I have a hot/cold relationship with Ruth Ware books. I've read all her previous novels, and seem to either love them or feel quite indifferent about them. Sadly, One by One fell into the latter.

This wasnt a bad book by any stretch of the imagination, but it didnt grip me like Turn Of The Key or The Death of Mrs. Westaway.

The claustrophobic setting of the slopes definitely give this book an original ambiance, which I did enjoy. The characters were okay, and the twists were decent enough despite my guessing every plot twist that came about - I think any regular thriller reader will.

All in all, this was your average 3 star book. I'd be lying if I said I wasnt disappointed as I know the author can do better. Meh.

It’s just an ordinary corporate retreat that will be held at a luxurious chalet in the French Alps. But, the company is anything but ordinary. Snoop is an innovative tech startup that’s taken the industry by storm. The company has been offered a buyout that will make the shareholders wealthy but will also shatter the plans of one of the founders. Now, with all the shareholders as well as key employees present, the retreat can be used for discussion and decisions (as well as skiing). But, no one counted on the avalanche….

Ruth Ware has done it again. One by One is a taut, tense, and totally enthralling story about a group of people who find themselves in dire circumstances. While this is a locked room mystery of the finest order, it is made even better by Ms Ware’s descriptive writing. She is able to weave the personalities of the characters almost seamlessly into her story, while creating an atmospheric and psychological thriller that will keep you reading through the night. It is easy to understand why books by Ruth Ware are always at the top of my reading list.

(On a personal note, One by One was a perfect read, since my area of the country is currently experiencing 100+ temperatures with little to no rain. What better way to keep cool than to read a story that takes place in the Alps in the winter!)

Thank you, Ms Ware, for writing yet another stellar book. It’s 4.5 stars for sure!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

Ruth Ware's best story yet - very reminiscent of an Agatha Christie, yet still very much true to Ruth Ware's own individual style. Highly recommend!

Ruth Ware excels at writing suspense taking place in remote places and this book follows suit! Another edge-0f-your-seat thriller in a new , frosty setting!

I loved Ruth Ware’s last book The Turn of the Key so I was excited to receive this E- ARC from Netgalley for review. Unfortunately, that’s where the excitement ended for me. I was so bored with this story; I thought of giving up several times. A locked-room thriller is right up my reading alley but the way this unraveled wasn’t thrilling.

Spoiler* If you pay attention to the points of view for the chapters, it is blatantly obvious of the outcome. * So frustrating.

I am disappointed and don’t know how quickly I will pick up another book from Ruth Ware as she runs hot and cold for me.

Thank you to NetGalley, Ruth Ware, and Gallery Books for allowing me to read One By One in exchange for an honest review.
I love all of Ruth Ware’s books, full of mystery that keeps me glued to her stories. One By One kept me reading straight thru to the end. When an up-and-coming tech startup, snoop, has a retreat in a beautiful chalet in the French Alps, company members all look forward to skiing and discussing company business. Danny and Erin, managing the chalet, work hard on preparations for the perfect week. When a team member dies, and an avalanche traps them in, it looks like there may be more excitement than they had expected. How many team members will go home alive? You won’t put this down until you find the answers to this exciting book.

Ruth Ware’s "One by One" is a classic whodunit that solidifies her reputation at the contemporary Agatha Christie. In homage to "And Then There Were None," the novel’s suspense builds and builds until it culminates in a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse that will keep you racing through the remaining pages.

This book was a great "whodunnit" by Ruth Ware (author of The Woman in Cabin 10) being released on September 8, 2020 and fans of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None need to snatch it up quick! Told from 2 different voices, this is the story of how a small start up tech company comes crashing down after a fatal skiing accident and an unexpected avalanche change the lives of those on a corporate retreat at a luxury chalet in the French Alps. Slowly, one by one, people begin to mysteriously die, and in an attempt to stay alive, the remaining people pair up so no one is ever left alone. But, who is left with the killer? #netgalley #onebyone

I’m a huge Ruth Ware fan and she doesn’t disappoint with this new thriller. This is definitely a fast paced story that has the reader on the edge of their seat. Even though I figured out who the killer was pretty early on, it in no way ruined the book for me. I enjoyed reading the story from the perspectives of Liz and Erin. The author captures the theme of the haves and the have Nots perfectly and grapples with the question of how far someone would go to keep a secret and to become successful. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of great thrillers.

