A little paranormal mystery set by the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I am a MD local so I loved all the little references to the state pride, culture and history. The story its-self was nicely written and certainly had a paranormal mystery tone to it. Personally it felt like a "mans" book and the reading was a tad forced for me.
Darrell is a new high school teacher who happens to see ghosts - this story looks at the mystery of why and how that ghost is in the high school. It has a little racial discussion to it which is timely for the world in 2020/2021.
Enjoyable, medium-paced, paranormal mystery.

this was a great start to a mystery series, it was a great introduction to the world and to the characters in this world. I had fun trying to figure out who did it.

Unfortunately, this book did not live up to its description for me. There was too much telling rather than showing. The main characters, Darrell and Erin, were flat and annoying. Erin, in particular, got on my nerves with her constant half-sentences. "Could have eaten dinner while I waited" or "Went by the house this morning" instead of adding a simple "I" or "We" to the beginning. While it may have been intentional to show a way that many people speak in that region, it was annoying in written form. And Darrell's OCD was constantly being put front and center as if it was a huge obstacle in his life, yet except for when the author dedicated sentences or paragraphs to it, it seemed to have little impact.

The ghost story was mildly more interesting to me. In fact, the ghost story was the only reason I read the entire book. I wanted to know who the ghost was, what happened, and whether there would be a resolution. For those who will read the book, I don't want to spoil any of that. So I'll just say that I did get those answers, and though it definitely could have been livened up and more interesting for me, the ghost story and the truth behind it were mostly satisfying.

I wish this book had been better. It was a great premise and when done well, I think it could be an incredible story. Unfortunately, I just don't think it was done all that well here. It's not the worst book I've ever read, but it's not one I'd reread and not one I'd recommend to others.

A good mystery with a paranormal side. It's well written, engrossing and entertaining.
I liked the characters, the plot and the setting. The mystery kept me guessing.
I want to read other books in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

suspense, ghosts, racially-sensitive, murder, thriller, friendship, mystery, historical-research

The original crime/ghost hail from the Civil Rights era but the backlash is felt by the current ghost sensitive who is the new teacher at the local high school and already has enough baggage from the last ghost he encountered. This exploration into crimes committed in the 20th century is written with sensitivity and imagination with very realistic characters and a suitably twisty and suspenseful plot. Rather timely and very well done!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from The Wild Rose Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

History teacher and sports coach Darrell Henshaw has moved to the small town of Wilshire, Maryland to get away from his past. While he manages to leave his broken heart behind, his past experience with a ghost seems to have followed him when he sees a ghost in his new office. When the ghost won’t stop trying to get Darrell’s help, the coach tries to understand what the spirit needs from him.

But how far is Darrell willing to go to help the Wilshire ghost? With bodies dropping like flies the closer Darrell gets to uncovering the past, he has to decide how much he’s willing to risk to solve the ghost’s murder.

I went to school in Southern Maryland and spend significant time on the Eastern shore, hearing ghost stories of the region, so this book was a must read the second I saw it. From page one I was invested and the book kept me reading far longer than I should have…because it’s that good! Cannot wait for the second book in the series to drop.
