My first thought on diving into the excerpt was seeing that the final Part is listed as starting on p. 231 and I experienced a sudden feeling of disappointment. This is Susanna Clarke after all, I want it to be 3000 pages long, come on!

But anyway, this is immersive from the outset. It has that same intellectual and precise language as JS&MrN and that same... unwillingness to explain itself. If you want to know, you just have to keep going and I get the feeling this book will be completely worth it. I so very much want to know what is going on.

My thanks to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the excerpt** to read and obsess over and make me all the more excited about the book eventually coming out.

** someone, please correct that in the file name, 'exceprt' is just making me sad here

Excerpt Review:

Piranesi has been on my TBR list from the moment I heard about it. I read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell four years ago and it immediately jumped to place on my top five favorite books of all time. I preordered a hardcover copy for myself months ago. So far, this short excerpt has me entranced and I look forward to reading the full novel.

While less experimental in form than Mark Danielewski’s doorstopper House of Leaves, I suspect fans of that book will enjoy the labyrinthine house of Piranesi. Fans of the horror podcast Mabel are likely to be similarly entranced.

My Goodreads account has a shelf labeled “Places with Character,” so it may come as no surprise that I have a weak spot for stories where houses, cities, or landscapes serve as a character in their own right. Piranesi looks as though it will fit that bill perfectly.

I am a little lost, but can't wait to have the complete work and dive in. Promising to be dark, gothic, mind boggling, suppose some substance abuse /purely my speculation/

As a huge fan of Susanna Clarke I just had to check out Piranesi, and dived into the excerpt provided by Netgally as soon as I could.

It is, as her previous book (Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell), a bit confusing and has a lot of information and descriptions in the beginning, but you fall in love with the mystery and the characters real fast. It took me less than 36 pages.

I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

Thanks to Netgalley for the sample of this book. It has started out great. Cannot wait to read the full book.

I'm not sure I really knew what to expect from Susanna Clarke's new book, after the success of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but whatever I was expecting was blown out of the water by this sample! It was totally disorientating and intriguing at the same time, perfectly paced and well-written too. I'm sure the finished novel will make me want to keep turning the pages in the same way as I did here, eager to soak up more about this very unique house and its slightly odd inhabitants. I thought I was excited for this book before... now I can't wait to read it in its entirety.

I absolutely loved the previous works by this author and from this excerpt of her newest I am already excited to fall in love with another one of her works. I am really intrigued by the plot and the characters. I really like her writing style and can't wait to read the full and completed version of this!

Soooooo let's start with the fact that I've never read any of Susanna Clarke's work... but WOW am I intrigued or what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!

Even though I only had the opportunity to read an excerpt of this book I can already tell that Susanna Clarke's imagination is absolutely astounding. This labyrinth like mansion she creates is beyond creative- it's quite sensational. She's also incredibly clever in naming the book and its character- clearly there is much more to this book than meets the eye. It's going to be a fast-paced work of art that sucks you in and spits you out wanting more.

Highly recommend and added the book to my TBR!!!

Thank you to the publisher for providing this excerpt in exchange for an honest review.

I was immediately drawn in by even this tiny, tantalizing glimpse of Susanna Clarke's first book in a decade. Given that context, it's virtually impossible not to compare even 26 pages to Jonathan Strange and Mr, Norrell, Clarke's first, much-loved magio-historical novel, but Piranesi not only lives up to the comparison, it avoids feeling in any way like a retread. The titular Piranesi, writing deliberate, scientifically-minded journal entries, cataloging the halls and tides and statues of his labyrinthine House/World, is an intriguing character from his own first formal, careful lines. The otherworldly nature of the eerie House and its primary (though not only) inhabitant slam up against touches, bare hints in this brief excerpt, of another, more familiar, reality, all of which leaves me intrigued and incredibly eager to read the book in its entirety in just a few months, and to unravel all the secrets of Piranesi and the House.

This excerpt was enjoyable, but as excerpt's always are, far too short. Nevertheless, a fantastic introduction to what I'm sure will be a brilliant read. Now to wait for publication...

Well, the excerpt is quite short and doesn't really give a ton of information about what's going on. I'm definitely still interested in reading this book, but I don't really know how to rate this properly since it's just the first few pages as opposed to an excerpt that helps to set the scene of the book.

I enjoyed the excerpt, and I've requested the entire novel from Edelweiss because it is simply cruel to give me a peek into this book and then make me wait for the book release!

I can’t review this title because it’s just a sample, but what I read so far is AMAZING. Can’t wait for the whole book!!

The less than 40 pages I was able to read of this magnificent novel were more then enough to reassure me that Susanna Clarke had not lost her world building skills over the decades (ok it wasn't decades, but it felt like it) since we've last had the joy of reading her works. Though to be honest I really didn't need reassurance. I am eagerly awaiting this one, and will write a full review if able to secure a copy before publication! We are in for a treat, well worth the wait!

This excerpt of Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is pretty intriguing, but felt a little dry in the delivery. The book is told in journal entries, but they often seemed more monotonous and purely a daily list of things that happened, rather than a driving, moving plotline. Maybe the action starts right where this excerpt ends, but from what I read, it just didn't pull me in. Also, the major Places and Things are Capitalized in a strange, distracting way.

I realize I'm in the minority with this opinion, and maybe this book is just too far out of my usual genre. It is very original and some of the descriptions of place are mesmerizing. It didn't hook me, so I don't think I'd dive into the full book, but maybe it'll be the perfect one for you. Give it a try!

This excerpt is very promising! I am definitely intrigued to read the rest of the book. I did feel kind of confused at times but I got the feeling that it was supposed to be outlandish in that sense so I think it worked very well. Can’t wait to read more!

So based on the excerpt, this book seems to promise a lot! The writing had me a bit confused at points but the atmosphere and themes it seems to explore were very much to my taste.Indeed, I got the Nail Gaiman vibe. It made me very curious about the book and I will be bearing it in mind in my future shopping moments
