I really enjoyed this book. I loved that it was two girls surviving by themselves. I loved the way that the story dealt with Vivi's flashbacks. I loved the art style. I loved the story in general! This was such a great graphic novel about friendship, zombies, and dealing with your past trauma. If you are a fan of zombie graphic novels then I think this one will be right up your alley!

Will I ever stop crying over this book? Haunting, sad, and straight to the heart, this graphic novel will horrify and tug your heartstrings in equal measure. A compelling story, with characters you wish you could save from the pages.

There felt like a lot of promise initially, but I was confused most of the time. It took quite a few times for me to get through this and because I wasn't into it it felt like it went on forever. I will say that the artwork was great. I think this may have been the case of the "it's not you, it's me."

Thank you Lerner Publishing Group for this eARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ever after by Olivia Vieweg is set in an apocalyptic setting where plague has been turning humans to the undead.

This graphic novel will give you creepy vibes and if you're a zombie stories lover this is definitely a great choice. I really enjoyed reading it but zombie thingy isn't my taste so I didn't really loved reading it. The illustrations were really amazing. A perfect read during fall. Loved the characters and their friendship. Definitely a spooky book!

But i feel like there was something lacking in the world and story so it made be lower my rating. But overall a nice read.

TWs: graphic violence & attempted suicide

Quick shout out b/c the book does provide content warnings, which is amazing! (Esp. because they are certainly needed for this graphic novel)

First thoughts: Interesting plot, curious to see how it goes. I am worried because almost all of the top Goodreads reviews are negative and low rated, with mentions of it being boring and perhaps a bit too scary. Also, this was originally published in German and I saw some comments about translation issues.

Okay so I was hesitant going into this graphic novel because of the Goodreads reviews, and it didn't help that from the beginning I didn't prefer the art; it is different from the cover art (which was frustrating, because what's the point?) and the art style is drawing rather than the typical graphic art (digital) that most graphic novels use, at least from what I've read.

Overall, the story was very confusing. The main character, Vivi, lives in a mental hospital after being found alone at the beginning of the apocalypse after feeling responsible for her sister's death. This causes for confusion when she hallucinates, and I wasn't sure for a while what was real and what was her hallucinations because they blended together.

Most of the plot for me didn't make sense. Things just randomly happened. And the part where Vivi was with the half dead lady that for some reason didn't try to kill her? I was confused for sure. Also, there really was no ending. Really not sure what happened.

I actually LOVED a few of the panels in the end b/c the art with Vivi looking like a badass with her pink hair pulled up and her eye bandaged up, she looked really cool; and the panels with Eva and Vivi were especially amazing. BUT, those didn't come until they last few pages and were paired with a non-ending.

Overall, this graphic novel was fine, and other than the overall idea of the story, nothing stood out to me. I also didn't find the zombies or violence to be too terrifying, but this type of thing doesn't usually scare me.

Rating: 3 stars

You ever finish reading a book and wonder what the heck you just read? Ever After by Olivia Vieweg had that effect on me. I understood much of what was going on--except for what I didn't. It felt like reading a scary dream. There were zombies, which aren't my favorite, and two girls with tragic backstories and emotional baggage trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The art was colorful and dramatic and often beautiful. It was action filled, but at the same time, at least for me, very difficult to follow the story line, and challenging even to tell Vivi and Eva, the two protagonists, apart. Which really should not have been difficult. Vivi has dyed pink hair. Eva has brown hair. and yet somehow the art made them difficult to tell apart. At least for me. It had some of the same feel as many of the manga I've read, with frantic, jumpy action, overly dramatic depictions of emotions/ reactions, and lots of facts and explanations either implied or left unstated entirely. I honestly don't know why the story ended like it did, or what that ending will mean for the characters. I also don't know if perhaps the story suffered from being translated into English, and if somehow in the original German the story felt more coherent.

I did appreciate that this is a story about two girls. There's no romance and few male characters. The girls have agency, or at least develop it over the course of the story. The German setting adds a little to the story, with walled towns adding a new dimension to the journey through apocalyptic zombie territory. There's little diversity; every character I can remember is white, which I don't love. There is representation of mental health issues, however, and I especially appreciated that there are related content warnings offered at the beginning of the book.

So for all that many individual panels were lovely art on their own, I ended up not loving this graphic novel, and would probably not seek out more by the author. I don't think her writing and artistic style work for me. Readers more inclined to the narrative style of some manga may find the story and characters easier to follow. it also helps with your enjoyment if you don't mind zombies and apocalyptic worlds and gory violence.

I liked this book a lot even though is not like the other I usually read.
Hope to see more and better work of this author.

I liked the play on the zombie genre but was a little mixed on how light the characters were, the lettering, and some of the zombie elements. I also found myself mixing up the two main characters during some mid-book conversation scenes.

Ever After was a nice story with a beautiful ending, but unfortunately nothing more. I read a lot of comics, and this was just ok. I really like drawing in it and the relation between Vivi and Eva, but I think that it could be something extraordinary, but now is only ordinary.

Incredibly simplistic in language but the imagery carried the plot and emotions that the really brief dialog did not. I do not usually read zombie stories but this one had an intriguing cover and a shockingly hopeful tone through the young protagonist.

