This is one of those gloriously trashy beach reads.

Everybody's nasty and the reader is so there for it.

Do NOT expect logical behavior. DO expect everyone to be thinking with their genitals.

Do NOT expect to like anyone. DO expect to be thoroughly entertained.

It will not feed your brain, but you'll enjoy the read!

Jill Childs writes complex and twisted domestic thrillers that skilfully lift the lid on the secrets we keep behind closed doors and she is back with another shocking, compulsive and chilling new tale that will keep readers on the edge of their seats: The Mistress.

Laura had found herself drawn to handsome and charismatic Ralph from the very first moment she had laid eyes on him. There was something about Ralph that had drawn her to him like a moth to the flame. It didn’t matter that Ralph was a married man, Laura had been unable to resist him and the two of them had soon embarked upon a passionate love affair that had ended up consuming and overwhelming her. Laura knew that she was sharing Ralph with his wife, Helen, but the more time she spent with him, the more she fell under his spell. Laura couldn’t imagine a life without Ralph, but despite all of her pleas, she had never managed to persuade him to leave the marital home. Laura will do anything for the man she is head over heels in love with. But would she kill for love? Would she be willing to commit murder for the sake of the man who means everything to her?

Helen is still in love with her husband. Like most marriages, they have their ups and downs, but Helen has no reason to think that she and Ralph aren’t for keeps. There is absolutely nothing that Helen wouldn’t do for her husband, so she was absolutely flabbergasted when she found out that he had cheated on her. His betrayal completely floored her and she is devastated that Ralph could be so cavalier about his marriage vows. Still, Helen hopes that they can start over. This is merely a rough patch and the bond between them is too strong for the two of them to let this bump in the road tear them apart forever. Determined to start over and to lay old ghosts to rest, Helen and Ralph decide to try again and when she goes home from work, Helen is prepared to pull out all the stops for her husband and her marriage. Until she walks through the door of their home and finds her cheating husband murdered.

What really happened to Ralph? Who wanted him dead? Is the wife or the mistress responsible? Or perhaps there is something even more sinister going on which nobody had ever imagined?

A deftly plotted thriller guaranteed to make all the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end throughout, The Mistress is a complex, addictive and searing exploration of toxic marriages, seedy affairs and dangerous secrets where the pages simply turn themselves. Best-selling author Jill Childs exquisitely blends tension, intrigue and suspense in a twisted domestic drama where absolutely nothing is what it initially seems.

A heart-pounding page-turner that is required reading for fans of B A Paris and Shalini Boland, Jill Childs’ The Mistress is domestic noir at its terrifying best.

A creepy, wild ride! This thriller employs familiar tropes from classic film noir and executes them very well

Wow what a gripping read ! Had me hooked from the first page to the last with great twists and turns! Told in two parts , the POV of the mistress and the wife , with such a massive twist at the end which led to a cracking cliffhanger !!

3.5 ✨

I enjoyed this thriller a lot and it kept me on my toes. I kept wondering what was going on, and it was a very fun thriller. I read it a couple of months ago, and it's taken me super long to put my review together, because I've been trying to wrap my head around the events of this book.

I can't say too much without giving a lot away. The characters were really fun and they kept leading me on wild goose chases. This book was predictable in some areas, but there were a couple of red herrings as well.

I'd definitely recommend this thriller.

This book was a complete miss for me. From the characters to the plot. The characters were a bit better than I originally thought and there were some good moments considering their decisions, but the whole execution could've been a lot better. With the whole premise, this could'be been more than it turned out to be. Instead, it turned into a generic story, with little unique effects.

What a really good read! I blew through this one in a day - could not put it down! The first half is told from the mistress's pov and the second by the wife's. There is a lot to take in but it is so well written you will have no issues keeping up. And the very ending? Yikes!

An intense, thrilling read that had me hooked!
As the saying goes, there are often two sides to a story, and this really plays out within this fantastic book.
Full of emotion and drama, this fast paced, thrilling read kept me guessing throughout, and then threw in an ending I hadn't anticipated.

Well written, brilliantly paced and all consuming. This book is a perfect thriller!.

Laura is amazed when a charismatic, poetry writing fellow teacher Ralph invites her for a drink that leads to the beginning of an affair. She falls head over heels for him not knowing that he is married with a young daughter. When Ralph tries to end the affair he invites her over to his house to talk about it, they argue and Laura accidentally pushes him and he falls down the stairs and dies, Helen, his wife, unexpectedly returns home as this happens and she persuades Laura to help her dispose of his body so they can carry on with their lives as he would be classed as ‘missing’. Laura’s life then goes off the rails but Helen acts as though nothing has happened. What is she hiding? The story is told firstly by Laura and then by Helen. This is a roller coaster of a read, full of lies and deceit, twists and turns and a totally unexpected ending. A recommended read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
