We see plenty of books about individual animals. Or about animals that share a trait. Or about extremes in the animal kingdom. We don't get many that explore differences in a single body part. We don't put much thought into the differences between eyes other than color or maybe size. But there is so much to learn here. We learn that owls have cylindrical eyes. That a sea star's eyes are at the ends of it's arms. That a cuttlefish has W shaped pupils. But Levine does more than tell us these unusual facts. She gives us a basic explanation of why. This book is accessible to very young readers and the illustrations are quite appealing.

Eye by Eye: Comparing How Animals See is a nonfiction picturebook written by Sara Levine and illustrated by T.S. Spooktooth. It is currently scheduled for release on September 1 2020.

What kind of animal would you be if you had eight eyes? Or if your pupils were the shape of the letter W? Keep an eye out for weird and surprising facts in this playful picture book, which brings together comparative anatomy with a guessing game format. See how your animal eyes are like—and unlike—those of starfish, spiders, goats, cuttlefish, owls, and slugs.

Eye by Eye: Comparing How Animals See is a wonderful look at the ingenuity of nature. The text was clear and engaging- making the information understandable and interesting to read. The art work pairs pretty much perfectly with the text- adding details in interest to each page. Some of the information was brand new to me, like the shape of a cuddlefish's pupil. Even the information I knew was presented in a way that made it fun and interesting to read. Every page was fun to look at, and engaging to read. I also enjoyed the bits of extra information and resources included in the endpages. That always makes me happy. I think this book would be a great addition to libraries, schools, classroom, and personal school collections.

I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Levine takes readers through different animals' eyes and how they see the world. She offers information about an eye style and asks readers to guess what type of animal has eyes like that. Simple to follow text offers information on a wide variety of animals. Informative text and further reading suggestions at the end of the book. The illustrations enhance the text for younger readers.

Every day there are new discoveries made and more ways to hear about them - books, the internet, the tv, school, or experts to name a few. But how does one make sense of all this information in a meaningful way? Sara Levine, veterinarian, teacher and author, has found the perfect way to engage elementary aged children and help them to take in and learn from some interesting facts about how animals survive. The facts are presented visually one at a time with simple illustrations of children with the eyes of various animals. They are seen with the eight eyes of a spider, the traveling eye of the flounder, eyes at the ends of their limbs as is true for starfish and the different shaped pupils of rattlesnakes, cuttlefish, deer, etc. After being asked to predict which animal would have the pictured eye type there is a page that shows the animal and why a particular style of eye is best to ensure their survival.
I highly recommend this book for children 5-10. It would be a valuable addition to libraries, schools, zoo programs and homes. It should be noted that the author has already published Bone by Bone, Fossil by Fossil and Tooth by Tooth.