A HUGE thanks to Lerner Publishing Group, Olivia Vieweg and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book. This is an honest review, all opinions are my own.

I did quite enjoy the artwork and the basic story line in this plot- seemed fairly straightforward for a zombie novel. The one thing that kept me from giving it the full 5 stars was that I felt like a lot was missing in translation, this was originally in German. Not to say that it was bad by any means, but it really felt lacking in some parts where I could tell it would've been stronger in its native language.

The artwork was beautiful, I loved the colors and the style and that's a huge reason for 2 of the 3 stars. I love the style so much and that alone had me wanting to read more.

Would still recommend this as a quick zombie read for anyone looking for some new zombie graphic novels. This wasn't quite as graphic as The Walking Dead, being that it's YA, but it does have some graphic moments,

I want to start this by saying that the artwork in this was beautiful. I also know that this book was translated into English from German I believe, so I think maybe that was why I struggled with the nuance of some of the dialogue. That being said I think the story had potential to be great but maybe due to me not really following the story, it was lackluster for me.

I was drawn to the art in the cover but the style wasn’t consistent throughout the story. This is just a personal preference, however.
There wasn’t enough worldbuilding. What caused the zombies? How are the weeds important? I had a lot of questions and no answers.
While the characters had complex issues, I still didn’t connect to them and didn’t really care what happened to them.
While I wanted to love this book, the lack of detail just didn’t work for me. Sadly, I won’t be picking up the next volume.

As amazing as Ever After sounded, I found the delivery to be lacking. Now, I do not think the author is at fault really, outside of not having any backstory on the zombie outbreak, I think the translation has lost something pivotal. The artwork is stylized and gripping, but with the quick pace of the story and translation issues I found my mind wandering off of the characters and focusing more on what I felt confused about. Also, trigger warning to the young adults who may need it, there is attempted suicide depicted. All in all, I found Ever After to be an interesting take on the Zombie narrative, but I wish the translation had been up to snuff.

Although the art was beautiful, unfortunately "Ever After" wasn't a graphic novel for me.

"Ever After" is about those two girls who run away from their city during a zombie apocalypse, each for their own reasons, and end up banding together to survive it. While the premise sounds pretty cool, and I always like to read spooky stories for this time of year, I felt like there was a lack of point to the plot.

It also left me with much more questions than answers (as it seemed it only gave half-answers anyway) at the end. I don't mind open-ended endings or anything like that, but I wished we at least got some answers about the zombie apocalypse and what made this particular apocalypse so unique, especially when the book says outright this is a different zombie apocalypse.

In the end, what saved this graphic novel for me was the art. It was beautiful and gritty, and I particularly liked the color palette. It worked so well with the story, and certainly made a lackluster confusing plot seem so much better than it was.

Nonetheless, I think this is a good graphic novel if you like zombie apocalypse books, and/or if you would like to pick up a spooky graphic novel for this upcoming spooky season. But keep in mind there is a lot of gore and body horror in this book, as well as a suicide attempt.

In a post-apocalyptic world, two travelers are stranded when a train breaks down. The countryside is filled with the undead and these two must try to survive. Originally published in German.

Trigger warnings for graphic violence and attempted suicide are easily seen as soon as you start the book which I appreciate. The first page is absolutely breathtaking. The art is museum worthy. The zombies are all done in grey tones and the contrast between them and the bright colors of the backgrounds and kids really sets the tone of the book.

Normally I am not a fan of zombie stories, but this is so much more than that. It is a complex story that will definitely be a re-read on my list.

Ever After left me with a strange taste in my mouth. The story is a bit confusing at the beginning and some flashbacks took me off the road.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Germany, where the zombies are walking around looking for 'food', following two girls Vivi and Eva who are fighting to survive.

Not only the zombie trope is "dark" but - most of all - the mental health, depression and agony made the whole thing darker.

I think my favourite part about this graphic novel is the artwork. The colours are vibrant & the illustrations are just great. Maybe if the story had lasted longer, it would have been better. I couldn't really empathize with the characters. and I'd like to knew a little bit more about their background.

Well, what an insightful read. I loved the journey I took with the characters and the story made me really want to dive into the book and never come back. This is such a good book for anyone who misses the hunger games, divergent or just wants a good dystopian.

Ever After is haunting, gritty, and powerful. The art style is very interesting and at moments stunning, while at other hard to absorb. There was a lot I liked about Ever After. The storytelling jumped around and at times I found it difficult to follow, but overall I really liked the story. I enjoyed this fresh take on the zombie apocalypse. Thank you to Vieweg, Lerner Publishing Group, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read Ever After in exchange for an honest review.

3/5 stars

I enjoyed the art of this graphic novel a lot and the original concept was amazing. The art was colorful but also intense which I think was perfect for the story. The concept as I said was amazing but the execution of it kinda lost me. I don't necessarily think it was a problem with the storytelling but could have more to do with the translation. The circumstances of the zombie apocalypse was never really explained or the zombies themselves.

Some parts of the story surrounding the characters were also not really explained, especially the ending, which just made me confused. I think the pacing was also off because periods of time passed and there was nothing to signal how long it actually was and it really threw me off. The timeline just didn't sit right withe me. I enjoyed the story overall, but I was just confused on the ending and how the zombie apocalypse existed.
