It was lovely to live out the antics of Mrs. Bennett desiring her daughters to marry and the dance between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. The preconceived conceptions and the redemption of Mr. Darcy. The illustrations are simple but they tie so well with this well known story that never gets old with me.

A must add to your collection of classics.

A Special Thank you to Sweet Cherry Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

I love this story so much and this adaptation to Children Story is so beautiful.

The adaptation from the novel gives us just what we need to know from all the key parts of the books without losing some of my favorite lines and accompanied by gorgeous illustrations.

This was wonderful! What a great introduction to Jane Austen and the P & P cast. I thought it perfectly suited to children. I also loved all the illustrations.

I highly recommend this book.

This was a NETGALLEY gift from the publisher and all opinions are my own.

This is a very short version of Pride and Prejudice that would probably be suitable for those under 10. As an introduction to Jane Austen's most famous work, it succeeds wonderfully. It abbreviates the story but retains some of the humor and vocabulary of the original. Although it has to summarize a lot, it slows down as needed to add detail to the important moments. Young readers could use this book as a bridge to watching one of the adaptations, or to reading the original when they feel ready.

There are also really charming illustrations in this version!

I don’t have children but I’m always keeping an eye out for books to give my nieces and nephews.

How do you explain the Regency era to children? Especially girls and the marriage market, and the concept of social class when in 2020 we are supposed to be dismantling such barriers. I thought it would be quite interesting to see how they explained this, or if they gave the story a slight makeover in the style of contemporary children’s books, emphasizing Lizzie’s independence and putting her happiness first.

The whole story is condensed into roughly 96 pages which is a feat within itself, and the writer did a great job at picking out the most important events and information, but they sometimes cut the chapter off at very random intervals e.g. in the middle of a conversation. Some of the more famous quips and jokes are thrown in word-for-word but they aren’t really contextualized for kids aside from the famous “tolerable” line: “Tolerable wasn’t a compliment!”

The illustrations are all also very obviously based on the actors in the 2005 film adaptation, except for Lizzie who is the image of Jennifer Ehle in 1995.

There’s really nothing original about this. It will be part of a collection and each book is adapted by a different author, I thought therefore each author would put their own spin on the story for kids but they’re literally just shavings of the original story with some unoriginal pictures.

An Austen range for kids with illustrations, to introduce them to classic literature, is a great concept and I remember reading something similar in the 90s except with Shakespeare (illustrated by the illustrious Quentin Blake) and I loved them. I could pick 5 freelance illustrators from Instagram right now who would do a breathtaking job, but perhaps the publishers wanted to do a cheap job because that’s what this feels like.

I know this reads like a strange hit job on an easy target, but I just think there’s so much wasted potential and I’d love to have been able to give this to my eldest niece when it was published this year.

My 9 year old daughter really enjoyed this, the story has been adapted perfectly for the younger audience. It held my daughters attention well, and as a short book she finished it quickly. I will be purchasing more from this adaptation series.

I didn't expect to love this at all. I'm actually shocked at the complexity of this story and the depth of these characters. I'm late in writing this review but you can expect an update on it soon because I've already started my reread <3

I’ve never usually gone for the classics let alone Jane Austen, but oh my god MR DARCY I wish I could marry him.

I loved every moment of the book!

No child is too young to meet Jane Austen and her masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice. It is a fashionable way to introduce your child to the world of classic literature.

The story basically revolves around Lizzie Bennet, the second daughter of Mr And Mrs Bennet . The Bennets have no son, and in those days, property could only go to males. So, if one of their daughters did not get married to the designated heir, their house would go to their closest male relative, and the girls would be left homeless. The whole story is about the girls trying to find husbands, and features lots of balls, crazy proposals and the rolling hills of England.

I think the plot is very witty and amusing, and it is an interesting insight into what women’s life was like at the time. Equally, I love the wonderful and spirited Lizzie Bennett, with her wit and humour. Also, I like the way the Bennett’s are portrayed, and the way Mrs Bennett is obsessed with marrying the daughters off, and how Mr Bennett and the daughters put up with it.

Pride and Prejudice was the first classic I ever read, and I absolutely loved it. If you're not too big on classics, try this book, and believe me, it will change your opinion.

This is a fun children's book with adorable illustrations and is also fit for adults who want to know what pride and prejudice was about but are too lazy to read the whole story.
The book itself is super short and precise to the point of giving you exact information that you'll need and not much more. This could be great to read with your children to let them dip their toes into a favourite classic of many people.
***I got this as an arc from Net Galley for an honest review.

This was a very quick read, which is great for young readers and a great introduction to Jane Austen. However, I struggled connecting with the characters, which made it hard to follow the storyline.

