DNF @ 42%. I hated the MC and didn't want to read her anymore. She was just too much of a snob and the townspeople were a little too much 'rubes'. This book really rubbed me the wrong way.

Dead Woman Crossing is the first novel in the series featuring the main character Detective Kimberly King, written by J.R. Adler. It was originally published on September 23rd, 2020 by Bookouture. I was able to read this book by obtaining an ARC by the publisher on NetGalley.
Detective King is haunted by New York. She realizes she needs to leave it because there is a serial killer that she was chased and never caught, and the father of her daughter decided to leave them by leaving their young daughter crying on the floor in the middle of the night without another word. Therefore, Detective King decides to move to Oklahoma to live with her mom and stepfather to have their help, and a promotion as a Deputy Sheriff in the small town, known to locals as Dead Woman Crossing due to the brutal murder of a young woman in 1905.
Because it is a small town, King thinks that she will actually be bored in her new job. That all changes when another mom who takes her daughter to the same daycare as her own child is brutally murdered on the beach, and her one-year-old daughter is the only witness. She can’t help but compare the case to the murder in 1905, and feels like everyone in the town is a suspect, even though Sheriff Walker is hesitant to think that way and wants to believe that only an outsider could be responsible.
While the information and reveal about the killer’s identity was a little predictable, the development of characters, their relationships, and the settings was very well done. I was still hooked to the story line and found myself constantly reading to reach the end of the novel. I must also admit that I am looking forward to the future of the series, and already downloaded the sequel, Last Day Alive on Kindle Unlimited, which I will post a review to in the future.
I give this book 4/5 stars. I would recommend it for fans of the mystery, thriller and suspense genre, but try to keep an open mind if you are not a fan of them in order to give this talented author a try.

Detective Kimberly King of the NYPD accepts a Chief Deputy and moves to tiny Dead Woman Crossing, Oklahoma, so named for its history of an unsolved murder so her baby daughter can get to know her grandmother. We also learn through flashbacks of her other reason for leaving New York. The book accurately portrays life in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Just as she starts to settle into her job the community is rocked by a murder that is a copy of the one for which the town is known. The characters believably portrayed citizens of a tiny town in the middle of nowhere where the patriarchy rules. I like Kimberly but I thought she came on a little too brusque to everyone and unappreciative to her mother and stepfather. I have never lived in a big city so perhaps this would be true of someone in her position. The Sheriff and the deputies and their police work seemed realistic, and Barb the receptionist is wonderful. Aside from the murder there is an underlying theme of spousal abuse that is handled well. The descriptions of the town and the endless fields of wheat were so realistic that this mountain girl felt exposed. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book. I hope there will be more books in this series.

while looking for something different to read, I stumbled across DEAD WOMAN CROSSING, I'm a sucker for reading the first book in a series, I will usually try them. I do believe I have found a new series to add to my TBR list(pile), JR Adler has done an excellent job of capturing the people and the atmosphere of a small Oklahoma town. I should know, I've lived in a few of them. The main character reminds me of so many people I know that she could be one of them. So, if you are looking for an interesting series with some meorable characters, you have found another author to add to your TBR list too.

I loved this! As the beginning of a series, I think this set of the characters and the storyline for a lot of growth and several directions to go. King is the badass heroine that, as a reader, you are hoping for! I can’t wait to read the next book!

While I found this book to be a bit of a slow starter, as I read further into the story, I realised that it set the mood perfectly and really gave us an insight into Kimberley and how she operates as a police officer, and as a mother.

I enjoyed meeting the characters who will hopefully feature more in this series. Sam seems like a wonderful person and a dedicated sheriff.

The story raced on after passing the half way mark, and the tension and excitement built up to an explosive conclusion.

All in all, a good read which sets the pace for a great series. Looking forward to reading book 2.

Detective Kimberly King thought the move to Oklahoma would be good for her and for her daughter. She didn't expect to find herself caught up in a cold case that bares secrets and lies in the small town of Dead Woman Crossing. She's a good character, the setting is well done, and the pacing in this procedural is such that you'll be turning the pages. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good start to a new series.

I love finding new crime thriller series and this is a great start to one. The story was filled with a lot of suspense and so many great twist and turns. I'm only negative thought was that it started off a little slow but once it picked up it was extremely hard to put this book down.

