I loved this book! One of the reasons that I was interested in it is precisely because my grandson's name is Dylan, and he is also a bilingual child. This book celebrates language -- and centers a trilingual boy who speaks Portuguese to his father, Ukranian to his mother and English to his friend, who is a little girl who is also bilingual in English and Swahili. Due to his ability to speak Portuguese, Dylan is able to find his lost chicken (who also speaks "Chickenese." The children in this book affirm and embrace their languages and also introduce the word "polyglot" to their audience, (never too early to teach this important word and concept). The book also features a moment in which Dylan cries, which normalizes this often very gendered expression of emotion.

I had an absolutely wonderful time reading this one! But Chickenese? haha that was stretching it a bit too far.
Nonetheless, I loved the message of the book too - the celebration of our differences and the celebration of staying together not despite, but because of these differences. Lovely book, lovely story!

Dylan's Birthday Present is a cute story that introduces different languages to children and indirectly shows the importances of knowing multiple languages. They use the term "polyglot" to describe someone that speaks multiple languages. Dylan speaks Ukranian, Portuguese and English and he decides he wants a chicken for his birthday.
He gets the chicken and is very excited. However, when hanging out with his friend, the chicken wanders away. They can't find the chicken, but eventually they realize it wandered to someone's house. However, the man at the house only speaks Portuguese. Thankfully Dylan can speak multiple languages and can communicate with the man to get his chicken back. The man has a shirt that reads "Friends are worth more than gold" and Dylan is happy that he has a friend and a chicken as a friend.
The book is cute, the story is cute and I would recommend this book to read to any younger kids.

This was an adorable childrens book! I loved the illustrations, and of course I'm on board with Dylan asking for a chicken for his birthday present! I would definitely recommend . Thank you netgalley for giving me the chance to read and review this book

This was the very first book I've ever read that has a QR code to help you with pronunciation! The beautiful illustrations had my attention from the cover - gorgeous drawings!! I'm an animal lover - so when Dylan asked for a CHICKEN for his birthday and his dad said YES - I was fully invested. It's not just a story about a kid getting a chicken for his birthday - it's educational - I even learned something new from this book - I now know what a polyglot is, and how to pronounce a tiny handful of words in other languages! What a gem for young readers!! In exchange for a honest review, I received a digital copy of Dylan's Birthday Present - and I loved it!!! I realized that this is the first in a new series and can't wait to see where we go next!

*thank you Netgally and the author for the gifted copy*

This was a cute story. It is fantastic that they showed different languages as well. I did find the non-English words were very difficult to read in the font color. I found I had to squint.

The relationship between Dylan and Emma was really great, she was extremely supportive.

Dylan has a superpower of being a polyglot. This story had a great message of positivity towards multiculturalism and multilingualism. Great way to share words/phrases in different languages.

I like the idea of this story, but something about it just didn't come together for me. I am not sure if my students would enjoy it.

I received an electronic copy from Linguacious through NetGalley.
Delightful book that shares the concept of people speaking their own languages as well as speaking several themselves. Dylan's family speaks Ukrainian, Portuguese and English. His friend, Emma, speaks Zulu and English. Readers see several words in different languages with translations provided in footnotes.
Dylan asks for a chicken as his birthday present and he and Emma take it to the park. They lose the chicken, but Dylan is able to locate it as he speaks a different language and can communicate with the person who found it.
The illustrations support the text, and the message of inclusion and diversity is clear.
I also appreciate the link to audio files so readers can hear how the words are pronounced in the various languages.

A cute book to read as for adults and kids . I read it with my 8-year old sister ; and she loved it ! ( We agreed on not giving it 5 stars aka she forced me to give it 4 stars because she wanted to read the second book asap ! ) And an important thing to to take out of this book is how diverse it is and how it will help kids learn about many cultures.

Super cute book, very unique! Dylan takes advantage of his birthday wish and chooses a pet as his present. As he takes his new pet on a birthday adventure with his friend, Kiki, he is able to use his "superhero" power of being a polyglot. This book would be perfect to introduce young children to multiple new languages. The illustrations are colorful, fun, and simple.

This was really cute and informative. I love that he asked for a pet chicken. I loved that he had a friend from South Africa.
My brother speaks English and German. His wife speaks Czech, German and English. They are teaching their kids all the languages they speak and it's cool to see and hear.
