This addition to my Brunstetter collection of reading and cooking books is another excellent investment. The recipes use basic pantry ingredients and do not require a culinary degree to complete. The family oriented menus are great for a few or a crowd and the easy to follow recipes insure quality results for all. I've already tried about 30 of them and have bookmarked at least that many more to try before the holidays. Along with the recipes, you'll find many stories of the Amish way of life and find it not so much different than yours or mine. I intend to gift a copy of this book to at least 6 of my younger relatives this Christmas. It can start their own Brunstetter collection.

Another great Amish Friends cookbook from this author. If you love Amish cooking, cooking from scratch, beautiful, appealing pictures of these dishes, you will love this book.

Organized by food types, an index of contributors, a section on substitution items, recipes by key ingredients, and recipes for miscellaneous things, this is a “must have” to add to your cookbook collection. I can’t wait to try many of these recipes.

Thanks to Barbour Publishers and NetGalley for the advance sample copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.

I was really looking forward to this cookbook because I love the idea of cooking from scratch. This book missed the mark for me though. The recipes were simple, but weren't anything that I couldn't easily find on google. Also, with this book being labeled as Amish recipes I wasn't expecting processed ingredients in a lot of the recipes.

I received from netgalley! lots of good recipes to go through and try.
I love looking though wandas cookbooks. I found some want to try.

I was looking forward to reading and trying this cookbook as I am interested in the Amish perspective and I love the idea of truly cooking from scratch. However, I found myself disappointed since many of the recipes call for highly processed ingredients that I wouldn't consider as "scratch" i.e. creamer powder, chocolate drink mix, Velveeta. There was a very interesting section on Dairy Products that I did find useful that taught how to make things like cheeses and yogurts truly from scratch. And lastly, there was a Miscellaneous section that had some odd recipes like "syrup" and "honey" using ingredients that did not include maple syrup or honey.

Keeping in mind that what I was only able to review merely a sample (86 pages) of the complete cookbook (220 pages) I am hopefully that the final product has more of the actual from scratch, using real ingredients, recipes that I was expecting.

Thank you to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc for allowing me to a sample copy of Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook in exchange for an honest review.

You will enjoy the gorgeous pictures that accompany and complement these delectable recipes!
You can make your own yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese and cheese balls using everyday ingredients from your grocery store or bulk food store!
You can also make trail bars, no-bake bars and pumpkin bars with peanut butter, oats, flour and canned pumpkin!
If you like homemade noodles, you can whip some up in 20 minutes with egg yolks, flour and water, that are tastier than packaged products.
Make your own healthy brown bread with wheat flour, honey, yeast, oil and salt in a few hours! (Dough rising time included) You can even make homemade cream cheese with yogurt, milk, sugar and salt in a day!
Taco salad making is easy with ground beef, Doritos, kidney beans, lettuce and cheddar cheese - mix it up in a bowl and serve it with homemade dressing!
There's a cappuccino mix and a hot chocolate mix that are wonderful for cold days - and iced coffee for those hot summer days!
For main dish entrees, there is grilled chicken with buffalo chicken or hot pizza dip, you can serve this with homemade croissant rolls and a cool broccoli salad with Hawaiian cheesecake bars for dessert -enjoy!

I would have LOVED to see the full version of this cookbook that will have 270 recipes of Amish/Mennonite from scratch recipes in it!! What I received to review was a teaser version of this book! I loved that there are actual pictures of the finished product, nicely photographed in the book. How many actually, I can't tell you as I do not have the full version. Another thing I absolutely LOVED, is it included the recipe for Hillybilly Bread, which I can't wait to make!! While I only got to view the teaser version of this book, I like it enough and can't wait to purchase the full version and discover its contents!! I give 4 stars instead of 5 because I can't provide all the information I want to because I don't have the full book to draw from. What I did see, I loved it!!

I totally love this sample of the upcoming cookbook. I have made a few of the recipes and I am looking forward to making several more. For it being just a sample of the upcoming cookbook, it was amazing to be able to review. I am a huge cookbook collector, and this is one I will buy for my collection and I will be giving it to friends and family for their holiday cooking.

This is a beautiful cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and use everyday staples you already have on hand and has beautiful pictures. I received a sample for review and can't wait to buy the book. Thank you Barbour publishing via NetGalley for the ARC copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

I have been fascinated with Amish people and their traditions and so was excited to be able to view this ARC. This is a collection of recipes from families who live in the communities and I will certainly be trying the following recipes out - pancakes for breakfast, the Herman starter for making bread, many delicious looking brownies and some great ideas for dips.
The only issue I had with this as a book was the From Scratch element. To me this implies making every element of the dish from scratch (except things like mayo) however there were what I would class as convenience items, such as tomato sauce, tinned pumpkin or chicken soup. That aside the stories told throughout the book were fascinating and I now feel I have a greater insight into Amish home cooking.
Thanks to NetGalley and Barbour books for access to this ARC.

