatting is easy to read. The art style in this book is very charming and beautiful. Overall, a great read for kids illustrating the life of Hans Christian Anderson in a easy and enjoyable way. |
Very sweet children's book, with lovely illustrations. I loved how Hans was able to explain the truth/moral behind some of his fairy tales to the young girl. |
An incredibly enchanting and well-composed book for children that had me hooked from the first page until the very last. Highly recommended. |
This is a gorgeous book - recounting the life story of the famous fairy tale author Hans Christian Anderson. I think it’s a great way to introduce little kids to this author and his works ... and the illustrations are amazing ,🌟🌟 |
When you've grown up watching or reading Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea, The Ugly Duckling, Little Mermaid you certainly have heard of Hand Christian Anderson. But even with the advent of the internet you have never really wanted to discover the author behind your childhood heroes. The author remained shrouded in mystery probably for the lack of an older adult searching him out. As such this beautifully illustrated fictionalised biography comes handy. Translated by North South Books into English and illustrated by Maja Kasetelic, this is one book I would be sure to share with the next generation in the hope they see the ‘magic’ behind the fairytales we grew up with. #NewFromNorthSouth #NetGalley |
This was nice in terms of the illustrations and colour palette, but I must admit that I did not find the prose very engaging. Far more could have been done with this. |

Before I even start, the illustrations are W-O-W!! I am blown away by how pretty this book is! Especially the flying goose, that was cool. Okay, to the review: This is a great, little non-fiction book about Hans Christian Anderson's life. There's lots of still frames coloured beautifully, in what looks like water colour, to showcase Hans' life. He tells his story to a little girl in a trolley, and it whisks them away to his adventure. The fairy tales he tells are full of colour and wonder, lighting up the page. I think this is a unique and absolutely marvellous way to tell a story. I'm super intrigued and honestly adored it! It's fantastic and I highly recommend both kids and adults alike pick it up. It's a gem! Five out of five stars. Thank you to NetGalley and North South Books for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. |
A fascinating and beautiful picture book about the life of Hans Christian Andersen! In the story Andersen tells a little girl about his life and how stories and imagination helped him survive truly difficult circumstances. I was captivated by this book and his life story! I would recommend this for early elementary school aged children as it's somewhat long. Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for providing this ARC. |

AM ENCHANTED BY THIS BOOK!!! Always love full colored books, but this one is a biography book. Am not a big fans of one, nevertheless presented as a comic book, with not as much as text, this one is interesting. Please do make time to read Hans C Andersen's life through this book, I really enjoyed it, and I believe you will too. I just reviewed Hans Christian Andersen by Heinz Janisch. #NewFromNorthSouth #NetGalley |
this was really cute and i really enjoyed it!! the illustrations were amazing and i could see many people loving this :) |
This would be excellent to read alongside a collection of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. The author did an excellent job of presenting facts of Andersen's life within his own fictional and fantastical story. This would be a great addition to a school or personal library. |
Although I haven't read autobiography of Hans Christian Andersen this is one particular book that encourages me to learn more about the man who has brought us a bunch of singular and well-known fairy tales. This book is a graphic novel that explores the basic milestones of this famous author by setting him in a shared coach along with a mother and her young but curious child. As a result of him being questioned, Andersen explores his life by comparing it and its numerous similarities to the elements that some of his fairy tale protagonists have to deal with. The writing is simple to understand, explores the life of an interesting man and also explores some concepts that may be confusingly complex. It allows the reader to also be able to put themselves into the world of Andersen and to see how fairy tales aren't just for the young but a story whose own similarities can be seen in our own lives as well even if we are only using them to mirror back others as well. The story includes a nice biographical page at the end about Andersen for those who may be interested to further learn about him while mentioning his autobiography called "The Fairy Tale of My Life" for those who are interested. What I really enjoyed about this, though, was the coloring palettes of the book. While he was talking about his own life the color palette was a bit on the dull and natural side. But when he started to tell his own story or relate the fairy tales the colors were bright and full of suggestions to all kinds of his famous tales although sadly "The Little Mermaid" wasn't mentioned in the telling. The only complaint I had for the illustrations was the fact that the illustration insisted upon sharp triangular long noses for all the characters. All in all it was a great introduction to one of the greatest authors that we have had in the fantasy world and one that would surely intrigue fairy tale fans no matter the age. **Please note I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review** |

I requested and received an e-ARC from Heinz Janisch and North South Books Inc. through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Wow, what a beautiful and poignant story about the life of Hans Christian Anderson. I have always enjoyed reading Mr. Andersen’s fairy tales, they were some of my favorite stories as a child. I must admit that I did not know a lot about the life of Hans Christian Andersen. Thank you for writing this beautiful book and sharing the fairy tale journey of how a cobbler’s son became an internationally recognized writer. |
I enjoyed the telling through the illustrations of Hans telling a young girl how he grew up and mentions of the stories he wrote. The illustrations are really nice - a grayer colour for his childhood and bright colours for him talking and the mentions of stories. |

As a fan of Hans Christian Anderson I thoroughly loved this book and the illustrations. I can't wait to be able to buy for my nieces and nephews |
The illustrations alone in the book are lovely. In this book Elsa is riding in a coach with her mother and riding with them is Hans Christian Andersen. Hans tells the little girl about about his life, the fairy tales he has written, and about magic in the world. I enjoyed learning about Hans Christian Andersen in the book and following the story with the illustrations made it that much more enjoyable. |
