How frustrating is it to be told by all the different sources the things you must do to be successful in life? This book definitely does NOT do that. It instead takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I think that everybody would benefit from this little pocket book. This is a year of unprecedented stress including a global pandemic and crumbling democracies. I learned little ways to control my stress when I read this book.

This book is very useful for learning how to recognize and manage stress in your life. It’s meant to be used as a companion to journaling. Each chapter reviews a different topic relating to recognizing and managing stress and contains questions or activities for the reader to engage with to better cope with stress. The book also provides resources to go to outside the book. Overall, I think this is a great resource for the reader looking to manage stress.

*Disclaimer: I was provided a free copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book opens with a quick overview what stress is. It has many effects on our mental and physical wellbeing, but it is not the events that are stressing us as much as what we think about them. The Mind Body Medicine approach starts with the premise that our mind, body and spirit are interconnected parts of the same system, and something that helps or hurts one part will affect other parts too. Thus, one may attempt to cope with physical stress by changing one's thoughts into a calmer mindset. There are some exercises to try to identify the stressors, the resources and the coping strategies you have in your life. Coping strategies refer to ways of appraising the situation and its threat level and your own ability to do something about the situation or your own emotions in response. Some coping strategies are healthier than others, and you should be aware of your typical responses. The author writes about social support, attribution styles, self-efficacy and ways to enhance your own happiness or finding the flow state, among other things. There are some calming mindfulness and relaxation exercises as well as notes about healthy eating, physical activity and spirituality.

If you have read about the psychology of stress before the chances are there is not much that is new information, but even so this is a concise useful reminder to all of us who deal with stress on a regular basis. The exercises and questionnaires give you food for thought and are worth a try.

I read an advanced reading copy from Netgalley that has a missing section at the end. I am assuming the finished book will look somewhat different from the ARC because the formatting was off and the images look weird on Kindle.

I found this book very helpful with my stress, after many years of finding methods to help my stress, I found all the solutions I have discovered along the way in this book, All the methods and practices to work on stress are easily explained and make sense and there are exercises at the end of the chapter that will reinforce what you learn.

When I first starting reading the book the exercise stressed me out but I made myself skip the exercise and read the rest of the book and found many helpful idea in helping my stress.

As a therapist and behavior support specialist, this book has provided some really great advice that I can pass along to my clients and incorporate into behavior support plans.

A light, engaging coach to managing temporary or chronic stress, with a focus on self-efficacy and mindfulness. Teaches tangible strategies like autogenic training (teaching your nervous system to relax), purposeful self-expression, and meditation.

“thoughts are simply content—words and little stories […] you need not allow them to determine your emotional state.”

Special mention to the chapter on using flexible coping strategies for challenging me to identify my coping mechanisms for what they are (sometimes good, sometimes bad).

“being happy and being debilitated by stress are often seen as incompatible states of being. There is no way to avoid stress and challenge in life, but it is entirely possible to maintain a sense of happiness and well-being even in the most difficult circumstances.”

This is OK, and probably very helpful for some. I don't like to disparage the self-help book because some readers will benefit from it. It has a number of exercises that may lead to some helpful insights and awareness which can benefit anyone. There are also some good ideas here. Maybe one to add to a starter self-help collection.

I really appreciate the ARC for review!!

A very useful book to work through periods of stress. There are exercises and opportunities for reflection as well as explanations. What better time than to pick it up than now during a pandemic! I would highly recommend a read and am grateful to Netgalley and publisher for this book from a series which I am taking notes from for self-help.

A useful guide, which I will recommend, as being new to me in many ways. I did not know about autogenic trading, for example. Although I already knew a lot about an anti stress diet. In fact I learned a lot from such a short book, it was amazing.

This is a helpful and informative book for people battling anxiety. The exercises are well explained and easy to implement. The concepts weren't new to me, but things such as autogenic training and guided imagery may be new and beneficial to readers. Questions for reflection are included that could help people better deal with their anxiety issues. There are also numerous resources provided that could be helpful to many. This is a great resource to have, especially during the pandemic.

think this was definitely my favorite of the pocket books I have read so far because I felt like I could really relate to the things it listed as stressors and the tips and tricks the author gave for de-stressing really do help. This pocket book gave so many examples of things that could cause stress in your life and then a lot of really helpful ways to focus and calm down and organize your thoughts. These methods include things such as exercise, praying or meditating, expressing your feelings and confiding in others for emotional support, and planning for the future. This book also brought up some great questions to ask yourself when you become stressed and even recommends bringing a journal with you throughout the day to journal your thoughts if you become overwhelmed. This book also includes other resources outside of the book which I think is a great addition because it allows people to further their research and tailor it to their needs. Another thing I really liked about this book was that it had an entire chapter focusing on the causes of stress eating and the negatives that are a result of it, and also what foods to supplement sugary and fatty foods with. I love how this book also talks about how you can still eat when you’re stressed, just replace it with healthy foods and then exercise to gain more energy. Overall this was such a great read and I highly recommend it for anyone who is dealing with a lot of stress and would like to learn some tips and tricks on how to manage it.
