I confess that I haven't read the original yet, but in this children's adaptation I got to know the story superficially and make me even more anxious to read the original. It is for small young people, and is adapted in a simple way for everyone, and with very beautiful illustrations. |
I can see this being a good recommendation for older children who struggle with larger chapter books or for a Next Chapter book club. I think it translates the complexity of the original text in a much more digestible way. |
*Thanks so much to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for sharing this ARC with me to review. All opinions are mine.* Pride & Prejudice is a story that has been cherished by many generations of readers and has been told, adapted, and retold time and time again. I thought this Easy Classics adaptation was well done and stayed true to the story while simplifying it for young readers. The narrative was entertaining and very easy to follow. The length was perfect, and it could easily be read a few chapters at a time at bedtime over a week. I definitely like the idea of being able to share a story I love with my 8 year old niece in a way that is accessible to her. I did have a few concerns that I wanted to address. The illustrations were cute and I enjoyed their whimsical style, but I'd like to see publishers of kid's books move away from drawings of women with giant doll eyes, giraffe necks, and stick thin waists. A 2019 study found that eating disorders are on the rise for kids younger than 12, and we know this is directly linked to the constant barrage of unrealistic body ideals in children's toys and media. I want to see bodies with more realistic proportions in books like this. Representation matters and it's important for kids to see normal looking bodies having nice things happen to them. I also puzzled for a long time on how to best share a story like Pride and Prejudice with a young reader. Because the story is so simplified, a lot of Jane Austen's original nuance is (understandably) lost, and in turn it made the story a little more sincere than satire. An adult reading this with a child could emphasize the ridiculousness of characters like Mrs. Bennett, Lydia, Lady Catherine, and Mr. Collins, but a kid reading this independently might miss out on the subtler parts of the story, and then this just becomes a book about the Mrs. Bennett quickly marrying off her daughters. (Also good luck explaining to an 8 year old why Lydia HAD to marry Mr. Wickham after she went to London with him, whew). A reader's guide with some discussion questions to help a kid's reading companion add context to the story would have been a welcome addition. In conclusion, I found this to be a very nice adaptation of a classic story that I think middle grade readers will enjoy. I would absolutely recommend that a child and an adult reading companion share this story together so that they can discuss some of the social norms of the time and how they might be different (or similar!) to now. Thanks again to Sweet Cherry Publishing. I give this book 3/5 stars. |
Pride and Prejudice Adapted by Gemma Barder Rating: 5/5 I am such a huge fan of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice including all the movies and mini-series. I was curious to see how the author would adapt the material for children, and I was not disappointed. The author is able to clearly tell the story without some of the extra flowery language and simplifying some of the scenes. She keeps the lovely humor and her tone light. I was very impressed with her ability to get all the emotions correct and keep the characters as true to the original as possible. I also loved the illustrations. They were similar to anime and delightful portrayals of my favorite characters. I highly recommend this adaptation for those that want to share the brilliance of Pride and Prejudice with children. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received. |
This books has illustrations. And they are so great also as a middle grade novel the books is a must read. The book is very fast read! Thank you netgalley for an e-arc in exchange of an honest review. |

The classic is very well adapted into easier words and an understandable plot for children.A very good way to introduce kids into classics. The illustrations are very pretty and make it easier to go through the story. |
In this review, I'm going to go full spoiler, because I assume someone reading this has read the original or at least seen a film adaptation. This is a much simpler version, including all of the main characters and plot points. The illustrations are absolutely adorable. I love the colorful cover, and throughout the book there are cute, cartoony illustrations of the characters during all of the major parts of the plot. We get at least one illustration per chapter. I really felt like they added a level of interest for kids as this is a story about adults! I know reluctant readers are drawn to books with cartoon characters in them, at least at the moment. I do think a few of the nuances from the original title could have remained in this adaptation. This one is pretty straight-forward, without too much discussion of the social aspects beyond Elizabeth's family being beneath Darcy's status-wise. I think a child in the intended audience age-range could understand a few things that weren't brought up: 1) why Elizabeth made friends with Wickham and believed him - Darcy insulted her, so she doesn't want to like him and will believe anything mean about him! 2) why Elizabeth didn't tell anyone Georgiana's secret - it would have ruined Georgiana's life if the secret was out 3) and why it would have ruined Georgiana's life/why Lydia has to marry Wickham. Children can understand that during that time and culture, men and unmarried women weren't allowed to be alone together. I think it would have driven home more that Wickham is the bad guy. Overall, this was a really lovely adaptation and I think this would be a good series to introduce to young children interested in reading the classics or reluctant readers. This was a 4 star read for me. My thanks to NetGalley, the adapter and the publisher for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review. |
I think this book is great for elementary school children as a first dip into one of the classics. The illustrations add an extra layer of detail to the text. |
'Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children's Stories' by Jane Austen with adaptation by Gemma Barder is a young reader adaptation of the classic novel. Mrs. Bennet wants to get her daughters gainfully married. When a handsome and rich new neighbor moves in, Mrs. Bennet is elated. Daughter Lizzie meets Mr. Darcy and she doesn't like him, but that may change. This is actually a pretty decent adaptation of the story. There are some illustrations throughout the story. I'm not sure if young readers would find a story of engagements and marriages, but if you want to introduce a young reader to a classic work of literature, this is a pretty good one. I received a review copy of this ebook from Sweet Cherry Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook. |
