Another wonderful cookbook from Wanda Brunstetter. Organized by food types (salads, breads, dairy, breakfast, etc.) and there is even a section that breaks it down by an ingredient. A must have addition to any home chef's kitchen!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and netgalley in return for my honest review.

This recipe book has so many good recipes!! She organizes the sections by food type (salads, breads, dairy, breakfast, etc.) and even has a section that breaks it down by an ingredient you want to use (BACON! Need I saw more??). This will become a staple in my kitchen now!

A wonderful Amish cookbook sampler. Many people will have memories with their Moms, Grandmothers, and family. Filled with great recipes . I also enjoyed the little stories of growing up in a Amish kitchen. It especially made me want to make some delicious dessert recipes. Thank you Harbour Publishers and Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this book.

This book was really disappointing. Most recipes could be found on Google already and it brings nothing new to the table. It is a shame because this could of been a good addition to Amish cooking books. Wish it would have been different.

I love cookbooks and have a vast collection. I was excited to see this cookbook and couldn't wait to try the recipes. When thumbing through it I read the stories inside and they made me think of days when I was growing up. I learned how to cook at my grandmother's knee. She would cook cornbread in a cast iron skillet and she taught me how to make many of her recipes. This cookbook reminds me of those days. Many of the recipes are similar to the recipes I knew when I was growing up. I have gotten too busy to cook, but this book reminded me to take time for the simple things in life. The pictures are vibrant and colorful, the content is well organized and easy to find. There is a vast amount of recipes included in the book from breakfast to breads to main dishes and many in-between. There are the tried and true favorites and there are some new twists on some old classics. Everything you could want can be found in this book. I would definitely recommend it!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for allowing me to preview this cookbook!

I love Amish cookbooks. I have two by Beverly Lewis and will have to add this one by Wanda E. Brunstetter to my collection. Although it is a sample of the whole book., it left me wanting more. All of the recipes looked delicious!

**I received an e-ARC from NetGalley for an honest review**

While the final cookbook will be over 200 pages, the sample of the book I was given had 86 pages to review. So with that in mind, I set to work trying out some of those recipes!

First and foremost, anyone who grew up cooking with a "from scratch" family will recognize several of the recipes. Most of the recipes in the book will use things that you already have in your pantry and won't require multiple trips to the store.

While all of the recipes I tried were amazing and tasty, my favorite was the Brown Bread- it tasted just like the bread my grandmother would make when I was growing up. I've tried finding the recipe for years and have come close, but this is an almost perfect match!

I would recommend these recipes as great starting points to individualize and create your own family recipes to keep handing down through the generations.

The photography was beautiful and inviting, as any cookbook should be. The font was easy to read and just the perfect size for failing eyes without being so huge as to hurt people with good eyesight.

Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook is a cookbook with basic Amish/country staple dishes in a simple style. Due out 1st Nov 2020 from Barbour Books, it's 224 pages and will be available in spiral bound format.

The eARC provided was an 86 page sample with recipes for breakfast, (non-alcoholic) drinks and snacks, breads rolls & crackers, salads & side dishes, main dishes, desserts, snacks & candy, dairy products, miscellaneous, equivalents & substitutions (lots of good tips), and several indexes which include contributors, recipes by each section, and VERY helpfully, an index of main ingredients with recipes included featuring each main ingredient..

The photography is appealing and warm and emphasizes the comfort and simplicity of good food with good friends and family. The typography and layout are homey, with recipes presented individually, organized by section.

Many of these recipes will be familiar to cooks who have had family recipes handed down for generations. The recipes all have ingredients listed in American standard measurements only. The written directions are clear and easy to follow. There is no nutritional information given for the sample recipes, and the contributors names are listed for each. There are very few convenience or premade ingredients here (as could be expected from the title). The only things I saw were things like instant coffee powder and powdered creamer. Everything else is from scratch. Also many of these recipes have large yields, perfect for parties, reunions, gatherings, etc.

Five stars. (With the assumption that the rest of the recipes and book quality are to the same standard as the sample provided).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

There are always good recipes in Amish Cookbooks. There were a few new ones that I never heard of before such as the ice cream toppings that I would love to try. I believe everything tastes better made from scratch and this cookbook shows wonderful pictures and recipes to back up that believe. I'm glad that I was able to preview it before it went out for sale so I can keep an eye out to order it for our library.

A nice little cookbook with some tried and true recipes. I was expecting to find some different and new dishes, so that was a bit disappointing.

A great collection of recipes from the Amish. I love that the majority of recipes are using common everyday ingredients, and are easy to follow. Especially want to try the stuffed french toast recipe. Would highly recommend this book and author.