Most boring book of the year.

Boring one dimension characters that I didn't care about. I kept trying to act interested in this book but seriously I had y dnf it. It's been a week and I'm at 100 pages. I reached a point that I just hoped that everyone was murdered.

I didn't care to hear about the stupid app anymore. I hated the work retreat. What a dud of a book.

Ruth Ware is such a hit or miss for me so this was just a miss for me.

Thanks to netgalley and publishers for the advanced copy of this book.

A London tech company group meets up in a lovely little chalet, high in the French Alps. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? What could go wrong? Well my friends, welcome to the world of Ruth Ware. If you have read any of her other books, you know a whole lot is going to go wrong.

The story is told in alternating chapters in the voices of Erin, who works there, and Liz, who is an outlier and ex-employee of the company. There is talk about selling the company and talks about going public. The people attending are all in different camps. When one disappears, things start to turn for the worse. The first murder changes things completely. Add an avalanche to complete the eerie claustrophobic atmosphere and you will not want to put it down until the end.

This is another really great outing from Ms. Ware. I have never been disappointed in her work. She always strings you along with little bits and pieces that make you think one way and then in the next instant, completely change your view. I really enjoyed Erin and her thought process throughout. She is definitely someone worth rooting for.

Thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books for an advance copy of this book.

ONE BY ONE • Ruth Ware • ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Brief Synopsis: When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy tech startup, organizes a weeklong trip for the team in the French Alps, it starts out as a corporate retreat like any other. But as soon as one shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative buyout offer, tensions arise and loyalties are tested. Things worsen when an avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further...one by one.

This book is told through the POV of Erin, a chalet employee with a dark past, and Liz, a minor shareholder in Snoop. Overall, I would say it was an average "who did it" mystery that tended to fall on the more predictable side of things.

Honestly, I was a tad bored with this one. There were a lot of characters and very little character development so I found myself indifferent to everyone. The ending also dragged on after the killer was revealed for seemingly no reason. I am all for a good mystery thriller, but the slowly unwinding mystery really does not seem to be doing it for me, especially when I think the characters are pretty uninteresting.

TL;DR: If you like slow mysteries with lots of characters, this book is for you. If you like Ware's other books, maybe lower your expectations a touch for this one.

This was a fun locked-room mystery told from the POV of two of the main characters. I figured out “whodunnit” pretty early on in the book, but I still enjoyed all the twists and turns that led to the big reveal.

Ruth Ware is becoming a favorite author of mine. I loved last year’s The Turn of the Key and have several others on my shelves ready to be read.

In this fast-paced murder mystery, guests at a ski resort (a group of tech company employees), beginning dying one by one. Each murder is a little different but one thing is for sure - the killer is someone on the premises. At first I felt there were too many characters to keep track of, but since this isn’t the type of book that needs a ton of character development, it didn’t end up being a problem for me. There is a handy little character cheat sheet at the beginning if needed though.

I loved this book and finished it in one sitting! I definitely recommend adding this one to your shelf as soon as it comes out.

I was very honored when Netgalley informed me that I would receive an ARC of this new book by the talented Ruth Ware! However, this particular book fell short of expectations for me, the huge cast of characters at the beginning, along with the App jargon was confusing, and very boring through the first half of the entire book; I became so bored I read another book also was easy to spot the killer thanks to the beginning of each chapter, I feel the editor lacked oversight in this particular case, including the need for a proof reader this close to the launch date?

Holy cow where do I begin?!