I haven’t made any of the recipes in this book yet but plan to soon. I’m especially interested in making the energy bites and bars. I like the simplicity in the ingredients and would feel comfortable recommending this book to others.

Beautiful photos and easy recipes with real ingredients. I loved that the ingredient lists were short and frequently were all things that I keep on hand. No exotic ingredients that you'll never use again. Tons of delicious bread recipes for your pandemic baking needs plus comfort foods galore and some fun new things to try like making your own yogurts and cheeses.

Thank you to Barbour Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this cookbook. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

Amish Friends From Scratch is a cookbook full of recipes that are simple and require only a few basic ingredients. The concept behind this cookbook is great. Sometimes you want to make and eat a good and homemade meal without breaking the bank on purchasing a bunch of different ingredients. A lot of the recipes in this book were short and had just a few basic steps. A great beginners cookbook!

My eye was drawn to this cookbook initially because I live in an area with a large Amish population, so I know firsthand how delicious many Amish-made recipes taste. Thinking about that made me realize that one reason I enjoy Amish cooking is that it's usually made from scratch--the same reason I always enjoyed Sunday dinners at my grandmother's as a child. In an era where so much of the "food" people eat bears little resemblance to what would have been found in my grandmother's kitchen, I think we could all use a little more "made from scratch" in our lives.

Wanda E Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook provides exactly that--simple, delicious, made from scratch recipes made from readily available ingredients. No culinary degree required to make tasty food. There is a wide variety of recipes for all courses of a meal, and interspersed with the recipes are gorgeous photos and story snippets of Amish life. This cookbook will be well-used and loved in my home for sure!

Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is one of those cookbooks that will not only get much use, it will be one to pass down from one family member to another.
Some of the recipes here you will be familiar with, but it’s not difficult to make pancakes from scratch rather than using a mix. More cost effective and healthier too. Most cookbook recipes for Apple Butter call for cooking apples in either the crock pot or on the stove. The recipe here says to bake it; now that’s a really old-fashioned idea but the one where you will get the most flavor. Most people have made stuffed cabbage rolls but here is the German version called Galoushka. Very well laid out and wonderful photos. Guess I’ll head to the kitchen now and bake up some goodies.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

My daughter and I are LOVING this cookbook and it's eclectic mix of recipes! While it is definitely nothing close to healthy and their are some odd ingredients (sucanat, Perma-Flo), the cookbook is full of delicious sounding and looking recipes that will keep us in the kitchen for awhile. There's everything from fluffy pancakes to cottage cheese and just about everything in between.

Since I’ve been cooking from scratch from a young age for a large family, many of these recipes are familiar or close to dishes I have made before.
However, there are some uniquely Amish dishes in this cookbook, some I still need to try.
I’ve always been curious how the Amish make root beer, now I know, though I’m waiting for a special occasion to try a batch myself.
The biggest drawback for cookbooks is when they are online. It makes it much more difficult to use than if you have a hard copy.

My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love a good cookbook, and I adore exploring the cuisine of other cultures. In Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook, you will find recipes made with ingredients you can usually find in your pantry or grocery store. During these COVID Times, waiting for an Amazon or Ebay delivery can burst your cooking enthusiasm bubble. (Note: If you still somehow can't find the vital ingredient for a certain recipe, just flip to the back of the book: there is a very handy, comprehensive list of substitutions. The excellent indexes at the back of the book contain even more very simple recipes - make your own sweetened condensed milk, for example, and I am always grateful when a cookbook author includes a conversion table - or Common Equivalents, as this author so aptly entitled her index of measurements.)

In this wonderful book, you will find easy to follow recipes for making your own cream cheese and "Dairy Queen" ice cream. Yum! The Hawaiian and Herman Carrot Cake recipes are both on my To Bake list! I'm scheduling a visit to St. Jacob's Market later this week to buy a bushel of carrots (and to sample this popular Amish market's famous Apple Fritter and Ice Cream dessert!) I can't wait to try the Zucchini Fritters or the Spicy Chicken Casserole. The Mojito Drink Concentrate sounds delicious - perfect for those of us who prefer non-alcoholic beverages. The ingredients for the Ramen Noodle Salad recipe are on my kitchen counter right now, waiting for me to file this review! The Grilled Chicken recipe is next!

I was in such a cooking slump until I read this wonderful cookbook. My grocery list is now filled with wholesome, healthy ingredients. I'm going to whip up some good eats tonight, thanks to this collection of mouth-watering recipes. The pictures just seal the deal. The graphic of the baked chicken compelled to interrupt my writing of this review and pull some chicken out of my freezer!

I highly recommend this collection of Amish recipes. It is beautifully presented and the recipes are totally "doable." This is a "must have" for any serious foodie and cookbook lover!

Any cookbook that purports to be Amish is always of interest, and this one is no exception. Nice recipes with excellent introductions and descriptions. A fun book to read even if you don't cook....... but you will want to.
