Media Queen has been on my TBR list for several years at this point, and I can't seem to finish it. Sorry! I'm sure people will love it, but it just isn't for me!

Once again, a book with a social media theme that fits the social media crazed culture we all live in.

As always, I love a book that is relatable to the "times" and this one fit the bill. The character development was great, the storyline flowed well, however I felt that some of the book was "cliche" - but that goes along with the theme being a social media queen.

I felt like I was relating to teens today, which is always helpful!

I couldn't even finish this book. It felt very immature and not really relatable in anyway. The story seemed interesting at first but I just didn't feel compelled or attached to the characters and story in anyway.

i'm all for romance novels, and it took up a lot of my reading in 2020. but, this was just not the book for me. it was kind of confusing with the different time elements, which kind of sucked. and i also felt the main character to be kind of annoying, and just a pain in the ass for most of this book. thanks for the arc though.

Found the heroine unsympathetic and even though she was supposed to be this awful character, there was just no redeeming her for me and I thus didn't want to read her story. It's got good aspects about the media and building a magazine and all that, but the heroine is so horrid, the rest pales against it

This book was FUN! I did not know until about half way through that it was book 2 in a series, but I definitely didn't feel the need to read book 1 to understand book 2. I do want to go back and read book 1 for more of these characters. I really enjoyed them, in that way that you watch a car wreck but are also so happy that you're not apart of it.

I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.

I volunteered to read this book, through netgalley in exchange, for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. This book is entertaining. The characters are enjoyable and relatable. This book talks about friendship and hardworking people. I enjoyed how the main character Jordyn wants to be a journalist and to move to a big city from a small town. This ebook is stores now for $5.99 (USD).

My thoughts

Narrative and Plot

Media Queen is a glimpse at the life of Jordyn Fairweather, the fashion magazine editor. Jordyn begins her journey as an intern and climbs the ladders of the magazine industry to create her own website called, The Fairweather Report. Amidst several allegations, you get to know Jordyn’s version of the story.

The narrative is mainly through the eyes of Jordyn. She definitely holds our attention. But, the story takes its sweet time to amp things up in the begin and then it quickly jumps timelines. It takes some time to get into the story and care for Jordyn. Once you get there, the story abruptly shifts timeline and it gives you less time to care enough for the rest of the characters. Then again, this is the second book in the HollyAnna series. I haven’t read Goodbye Newsroom yet. Perhaps, reading it first, would give better insight to the characters.

Characters and Conflicts

Jordyn Fairweather is focused and driven. She is unapologetically loyal to her faults which she has in abundance. Jordyn is not exactly a likable character. But she redeems herself now and then just enough for you to care about her. For the most part, Jordyn is selfish, ungrateful, manipulative and admirably far sighted.

She is a whirlwind. The romance in the book seems adorable. Again the quick shifting in the timeline makes it a lukewarm experience. Jordyn may be flawed but she only has eyes for her career. She leaves no stone unturned to make things happen. Eventually it leads to her downfall, when Jordyn meets another young career driven woman.

The shift from print to digital was done smoothly reminding you how much has changed in a short span of time.

Conclusion

Overall, Media Queen is a fun one time read if you like the inside workings of magazines and content creation, in general. It is a hyperbole, and the drama could have been culminated in some grand manner. Interestingly, the story just chooses to forge forward as if to emphasize “the show must go on” motto.

I received this as an ARC from Netgalley. This was a quick, fun read that was somewhat juvenile for being an adult book.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had a hard time reading this one. The first half was great and entertaining, but the second one wasn’t great for me. I started it expecting to read a lot about the scandal of Jordyn not paying the freelance writers, but as opposed to what i expected, that barely had any relevance in the story. It was kind of important in the last 20 pages but that was it.
The first half was nice, fresh, worthy of a teenager story, i was really into the book, but then, as Jordyn kept growing up, i found myself reading about her making the same bloody mistakes over and over, i reached a point in which i couldn’t stand reading about her and preferred to read about what was going on with everyone else in the story.
Jordyn’s character during the first half of the book was lovely, hard working and work focused, on the second half, she became obsessed with work, manipulative and the worst friend you can imagine.
The writing style was great and i will read Goodbye newsroom (the first book in the serie) and hope to enjoy it!

I really liked this book! I loved what a fierce character Jordyn was, I wish the ending wasn’t as abrupt and we learned more about Jordyn feeling and learning what the impact of her actions were on her family and her former friends. Very interesting to read about the rise of social media and how quickly everything moves these days, and well written.

Media Queen by Michelle Prak

Nice quick easy to read book with a good storyline which I soon became absorbed in. Wish I had read book number 1 in the series but nevertheless this does not mean you cannot enjoy this as a stand-alone book.
After reading this book I will be reading the first one now. Bit back to front but hey ho enjoyed this book so why not.
Many thanks to both netgalley and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

This book was a quick, wonderful summer read. I loved all the characters in the story. You really became part of the book and wanted to know how everyone would turn out.

Jordyn Fairweather had a goal to work as a writer, and spent her entire life working towards it.
Starting as an intern at Australia’s Sixteen, then moving to a cadetship, and finally deputy editor, she’s achieved the job of her dreams. Luckily for her, her boyfriend Goody hangs on, and the two set off to live a new live in Sydney. Things continue to change as she climbs the corporate ladder leaving people and publications in the dust. Jordyn’s story of fame and fallout, friends and frenemies is one easily devoured and brought me a series I can’t wait to keep reading.
