This is a cute story from the life of Bobby Orr, a famous Canadian hockey player.

As a child Bobby wants new ice skates. But what does he get, his brothers skates. Still he makes them his, despite they are a little too big. And he learns to skate like no ones business, and then when he finally get new skates, he passes them on.

Good story about working with that you have.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This book wasn't what I had expected. I thought it would be about Bobby Orr's early life that lead him to his career, but if you read this book without knowing who Bobby Orr is you would just think it's the name of a character in a cute book about skates. I think this book's message was about being appreciative and working hard for what you love. It was a simple book about a pair of hand-me-down skates that became very important to Bobby and it was great.

Definitely A Canadian read for every child, we have all had hand me down's including skates, well worn with ambition & love. Exciting! a must read for every Canadian child

This book is double Ohhhhh inducing. The story is sweet and heartfelt, and true. Bobby just wanted a shiny new pair of black skates for his birthday, and instead got his big brother’s hand-me-downs. They didn’t fit perfect, but they worked and allowed him to continue his love of skating and hockey. He made the skates work, and made memories in them to last a lifetime. And when the time was right, they became his little brother's hand-me-down skates.

When I requested this book from #netgalley, I imagined a story about hockey perhaps along the lines of The Hockey Sweater. Kara Kootstra's story, although different from The Hockey Sweater, is a beautiful sweet story about the very young Bobby Orr, who, dreams getting shiny new skates, and (to his initial dismay) lands up getting "hand me down" skates instead. I loved the message of the book, and, I loved the beautiful illustrations. A child need not love hockey to enjoy this book.

Thank you #netgalley for this e-ARC in return for my honest review. #5stars

'Bobby Orr and the Hand-Me-Down Skates' by Kara Kootstra and Bobby Orr with illustrations by Jennifer Phelan is a picture book about the famous hockey player from his childhood.

Young Bobby Orr thinks of nothing but hockey. His wish is to get a new pair of skates he sees in town. When his birthday comes around, he's sure that is what he's gotten. Instead, he gets his older brothers hand-me-down skates. How will Bobby react?

This was a really nice story about a pretty extraordinary hockey player. It models some pretty good behavior. The illustrations are very nice too.

I think a lot of hockey fans, like me, will relate to this story of a boy who is initially disappointed with his "new" hand me down skates. Eventually, little Bobby (widely regarded as one of the all-time greatest hockey players) learns to love his skates and there is a great moment when he passes them on to someone else. The illustrations makes the book feel older, which kind of fits the subject matter with kids skating on frozen ponds. I enjoyed this, not sure people who are not hockey fans would though.

Wow, I am a sucker for a book that tugs on your heart strings and this book accomplished that task. This was a beautiful story of Bobby Orr making the best of a disappointing situation and learning that it doesn't matter what you get it is what you do with it. I loved the ending, I even teared up.

I highly recommend this book to all kids especially the hockey and ringette players and kids that just love to skate and be outdoors.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

This charming true story is about the beloved hockey icon Bobby Orr. It seems Bobby was created to be just that... an icon, and a true hockey Superman.

As a young boy he plays hockey before school, after school and any other time he is able. The ice is his second home. It seems that he is one with the game.

His birthday is fast approaching and he wants so much to have a brand new pair of skates. Every day he passes a shop window and drools over the pair he wants. They are black, shiny, have gleaming new blades and spotless clean laces that are tied in perfect bows. Yes, those beauties would definitely be his choice for his special day.

He is extremely excited to open his birthday present because he has dropped so many hints about the exact skates that he desires. But when he unwraps his gift he discovers not the skates he dreamed of but hand-me-down skates that are old weathered-leather with rusted blades and limp floppy laces. How did Bobby receive this second hand pair when his heart so wanted the new spiffy ones?

Although deeply disappointed he graciously accepts these hand-me-downs and once he gets used to them they become an extension of himself. They are inseparable. Will Bobby ever get to have the new skates his heart so longs for and if he does where will his beloved hand-me-downs be homed next?

"Log Driver's Waltz" illustrator Jennifer Phelan does an outstanding display of the classic story making Kara Koostra's storyline almost animated. This book will be loved by both young and old and celebrates one of the greatest hockey players ever and the fabulous sport of hockey. I highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful story with gentle artwork. While hockey fans will enjoy it on a different level, loving the sport is not necessary to love the book. The message is a good one. This is a book I’ll be gifting for the holidays.

This was a beautiful book. The messaging was wonderful and timely.

Your child will enjoy the story if they are hockey crazy or don’t know who Bobby Orr is. They may want to find out more after reading this delightful story.

The messaging of the story is beautiful. You don’t always get what what you want but sometimes that is even better. Work hard and pass on your good fortune. Lessons young and old can all use!

I am not setting an age range as anyone reading will really enjoy the story and illustrations.

Loved it!!.

Bobby orr wanted special skates for his 11th birthday. Unfortunately, he got hand me down skates. He reacted with grace and didn't let his parents know he was disappointed. That really impressed me because it can be hard for an 11 year old. The story is written really well and can be enjoyed by hockey fans and non hockey fans alike. Bobby Orr's fans are going to love reading this book to their children.

Biography about Bobby Orr's childhood for elementary level readers. Kootstra tells the story of the special skates Orr wanted and the equally special hand me down ones he received. She weaves facts into a story that comes to life. Softly colored illustrations support the text and bring the readers into the story.

First, I want to just say that I don’t really know much about hockey nor any of the famous players within the sport. But the premise of the story made me believe that the title character (and one of the authors) must be well-known within the Canadian hockey circles. Despite not knowing much, I still enjoyed the story. As a recipient of many hand-me-down articles of clothing when I was younger, I was able to relate to the young boy’s feelings and also the feeling that you can still create great memories with these items. It was quite heartwarming to see him pass down those old skates to his younger brother - with these wishes for great memories to be made to his brother.

Bobby Orr and the Hand-me-down Skates by Bobby Orr and Kara Kootstra is the beautifully told story of a young boy's dreams, disappointments, and loyalties, all brought together with stunning illustrations that dramatically evoke a classic Canadian experience.

This is the story of a young Bobby, who yearns for a new pair of skates, only to be disappointed when his parents gift him with his brother's hand-me-downs instead. But as time goes by, Bobby's passion for the game of hockey eclipses his disappointment, and he recognizes and appreciates the skates for the abilities they have given him. Any Canadian child will know that Bobby Orr goes on to become a hockey legend, and his story is one that will certainly resonate as a way to work through and triumph over life's little adversities. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for this ARC.
