I was excited to start this book as I have read others by Hawkins and liked them. I didn't love but did really enjoy this book and read it in one sitting. The alternating POVs were done well and I loved Bea's portion of the book. I wish that some parts of the story were explored more, like the relationship between Bea/Blanche as well as Jane's background. I think it we had more character development there it would have really added to this story.

This is a mystery thriller. I was into this book, and I had to keep reading to find out how it end. I did guess some of the things that was happening in this book, but I did not see the ending happening how it did. I really think the characters where developed. I can see people either liking or hating this book. This is not going to be a book that is going to fells in the middle, and I think it will depend on if you guess the ending. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Press) or author (Rachel Hawkins) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that. This book is schedule to be release on January 5-2021.

The Wife Upstairs is a smart, atmospheric novel with some of the best Gothic undertones I've read in a long time! Fans of Ruth Ware won't want to miss this stunning domestic suspense. It's a nail biting and thrilling read that will keep you up long into the night!

WOW. From page 1 to the last page this story grabbed my attention and kept it. I loved the multiple p[points of view, It flowed well, The characters were both sympathetic and distasteful at the same time. I loved the pace of the story it all flowed well and the ending was so explosive I read it 3 times!!!!

Pulled me in from the first page! Billed as a re-imagining of Jane Eyre which kind of put me off but don't let it! This story had so many twists and turns! A big drama with a dash of a prestigious small town Alabama wealthy community thrown in. It kept me guessing until the very end.

Thank you to netgalley.com for the opportunity to read this ARC. This is my first experience reading the author and I look to more adult fiction from her. Lots of twists and turns take what could have been just another murder, mystery thriller to the next level. Jane and Bee - two peas in a warped pod. Blanche the poor little rich girl, educated in the finer pints passive-aggressive behavior is not incapable of a little psychological warfare to keep things off balance. My only objection is that the characters are young, but some are written as though they are much older. I thought Tripp was in his sixties.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.
Is the grass really greener on the other side? Jane thinks it is when she takes a job as a dog walker in an upscale, Southern neighborhood. So what if she lifts a few small things from bored housewives when she returns their pet? They'll never even notice! When she meets handsome Eddie Rochester, a recently widowed man in the neighborhood, her life takes a turn. Suddenly, she's becoming part of the neighborhood where once she was an after thought. It's almost as though she's stepping into the very stylish shoes of Eddie's supposedly dead wife, Bea. But is Bea really dead? What really happened that hot, summer night out by the lake? And who was responsible?
While none of the characters were inherently likeable in this book, I still enjoyed it. Jane is tough, no nonsense, and guarding her own secrets. She sees life as a game to be played, with winners and losers, and she's determined o be a winner. I like that the story is told from different perspectives, I think that the character development is good, but sometimes it felt a little too on the nose. After all, we're talking about people that don't seem to have much in the way of goodness about them. Greedy. Self serving. Even mercenary. Somehow, though it all works, and provides the reader with a good, quick read.

Jane moves to Alabama to escape her past. She begins to dog-walk in a wealthy gated community and meets Eddie, a handsome widower who's wife recently drowned with her friend in a boating accident. Jane eventually moves in with Eddie and discovers some mysterious behavior with Eddie and suspects things are not as they seem. This was a really fast-paced, escape reality thriller. I loved the writing style and the details of the characters. Loved it!

Wow, excellent thriller with lots of twists and turns that you don’t know who’s the bad guy till the end , definitely a page turner, I’m going to have to check out more books by this author

A great interpretation of a classic. Twisty, scary, and hard to forget. I think Charlotte Bronte would approve.

Wowza! What a great ending! Jane gets what she wants but did Eddie and Bea? Excellent twists. It’s well written- I don’t usually stick with books whose lead characters I don’t like. I never really cared about Jane but I had to know her story. I got sucked into her story. This would make an excellent movie!

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC.Some reviews say this book is a "retelling" of the classic Jane Eyre. It's not, it's a blatant ripoff of names from Jane Eyre. It was so distracting I almost stopped reading. But I wanted to do the book and publisher justice so I kept reading. The story itself was really good and I wasn't expecting the ending. The characters were good and believable. The Jane Eyre stuff ruined it for me though.

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy of The Wife Upstairs.
Overall I found this to be a really good book, quick read full of twists however it was incredibly predictable. Jane has just moved to Birmingham when she meets Eddie who is a recent widower. Eddie’s wife Bea drowned while away with her best friend Blanche and her body still hasn’t been recovered. To Jane, Bea seems like the perfect wife. Incredibly successful, beautiful and loved by everyone, Jane starts to think she won’t measure up. But is everything what it seems?? There seem to be a lot people didn’t know about Bea and Eddie, and Jane is hiding a lot of secrets of her own. I guess if you don’t read too much into things like I do, the twist could be a surprise but for me I saw it coming very early on!

This book exceeded my expectations. It was fast-paced, kept my interest, and had oh so many twists and turns. Recommended for fans of Chevy Stevens. For someone who has been struggling to read for fun during this pandemic, this book was the perfect cure!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC.

I didn't care for this thriller. I found the characters unbelievable and the writing often silly. If you this one, I hope you enjoy it more than me.

Modern day Jane Eyre retelling. Very fast paced and had me from page 1, although it was very predictable. Reccomend for an easy beach read.

I throughly enjoyed every page of this book!! Rachel Hawkins reeled me in on page 1 and didn't let go until the very end.
A modern day retelling of Jane Eyre (which I have never read...don't hate me!) has Jane (not her real name...she has a mysterious past!) working as a dogwalker in a prestigious neighbourhood in Alabama. Then she meets Eddie, the lonely widower (who also happens to be extremely wealthy). They hit it off right away and the next thing she knows she moved into his mansion and they are engaged to be married. If only she could shake the ghost of his dead wife Bea.
I found The Wife Upstairs to be a perfect summer read. It was a captivating story with likable & interesting characters and a satisfying ending. I definitely be will recommending this one to friends.
Thank you to #Netgalley and @StMartinsPress for an advanced copy of #TheWifeUpstairs by Rachel Hawkins!

What do you get when you combine Gone Girl with Jane Eyre? A fast-paced, southern gothic thriller that you can't put down! For fans of Mary Kubica and Ruth Ware.
Jane, former foster child, current down on her luck, dog walker and petty thief, longs to live the life of her rich southern clients in the Thornfield Estates. Nevermore than when she meets Eddie, gorgeous, interested, wealthy. And most importantly, recently widowed.
With an eye to escaping her sketchy past for the safety that wealth brings, Jane dives into a relationship with Eddie even when his wife's disappearance turns into a murder investigation and everyone knows that the husband is the likely suspect.
Fans of Jane Eyre will appreciate the callouts throughout the book. Suspense fans, enjoy a story told with multiple unreliable narrators. With some fairly pointed commentary about wealth, privilege, even lifestyle brands this was a twisty and compelling read that was difficult to put down.

Victorian gothic meets southern gothic in this modern retelling of Jane Eyre. Those who haven’t read the classic can easily jump into this as a domestic thriller. Those who have read Jane Eyre might be more drawn in by seeing how Hawkins adapts the novel to modern-day Birmingham than by tension in the plot, since they already know what happens.
Or at least they think they do. I enjoyed this book most in the final quarter of the book, when Hawkins departs from the original story. I also so enjoyed how much agency the women had in this novel, which was a welcome departure from the original as well.

Really enjoyed this book. I figured out the ending but it was a good fast read anyway. Highly recommend.
