I loved how intricate the details were on defining your purpose and how it is important to say to yourself that you are worth it and God has a plan for you.

An inspirational message and journey through the first three chapters of Ephesians that is timely, relevant, and life-changing. Thanks to Chip Ingram for humbly sharing his faith journey that highlights his personal struggles to show how God has turned weakness into strength for His glory. Chip provides practical guidance to help you take scripture and, as Chip says, "get it from your head and into your heart," so you can live in the freedom and truth that you were created for, and that only Jesus can provide.

Chip does with this book what he has such a gift for doing...he starts with the truth from scripture and teaches how to practically apply it to life. He relates personal stories about the struggles both he and his wife faced with the lies they believed about themselves...lies that we all deal with in one way or another. Chip's insight into the truths scripture provides about these lies is backed up with a plan for battling the lies and replacing them with the truth of God's love. I like the practical plans he lays out for replacing lies with scriptural truth. His "truth cards" provide a simple way to affirm God's love of who we truly are...sons and daughters of Him. Once we see ourselves the way God sees us, then we are better equipped to face the challenges we encounter in this world and become accessible to help others.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
"The warped mirrors and misbeliefs about the meaning and purpose of our lives must be replaced with God's truth."
"...that we would see ourselves the way You do--that each of us would know our true identity and live in it daily."

I have been in bondage to lies about myself for years. Over time, as I have studied the Bible, some of these lies have been minimized. But there are others that still need work. Reading this book the first time has really helped diminish most of these lies. I had hoped for relief from my frustrations and my views of myself that were so different from how others saw me. I am now beginning to get it!
It is hard to grasp how much God loves me but the more I study His word the more I can take in. In Discovering Your True Self, Chip uses the first 3 chapters of the book of Ephesians to illustrate just how precious I am to God, so precious that He has designed me to accomplish something for Him that only I can do with the particular gifts He has bestowed on me.
If you are struggling with a negative perception of yourself, this is the book for you. Practical and easy to read it will guide you to correct your views of how God sees you which will change the way you see yourself. It takes time and effort but this is a great place to begin or continue the journey to Discovering your True Self.

Chip Ingram's latest book is full of life-changing truth practically applied to everyday life. As he has in past writings, this book engages us where we live and in how we think and see ourselves reflected in the "mirrors" of our thought-life. Here's a quote: "A.W. Tozer taught us that 'we tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. . . what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.' It is essential for us to get a high, holy, clear, accurate picture of who God really is, because our perception of God has such a powerful effect on our lives. A distorted image of Him will take us pretty far off track in life. . . I believe that the second most important thing about you is how you see yourself." - Chip Ingram "Discover Your True Self"

If you are human you will find yourself in the pages of Chip Ingram’s new book Discover Your True Self and it will change your life if you take it to heart. He begins with 2 propositions. The first is that the most important things about us are how we see God and how we see ourselves. Chip wrote a book addressing how we see God (The Real God) that opened up my eyes and gave me a more high and holy view of God. Now, in this volume, he addresses how we view ourselves and it is similarly a life-changing read. The second proposition is that our perceptions of ourselves are influenced by reflections we see in the mirrors around us. He then urges us to focus not on the world’s mirrors that are inaccurate, like fun-house mirrors, but instead to look into God’s accurate mirror found in Scripture and see ourselves as God sees us.

He goes about his task in a very personal way, showing us how the principles he is explaining have changed his and his wife’s life. Chip is as open and genuine as they come and it is one of the things that makes his message so powerful. He is methodical, identifying the lies we tend to believe about ourselves that come from faulty mirrors in one chapter and then the corresponding truth of God’s word in the next. This is also a very practical book, showing the reader a very practical way to replace the world’s inaccurate reflection of our identity with the accurate view from Scripture.

If you really take this book to heart it will change your life. If you feel unwanted, you will learn just how much the sovereign Lord of the universe wants you, if you feel insignificant, you will find out just how significant you are in the eyes of God, if you feel afraid you will find that you can have eternal security, if you feel an abiding shame or guilt you can find it lifted as you begin to purge the lies that the world’s mirrors have told you and replace them with the forgiveness promised in God’s Word. As you come to recognize that you are a child of the King, a dearly loved son or daughter who will never be abandoned or forsaken, you gain an immovable anchor for your soul in a world of constant change. That identity can be yours—that freedom from guilt and shame, that security, love and acceptance is all offered to you as a free gift. Chip lays out how you can have that for your own—don’t miss the chance! It will change your life forever.

Chip's message was clear on our "godly" identity, solidly based on God's Word and motivational !! It strengthened me on the inside and reminded me of the value and purpose given to me by God. HIs personal stories brought it to life and as always was filled with practical applications, so I can put my faith into action. I loved it, will use it and share with others.

This book was received as an ARC from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I was waiting for a book like this. Our self-help collection is very popular at our library and our community asks all the time if there are any books like Discover Your True Self and now I can say that there will be some released. I loved how intricate the details were on defining your purpose and how it is important to say to yourself that you are worth it and God has a plan for you. We get so caught up in all of the conflict and drama that we disconnect with the fact that God has a plan for us and to trust in Him. I know a lot of our community will benefit from this book and I can't wait to share it with them.

We will consider adding this title to our Self-Help collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