I had a hard time putting this novel down! The beginning was slightly dry but once the story got going I binged in in a matter of one night!

The story goes like this:

Erin and her friend Danny work at a chalet up in the mountains where skiing is basically a full time job up there! Danny works the kitchen and Erin does everything else essentially... incoming the new house guests for the week. The cofounders and their group of coworkers coming to the chalet for some bonding, skiing, and presentations. This is where we meet Liz, a minority stock holder in Snoop....One cofounder wants to sell out and the other doesn’t. Which leads into an unraveling spiraling story of events that leave you breathless one sentence at a time.

I loved how this book went from Erins point of view to Lizs point of view. It gives the boom a whole new vibe and gives more meaning to the characters. I honestly could NOT put this books down!!

Thank you to the publishers for an advanced copy!! I loved every moment of this book!

We all know ISOLATION these days. What if a crime was added to the mix ? Great mystery with heart pounding excitement. A good read for 2020.

Oh, how I envy the creative minds of fiction writers! Mind you, I'm a writer too - not a bad one, even. And I probably could make a convincing case that writing a newspaper account of the same event 10 different times in 10 different ways gives me some claim to creativity. But the kind that's in this book? Only in my dreams.

That's a roundabout way of saying those dreams came true in this book (which, happily, was written by someone with actual talent for fiction). Not only is it an engrossing story, it took what to me is a new approach that made it stand out among all the others I read every month (86 so far this year). To begin with, there's a timely hook: a British social media tech company called Snoop that offers a wildly popular music app that allows members to "see" what other members are listening to in real time. The shareholders have gathered at a ski chalet for some R and R, but right off the bat, things go a bit haywire with the realization that one who is here was left off the guest list sent to the chalet hosts. Inadvertently? Maybe yes, maybe no. Then comes the founder's announcement that could spell gloom or doom for the company going forward.

Faced with incoming inclement weather, the group decide to hit the slopes before they're shut down. And from that moment on, things go from bad to worse as an avalanche cuts off all communication with the rest of the world and shareholders start taking hits "one by one." The only things they're sure of is that there's nowhere to go but down (and even going in that direction could lead to dire consequences) and one among them is, shall we say, not a very nice person.

From the middle of the book on, it was hard for me to put down; sorry to say I can't share many of the juicy details without spoiling things for others who haven't yet read the book. Suffice it to say I was happy that an event we'd planned was canceled, thus giving me two straight edge-of-seat hours to finish up. Thoroughly enjoyable, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for providing me with a pre-release copy to read and review.

I always enjoy a book about a storm, and this one is perfectly atmospheric. Erin and Danny work as hosts for a luxurious chalet in the French Alps. When a group of up and coming co-workers for a successful start up arrive, an avalanche hits, the chalet becomes cut off, people start going missing, and tensions rise in the chalet.

This book has all the elements of a great read and crime novel. The characters are strong, the setting (literally and figuratively) chilling, and the suspense will keep you reading.

This is the first book I've read by Ruth Ware, and I plan to read more!

This was my favorite Ruth Ware book to date! The characters were much more likeable than in some of her books so I found myself more invested in them & cared more about them. It was a definite page turner.

This gripping story is perfect for fans of The Guest List by Lucy Foley or And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. One by One is the chilling tale of a corporate retreat in the Alps gone wrong. This story is told from the point of view of 2 women: Erin and Liz. Erin manages the house the retreat takes place in, along with her friend and house chef, Danny. Liz is an outcast from the company, a former employee whose anxiety makes the reader question why she was invited at all... ? This is not an ordinary retreat however-- while it may seem like an opportunity for the young, rich, and cool to show off their status and blow off some steam on the slopes, there is much more at play. Including the fate of the company. Power plays by the co-founders will leave the reader trying to put together the pieces of a fascinating mystery, which of course would not be complete without a shocking ending. I hope you enjoy this mystery/thriller as much as I do! This is definitely a stay up all night, read in one sitting, type of book!