This book was fantastic. I love a good police procedural book. The main character Jessica was soo sassy, that I couldn’t get enough of her. Dead Woman Crossing starts off slow with family drama, but once the murder happens the story picks up. I finished the book in one sitting. I cannot wait until book 2 of this series. If you are a fan of police procedural books, I highly recommend picking up Dead Woman Crossing. I definitely plan to read more of J.R Alder books in the future.

The last few months have had me very into the murder mystery / thriller genre and so I was excited to pick up another detective book. A little slow on the uptake but definitely picks up speed do keep reading! I'm also a big fan of Detective Kimberley and thought it was a nice change of pace to have the plot take part in a different city than I'm used to reading about. I'm looking forward to the next book already!

What a fab new series! Dead Woman Crossing is one of the most promising series I've read this year. The characters in this book are strong & with all their flaws I found them to be very realistic & believable. Det. Kimberley King moved from a busy city to a sleepy town. The changes she sees both in her surroundings & the people made for very interesting reading. But what kept my attention till the very end was the case that broke her & literally haunts her. I sincerely hope that it's revisited in some more depth on the subsequent books. The plot was good & kept me guessing till the very end. However the reveal was not that jaw-droppingingly shocking as I'd hoped going by the momentum being built in the previous chapters. Nonetheless, I loved the book & hope I get to read the next one too!

Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture & J.R. Adler for an arc!

Dead woman crossing is the typical " big city cop moves to small rural town for a quieter life " story. Its marketed as a mystery thriller but the thriller aspect wasn't really there in my opinion.
The flashbacks to Kimberly's past added an interesting element to the story and helped to paint a picture of who Kimberly was and how past events has shaped her into the person she has become.
Overall I found the story to be slow with little action until the grand reveal at the end. I didn't find anything that made this book stand out from the rest but I also didn't dislike it. It was an easy read with a pleasant atmosphere, I was however hoping for more from the first book in a series.

Many thanks to bookouture and Netgalley for sending me copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

All thoughts and opinions are my own and are in no way influenced by the nature in in which I recieved this book .

A small town, secrets, and a killer on the loose. This was a great start to a new series. The writing was very atmospheric and transported me to this small Oklahoma town. I loved the characters especially Barbara.

In J.R. Adler's Dead Woman Crossing, the first installment in the Detective Kimberly King crime thriller series, this debut is awesome and twisted with every twisted turn to keep you in suspense. Kimberly King wanted a fresh start when she moved from NYC to Dead Woman Crossing, Oklahoma, with her baby daughter Jessica. In Dead Woman Crossing, this small town is aptly named for its first murder of a young pregnant woman who was decapitated and shot, a century ago. While she had gotten settled in her step-father's farm, she'd noticed changes in her mother's appearance and how aloof and cold her step-father had been to her when she first arrived. But things took a dark turn for the worse, when someone was found murdered the same way as DWC's first murder. Kimberly knew this person and had befriended her before her untimely death. To discover the truth behind this murder, she would have to dig deeper to find the answers and shake things up in that small town, even if all roads lead her close to home in a shocking ending.

Dead Woman Crossing is the first book in the Detective Kimberly King series. Kimberly is a former NYPD detective, an single mom, who relocates to a small town to take up the role of Chief Deputy in the Sheriff’s office. Soon after her arrival, Kimberly finds herself investigating a gruesome murder of a single mother with her one-year daughter as the only witness.

This was a fast-paced, well-plotted, suspenseful read. I liked Detective Kimberly and I love how she was introduced to readers. The author did such a wonderful job with setting the background and getting us invested in Kimberly and her move to Dead Woman Crossing. I also liked the small-town vibe although this yet another place I’d never want to move to lol.

This was an interesting case that was hard to crack due to the lack of evidence or any real suspects. I had a few guesses but I was dead wrong. The crime itself is one of the worst that I have ever encountered. I read a lot of books in this genre and have come across all types of baddies. However, the details of this murder make it one of the most gruesome and coldest one yet.

This is a great immersive, character-driven crime thriller with a great female lead and support characters. It also has an interesting setting and the perfect unpredictable, complex case. If you are looking for a new series to follow, I recommend this one.
