I have been waiting for years for the right time to share Jane Austen with my daughter, and this wonderful book has provided me with that opportunity much earlier than I anticipated! The author has cleverly condensed all of the pertinent plot points of the well-known story of Pride and Prejudice into a thoroughly readable and digestible story for children. The pacing and language were spot on for my daughter, and I will certainly be looking out for more titles from the “Jane Austen Children's Stories” series. My one very slight gripe is that the author seems to have used the 2005 movie as her source material, rather than the original Jane Austen text. Some of the dialogue is taken straight from the film, and the illustrations (charming as they are) bear more than a passing resemblance to Kiera Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen and co. This, however, in no way impeded my daughter’s enjoyment of the tale, so is perhaps not as important to non-purists! My thanks to the author, NetGalley, and the publisher for the arc to review. |

Love the cover and the pictures inside. Great depiction of Elizabeth. A good book to get a child to read one of Jane Austen's greatest novel. It is modified (shortened) enough so that the main points are in the story and it will the child engaged. The only thing I wish to change is the placement of some pictures (Since two pictures will not fit in one page, they could just show a picture and the narrative/description). So itwon't be confusing to the child who might also be following the picture and connecting it with the story/character. I recieved a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review. |

An adaptation of the Austen classic meant for younger readers. The text is very readable and approachable for those who might be familiar with the story and find this version easier to grasp. The pace of the story was quick and most all of the main plot points were included making it a good condensed version. |
Cute retelling of this classic love story. If you're a Jane Austen fan and want to pass the stories on to your kids, this would be a great place to start. |

These books never disappoint. I love anything Jane Austen and I'm glad I can teach my children early on about her. Would definitely recommend! |
This book was great! It was so easy to lose yourself in the story, and kept you turning pages to see what happened next! Will definitely be recommending! |

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This timeless story needs no introduction so I'll jump straight to speaking to this adaptation. I really feel the author did a great job and I would definitely buy this for my kids when they're old enough. The illustrations are great (very modern) and she does a good job of retelling the story for a target audience. I only have a few criticisms. I feel in some ways, the language was too simplified. Some complexity of language is good for kids. I noticed this mostly when memorable quotes had been slightly adapted. In those cases, I felt the original quote would have been fine. This isn't a huge issue, just something I noticed at various points. It in no way takes away from the story. I did think that the characters of the mother and Mr. Collins did not quite get developed enough. They are two of the most humorous parts of Pride and Prejudice. In this edition, you don't quite grasp how embarrassing Mrs. Bennett is at times, nor do you see how much of a goose Mr. Collins is. No matter what, I think when younger ones read P&P or any Jane Austen, someone needs to be there to explain to them issues present like class separations as well as why the girls couldn't inherit the estate. Overall, I very much enjoyed a quick version of my favorite story and I though a very difficult task was very well done. |
I was so excited to get this ARC! This book would be perfect for any Austen beginner. It was the same plot as Pride and Prejudice but an abridged version. I know Austen fans live to share their love of the stories and characters and if I had a daughter or a young friend in elementary school this would be the perfect gift. The vocabulary isn't changed very much so it still reads like a true Austen novel. This book also gives what is implied. I think everyone should read Pride and Prejudice, but some of the nuances might be hard to pick up by a younger reader so this helps out. This book comes out later this year and would be the perfect Christmas gift for a young reader! |