Title: Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children's Stories): Jane Austen Children's Stories Authors: Jane Austen (original author), Gemma Barder (adapted by) Publisher: Sweet Cherry Publishing ISBN: 9781782266136 Edition: E-Book Publication date: 09/07/2020 Content: "Mrs. Bennet is desperate to find rich husbands for her daughters, so the arrival of a charming new neighbour is welcome indeed. Sadly, the friend he brings with him is not. Mr. Darcy seems to have even more pride than money. Nobody likes him - least of all Elizabeth Bennet. But not everyone is who they seem. " Opinion: Firstly, I wanted to talk about the illustrations. They are so lovely that I immediatelly fell in love with them. The illustrations are perfectlyl fitting for a childrens book. The text adaption for children is also totally nice and well done. I love "Pride and Prejudice" in general, so I really wanted to read the children's book too. I think that it is understandable for children, especially with the illustrations in the book. Conclusion: All in all, it is a very nice book for children, but also parents for reading it to their children or people who love Jane Austen and her stories. I would totally recommend it! |

I thought this was a great adaptation of Pride and Prejudice for a younger audience. I loved the pictures. My girls (4 & 6) read a couple of chapters each night and the fact that they wanted to read the book and looked forward to it is a win for me. I look forward to reading more in this series. Many thanks to Net Galley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book. |
This was a delighful read. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book, so I can be a little bit nit-picky about it's adaptations. However, Gemma Barder did an excellent job turning the classic story of manners into a story children can enjoy. The illustrations of the book, while cute and beautiful, were some times unrelated to the scene being read. There are also instances in which the story will describe a certain character as frowning and the drawing will have them smiling. It was a little bit confusing, but not something that completely affected my enjoyment of the book. Overall, I think this is a great way to get children interested in classics and, hopefully, falling in love with Jane Austen's characters. |
The cover and illustrations are absolutely lovely. Pride and Prejudice is a literary masterpiece, and this edition for children did its best to capture the story's essence. It's fast-paced and the number of characters may be overwhelming at first, but I'm sure the children will close the book with a satisfied smile on their faces, absolutely in love with the story and its sweet, happy ending. |
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read and review Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children’s Stories). A perfect introduction of a classic piece of literature for low level or young readers. The story was written in simple language with nice illustrations to support the text. |
Perhaps there are some stories that don't adapt well to being written for a younger audience. The story was infantilized to the point of losing a lot of its essence. It states that it is a middle grade book, but it feels more suited for elementary. It can also use a large look over by a grammar editor. |
This is absolutely wonderful. I wish I could give it ten stars! It is so true to the story, but makes it easy for a child to understand. It is a perfect introduction to a classic novel. Some adults would benefit from reading this first! I thought of Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare as I read it. There aren't enough words to express how valuable this is for teachers and parents who want their children to be introduced to and love classic literature. I hope there are more like this coming and not only for Jane Austen's books, but also for other classic authors. |
Title: Pride and Prejudice Author: Jane Austen Adapted by: Gemma Barder Rating: 5 stars This story is a classic. Following Lizzy Bennet and strong willed girl who by happenstance meets Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, and though at first they don’t see eye to eye their lives become intertwined, and they both realize how they were wrong about each other. I squealed with this book it has all the interesting bits of the original but set to a level children can read. I think it was a very good adaptation. It kept the lines from the original work by Austen I believe that Barder did a very good job adapting the book into a children’s novel. I am ordering a copy for my daughter. I loved this book! I think that the decision to release some of the classics as children’s stories is brilliant. Even though it is shortened version of the full book I think it was an excellent tribute and it reminded me as an adult why I love the story so much. The book covers all the main parts of the story and it is a very enjoyable and likable adaptation. You get to see the personalities of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy and I hope that this will introduce them to these fabulous characters and encourage them to read the full version, and/or watch come of the TV and film adaptations. It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended and a great introduction to the world of Jane Austen – simply delightful! |
This kiddie retelling of my favourite book is extremely short- 96 pages including tons of illustrations (there’s one at least on every page). The pace of narration is breathtakingly brisk- I felt like I was riding a bicycle with no brakes. You know, speeding along faster and faster to the inevitable crash. 😬 The beloved characters have been whittled down to bare bones, there is zero context setting, and electric situations fraught with chemistry are stripped of all emotion. This lean and simplified narrative may work well for the target audience (7+), but to what end? Kids will finish the book, but will have completely missed the point. Without the context of society in the early 1800s, today’s kids will never understand why everyone is so hung up on getting married or why Lydia and Wickham leaving Brighton together is such a scandal or why Darcy says he wants to marry Lizzy “against his better judgment”. If the characters are reduced to cute caricatures with no explanation of their feelings or motivations, how will young readers empathise with them and love them? And so, yet another timeless classic will be relegated to the “weird old stuffy books” category. The illustrations are fun, but borrow a bit too heavily from the 2005 film adaptation. Recommended for 8-10 year olds ONLY IF a parent/teacher/caregiver reads it with them, explains the context and answers any questions. |
5 stars This was such a delight to read. I adore Pride and Prejudice since I was very little and I wanted to share this with my niece who's 5 and loving books and it was such a nice read to do with her. It took us 3 days to finish but she absolutely loved it and that's what I wanted when I asked for this ARC. Thank you so much to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this ARC for an honest review. |