Beautiful book! I love Amish cookbooks! This book has some delicious recipes from scratch and I can't wait to make some of them! It's very pretty and organized. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

Well, I was about to explain that while I thought this was a beautiful cookbook with lovely photos and a nice recipe selection, it felt like it was missing a lot of substance. Especially in the main dishes, it just did not feel complete enough. But I see now this may in fact be a sample rather than the complete cookbook. If that is the case then I can increase my star rating from 3 to 4. For example there is a lovely picture of a whole roasted chicken, but there is no recipe included for it. I hope I received just a sample which would explain what seems like a beautiful cookbook that feels incomplete.

This is the second Wanda Brunstetter cookbook that I've used and I loved it as much as the first one. The recipes are pure comfort food. And I loved the pictures that went along with the recipes!

When I see a cookbook boasting “from scratch” recipes I look for just that. Many of the recipes are common and found easily in many cookbooks. As well, in my opinion, from scratch recipes an those claimed as Amish should not have canned soup in them unless the canned soup recipe is included in the book. On the positive side the pictures, layout and overall visual appeal is spot on for this type of recipe book

Amish cooking has a reputation for being delicious and from scratch, with very little processed food. This is was a sample read of a cookbook. There was a page of Common Equivalents which is helpful: for example a pund of apple is about 3 medium apples. I was tickled to find the recipe for a Herman starter. Several recipe called for cream-of-something soup, that doesn't live up to the "from scratch" title of the cookbook.
An interesting story about the author's two-year-old. Perhaps there are other interesting anecdotes.

Review of sample - about 60 of 200 pages. The Kindle sample does not put the book in the best light. Pages are chopped and out of order, making it difficult to distill and follow the theme. The sample appears in order and is attractively presented on the NetGalley app.

I like the idea of this book. I'm a fan of from-scratch cooking, and the best recipes are often those developed and refined in the kitchens of great home cooks. The recipes and layout had the sense of a church cookbook - often the sources of the hidden gems and geniuses of the culinary world. The pictures are enticing, and some of the recipes - particularly those for baked goods and homemade cheese - were interesting. There's even a recipe for clover flower syrup, which is exactly what it sounds like.

From the sample, I was unclear how these recipes reflected the title. Were all of the contributors Amish, and all friends of the author's? Does the frequent use of canned cream of chicken soup qualify as "from scratch" cooking? Or Amish? I have questions.

Also, although I appreciated the author's restraint in presenting the recipes - there are no novellas about how this or that dish reminds her of a childhood cat - I wish there had been more guidance about the recipes and more context about the contributors. Various recipes for fresh cheese call for yogurt, sour cream, and rennet as the curdling agent. I would appreciate some direction about the differences I might expect among them and which I might prefer. And it would be wonderful to have a line or two about each of the contributors, who have marvelously evocative names, and who live in places that sound delightful.

Many thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

When life for the entire universe and planet turns on its end and like everyone else you "have nothing to do" while your place of work is closed and you are continuing to be in #COVID19 #socialisolation, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today. And it is way too hot to go outside, so why not sit in from of the blasting a/c and read and review books?? BTW - stay home and save lives!!!!!!!! No tan is worth dying for.

I requested and received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review.

From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸.

New, from New York Times bestselling author of Amish fiction, Wanda E. Brunstetter-- A must-have cookbook that goes back to the basics of cooking from scratch!

Why does nothing compare to the memories of Great-Grandma’s food? Could it be because she made everything from scratch? Amish and Mennonite cooks contribute recipes that celebrate the value of skipping the factory-made shortcuts and cooking from scratch.

Over 200 recipes are divided into traditional categories from main dishes and sides to desserts and snacks. Also included are kitchen tips and stories about growing up around an Amish kitchen. Encased in a lay-flat binding and presented in full colour, home cooks of all ages will be delighted to add this cookbook to their collections.

I love Wanda Brunstetter's books and aways wanted the recipes - here they are!!!! I live close to Amish and Mennonite country so I am always going to the farm stands for produce and baking ... no wonder my butt is so big. I absolutely loved this book and have already ordered a copy for myself and the library...samples are such a great idea for reviewers but then we tend to want the whole book.

It is well set up and the recipes are understandable to cooks of all levels - this is a delightful addition to any cookbook shelf.

As always, I try to find a reason to not rate with stars as I love emojis (outside of their incessant use by "🙏-ed Social Influencer Millennials/#BachelorNation survivors/Tik-Tok and YouTube Millionaires/etc. " on Instagram and Twitter... Get a real job, people!) so let's give it 🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧
