Such a sweet book. Great illustrations as well. I loved reading the author's note, it really helped put the book into perspective.

I am quite torn with this story. The first half is about 10 brothers who were considered a lucky group in Taiwan. Sons are golden and 10 was considered a miracle. Those 10 had a sister, who no one really paid any attention to, but who was always there listening, learning, and discovering that, just like her brothers, she had her own special talent. Now that sister has a little dumpling of her own who is hearing this story knowing that her mother started out in the shadows. I think that the abrupt ending put me off. There are little bits of fun, such as finding the sister in each spread of boys, but the book just left me feeling sad for the unnoticed little girl.

You might get shocked reading this, if you're not Asian or familiar with their culture. How could human being prized boys more than girls? It is not fair. But the Asian society is such, now changing, but still prized male over female. In some Asian culture, a family has to have a son. They could have 7 daughters but incomplete without a son.

So imagine 10 of them! The heir, and the spare, and more spares, in the medieval British history language. And somehow overlook the little girl born among them. Isn't she special? The only girls among boys! Even only to remind us gently that no matter what the gender of the offspring, we matters, be a girl or a boy.

The author’s father was from Taiwan and was one of 10 brothers. In Taiwan, a boy is considered to be good luck and ten boys would a mega good-luck. The author came to know that her father also had a sister and she was away from the limelight. The author tried to imagine how the sister might have felt when their whole little town gave importance only to the brothers.⠀

The story and the illustrations are simple and beautiful. After I read the whole book, I reread it because I missed the sister. This is a wonderful book to teach kids about diverse cultures and love between siblings.⠀

Don't be fooled by the cute cover! While it's definitely about 10 brothers in Taiwan, Ten Little Dumplings is more than just a cute picture book. This vital story shows that even when society places you in the background, whether for your race or gender or any other identity, your life can still be yours -- and worth a whole lot too. If you enjoyed books like Seven Silly Eaters, you will enjoy the cute scenes of all 10 boys doing everything together. This is such a sweet and surprising picture book, I absolutely loved it and would recommend.

This is a darling story written from such a unique and personal perspective. The illustrations were so fun and whimsical, and I loved searching for the little girl in the spreads.

An important encouraging story for girls (and boys) that each person is valuable and gifted!

Ten Little Dumplings was based on the author's father's family. Fan's father grew up in a family with ten sons in Taiwan. While the ten brothers are celebrated for their great accomplishments, their sister is also present but not discussed until later in the story. This captures the sentiment the author notes in her author's note that traditionally in Taiwanese culture sons are prized over daughters.

This book was darling in illustration and in its subtlety of pointing out that daughters should be cherished as much as sons. The artwork was wonderful and I loved the second half of the book that focused on the daughter's accomplishments. Fan notes in her author's note that discovering her father had a sister as well as nine brothers who she heard about endlessly left her wondering who gets left out of stories and why. This is such an important concept, and having it presented in a picture book is very impactful.

Combining minimal word structure with darling illustrations, Fan produces a picture book perfect for all ages. A lesson to be learned as well as an insight into another culture.

Larissa Fan’s retelling, inspired by her father’s family, of a Taiwanese folktale is a heartwarming reminder that not everyone’s stories are always heard. In Ten Little Dumplings, readers follow ten brothers as they bring light and luck everywhere they go. They grow up together, and even all go to university together. It’s no wonder—to have a son is auspicious, so to have ten sons suggests even greater fortune.

However, these ten sons, the story ultimately reveals, are not the only children in the family. They have a sister! And while you may not notice her at first, she was there all along if only you would look more closely.

What I love about this story is that while it unabashedly reminds us that not seeing the daughter, or any overlooked person, is distinctly correctable and avoidable, it does so without anger or resentment. The daughter also finds success; beside her brothers, she flourishes as an artist. Ten Little Dumplings reminds us to not let our expectations cloud our attention, but it does so by highlighting the daughter’s successes rather than any struggles she may have had due to her brothers’ acclaim. This is a beautiful story with a unique take on a perennial issue.

Ten little dumplings is the tale of a family with ten little boys. As is tradition with Asian culture, boys are considered lucky and so the brothers are the focus of everything. This story takes a turn as we realise the 10 brothers actually have a sister- shrouded in the background and learning and growing on her own. She eventually grows up, to have have her own beautiful family and loves and appreciates her own baby girl
Its a beautiful story that both shows traditional asian Culture and also shows breaking tradition.
It's simple and touching.
Illustrations have a traditional asian feel that go so perfectly with the story!

"Ten Little Dumplings" is a sweet story written by Larissa Fan, who based the story on her father's family. Her father grew up in Taiwan as one of 10 successful brothers. In Taiwan, sons are prized over girls, and to have 10 was considered very special. This author indicated she later found out there was also a sister who was often overlooked in this culture. She wanted to write a story with a twist to include the forgotten sister.

I like reading multi-cultural stories to children, and would certainly read this one. The pictures are beautiful, there is some vocabulary that might be difficult for younger children, but it is important for children to hear more advanced vocabulary in order to develop language skills. It might be difficult for children in our culture to understand the ideas that boys were prized above girls, but with the right explanation that all are special, most children will understand and enjoy the story.

i like it. I haven't read a picture book in a while even though I have some on my bookshelf. I think it has a fun little tist. I found myself searching for that extra someone on each page. I think it can be a great conversation starter for children.

Love the art and the story about finding your place as a girl even when your family or your culture only praises your brothers. Sweet and loved the ending and loved going back to see where she had been hiding in plain sight.

This story is a great read, albeit with a sad meaning behind it.
This is about a large family about 10 boys born in Taiwan, and because they are boys and there are so many, they are well known in the town and wherever they go.
Then it becomes known that the story is told from the sisters point of view, who seems to have been forgotten about.
Great story with cute illustrations

Free read through Netgalley.
Cute story about the girl that's forgotten about because the boys are so much more important in Asian culture. I don't know anything about the original dumplings tale, but it's still a good read. The illustrations are nice. Overall a good book.

"Ten Little Dumplings" is a unique book in terms of message delivery. Both messages are important and should be given to kids while they are growing up.

In the major part of the world, you will find fondness of having a boy child in the family. Though we are in the 21st century it is happening throughout the world. And many times a boy child gets more attention than a girl child, this disparity can hamper the development of a girl child. The story of the book shows the same, it first takes you through a happy family having 10 children all boys. It shows they were best, smart, and loved by all. And then a girl introduced herself and shows that she was also present among her brothers. She may not be as favored as her brothers but she didn't deter progressing. She learned and grew up successful.

So the second message of the story is to keep fighting odds and keep progressing despite the challenges life throws at you.

I simply loved the book. A perfect story for kids and it deserves 4.5 out of 5 for the same.

Take my money!! This book is ridiculously adorable. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous. Ten little boys in a family. Looked upon as lucky, but you don’t see the one small girl. Growing, learning, becoming her own person. She is just as lucky and important as the boys. Such a sweet story reminding us that girls lives are so valuable too! One that I would definitely purchase for my children’s library!

This story was suppressing. A twianesse family has been granted superior luck with ten sons. These sons are well known for all they accomplish in life. They grow up to be ten wise and lucky men. But wait, in the background there is one more, a sister, who has to grow up with the famous 10. This story peeks behind the curtain of “famous” stories to see the second hand players and note they are just as important as top tier stars. This book was lovely, and the illustrations have a familiar quality that make them warm and inviting. #BBRC