It's a cute book that perfecly adapted the main storyline of Pride and Prejudice. It's nice to see a children's version of this oh-so-famous story. I love how nothing feels changed in the adaption, but it has just been made shorter. The parts with all the thoughts and whereabouts of Lizzy have been skipped (even though I did miss them as an adult reader), but that is perfect for kids. I even think now and then the story is still a bit difficult to understand sometimes. All names are, of course, only last names and children are definitely not used to that. Besides that, I loved to read a quick version of the story I love so much!

It did feel as if we rushed through the story. There could have been a bit more attention to the timeline, as it feels now that everyone marries just like Snow White: marry the man who kisses you awake without knowing each other. There is also the thing of the mother being so blindfolded about her only goal in life: her doughters getting married. Especially in this time, I think the attention should go even a bit more into 'marrying is not the only important thing'. I would have like to see that a bit more, but on the other hand: this way stayed true to the original story.

All said: it is a nice adaptation for somewhat older children and the drawings really help to keep the story understandable, plus they are the cutest! Oh and almost forgot: I totally fell in love with the cover!

This is a part of Jane Austen’s illustrated children’s books collection by Sweet Cherry Publishing and other than Pride and Prejudice, it includes seven more books all of which include audiobooks.

Even though I don’t usually read children’s books, I enjoyed this one a lot. It was such a cute story with beautiful illustrations and a very important message that we have to send to our children: money and fame is not important, love is.

I’ve never actually read Pride and Prejudice because I’m not a big fan of classics. They are just not for me and I’m always scared they will bore me. But this was a great prelude to the original book because it delivers short, fun and whimsical introduction to the classic so I might even pick up the original book at some point.

It is definitely written for older children because of a bit more complex language and the nature of the whole plot.

The story is an interesting one. Of a mother who wants to marry her daughters of to rich and successful men, even though they are not all as they seem and it doesn’t matter if her daughter’s don’t love them. But Elizabeth won’t hear of it, she doesn’t care for their money, only for their respect and love.

I think it’s important for young girls to know what’s important in life, it’s not only marrying rich (as many parents still teach young people in my country), because you need to find someone whose mind you can love in as well. Also, becoming successful yourself is far more important than marrying someone of that sort. So be smart, stay in school and fight for what you want!

Once my niece is older I will definitely buy her this. It’s a really interesting story and definitely educational.

I read this with my daughters, it was a lovely way to introduce them to the classics and I know they both really enjoyed it and my 9 year old read it again herself.
It was lovely to get their take on it, it was fresh and engaging.

Thank you Sweet Cherry Publishing and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.

This retelling of Jane Austen is short, but sweet. It contains everything you need to know about the Pride and Prejudice classic, perfect for children. The drawings gave a sweet addition to the book.

At this point, my love for Jane Austen is well-known. I will read any retelling there is. I have reviewed a ton of them already, including two of my favorites: Pride by Ibi Zoboi and Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev.

But while those are YA and adult romance, respectively, this is a children's book! And it's utterly delightful! Alright, let get to the review!

As the synopsis pretty much sums up the story and this book is old enough that quite a few people know at least some part of it, I'm not going to do a whole explanation of the story. Let's just talk how cute this shit is!

It's super cute! The illustrations are in black and white and really well-done. Darcy looks like the 2005-version of Darcy, but other than that, most of the characters are completely original in how they're drawn. All the Bennet women, including Mrs. Bennet, look gorgeous and I really appreciate Mary not being portrayed as a dull spinster.

ALSO:

Darcy and Lizzie's angry faces are perfection!

No lie: Wickham looks like a blockhead hahahahahaha. I died.

Mr. Collins is way too good-looking for his character, but I get it. It's for kids. Let's not scare them with a depiction of a greasy creeper.

Not every scene has a picture, but both the Darcy letter and both notes sent during the Lydia debacle are written out which I LOVE. The Darcy letter is one of the most important parts of the story so I'm glad the author gave it it's own illustration.

The story is simplified as the original might be too much for younger kids (some of the language in the original is confusing to me), but that doesn't take away from the story at all.

This version does give Bingley only one sister, but this isn't the first adaptation to do that. And lord knows Caroline Bingley does not need an ally to be an awful human.

Other than that, I don't think there are many changes. I really liked that they kept in the part about Georgiana and Wickham as well why Lydia running away was so bad. It's just done in a way that's appropriate for kids.

The Easy Classics edition of Pride and Prejudice is great for kids (it says 7-9 years old), but it's good for any Austen enthusiast/addict too. It also doesn't hurt that the cover is ridiculously pretty. Bookstagram people! Do what you do best!

I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars.

Easy Classics' Pride and Prejudice by Gemma Barder and Jane Austen comes out September 29, 2020

My kids have lately been questioning my favourite authors and I've told them plenty about Jane Austen so this book was right up our alley. This illustrations are sweet and whimsical, the story is light enough for my children to easily understand, and it was well adapted overall (in a very simplistic way, of course). Loved it and can't wait to read them the true classic later on.