As a teacher of students with reading disabilities, I was excited to find this adapted version of the classic. I can see students enjoying the story written on a level that they can read themselves. The content is more advanced than the reading level, so it would be for middle to high school students. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this adaptation. |
✨ 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 ✨ “A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.” This absolutely 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 children’s adaptation of 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 & 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘦 by Gemma Barder is such a fun read for fans of the classic novel, and maybe a nice introduction for those who are intimidated by the classics! Who knew 𝘗&𝘗 could be condensed into a 15 minute read and still convey all of the important elements? Even on my 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞, the illustrations come off beautifully! The 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 are as gorgeous as ever! Thank you so much to @netgalley and @sweetcherrypublishing for my free digital copy in exchange for an honest review! Be sure to snag this one along with the other Austen classics on pub day, coming July 2020! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #readstagram #instabook #bookstagram #readersofig #instablogger #bibliophile #bookblogger #bookiehelper #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #bookstagrammer #bookaddict #literature #bookfeatures #floridareading Will post 5/27 |
Gemma Barder’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was fantastic. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite novel: I have read Pride and Prejudice so many times I have lost count. I always look forward to new adaptations and editions of this book, and this one was no exception! I loved it. I have so many different editions of Pride and Prejudice but this is one of my new favorites! I thought that the illustrations were very cute and would add helpful visualizations for younger readers. Pride and Prejudice is a very long book and this was a great condensed version: all of the major plot points were hit, making this a really accurate adaptation. Overall this is a wonderful version of a classic that anyone could enjoy! |
I love Pride and Prejudice, so I jump at any sort of adaptation whether it's a kids' shortened story or an adult re-make. I enjoyed this book, but thought some of the plot lines (specifically the marriage issues) might confuse kids as written. |
Unlike most abridged versions of the classics, this wasn’t arid or tiresome. Whilst staying true to the original plot, it is lively enough to engage younger readers. I will be using this for guided reading sessions, and look forward to reading others in the series. |

I really enjoyed this children's edition of Pride & Prejudice. This is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the literary works of Jane Austen. |
Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for an advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review! Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite novels, so I was so excited to get the chance to read this adapted version. The story and illustrations were well done and suited for young readers. However, there were some details that (understandably) had to be left out in this shortened, simplified version that I think could make the story confusing for readers. Overall, I enjoyed this and love that younger readers will get to experience this beautiful, classic story. |
What a delightful read I read P&P many times, even the comic verson from Marvel and I feel that this verson is great for chldrens.Maybe the Jane's plot happens to fast but that's all. The illustrations are great too. |
I must say that Sweet Cherry Publishing has done a fantastic job abridging, summarizing and simplifying Jane Austen's version of Pride and Prejudice for children. I loved the idea behind this book. Getting children acquainted with classic authors of all different eras to create appreciation of literature of classics without scaring them of heavy prose and linguistics is wonderful. This was a lovely rendition of one of Jane Austen's most beloved Classics and I cannot see any child not falling in love with literature after reading it. Wonderfully simplified with adorable illustrations it's an excellent start into the excellent world of classics. I would like to thank Gemma Barder (Jane Austen), Sweet Cherry Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. |
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers. This is a beautifully child friendly, condensed version of Pride and Prejudice for children to read and will definitely make many young readers fall in love with Jane Austen. The drawings in the book were simple but charming and the chapters are short and well scripted. I really look forward to reading more of these books in the future. |
This book is amazing. I loved the simple, short sentences. The illustrations are brilliant, though I wish they were coloured instead of black and white. It is perfect to introduce classics to the little ones, imbibing in them the love for the classics. Definitely picking this and the others in the set of books for my little one. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! |
I love reading various editions of classic books. This edition of Pride and Prejudice by Sweet Cherry Publishing was enjoyable and a great introduction into classic literature and Jane Austen. I found this edition was very clear on naming characters and describing them for a young reader. On top of that the book is full of illustrations, of both characters and scenes. The pictures are important as this edition describes more personalities, actions, and writing. This allows the illustrations to fill in the descriptions. I love the colourful and fun cover art as well. I have read Pride and Prejudice several times, so I did try to read this as if I knew nothing and was experiencing it for the first time. I did come across a few critiques I would recommend. One issue I did find throughout the book was sometimes I felt important characters were mentioned once and not again. So sometimes when they are mentioned I feel a little bit more on that character would be nice or to add them into another scene or two where you can. I also found transitions lacked at times. For instance, Mr. Bennett is out looking for Lydia and then all of a sudden, he is at his home receiving letters about the situation. Also, mentioning how much time has passed between some chapters would be super helpful. I find a little more detail throughout the book would not be bad for a young reader and would make it clearer for them. I think this is a great introduction to Austen for a young reader, and I believe it would get them excited to read the whole book when they are older. I feel there are some things that need to be changed to make it clearer for a reader who is new to the story. Now, if that young reader is reading it with a parent who knows the story and can answer questions, if the kid asks, I think it is fine. I received an electronic Advanced Reader Copy from Sweet Cherry Publishing through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own. |
