The Pocket Therapy for Anxiety book, by Edmund J. Bourne and Lorna Garano has some good ideas and tips about dealing with anxiety. It would make a good addition to a take-along emergency kit for someone who needs reminders in the throes of a panic attack. The authors give a brief overview of several calming techniques and reframing processes, which would probably be useful if used consistently.

Tips on exercise and diet are less helpful, as they are so general as to be common knowledge, or, in the case of "acid/alkaline diets," absolute nonsense with no scientific evidence behind it. The book also has very few concrete examples and talks overwhelmingly in generalities. To make up for that, there are many places where readers are referred to websites for examples.

In short, a good overview for those who might need a small book to take along with them, but there's not much new here.

I enjoyed the author's organization style and ease of conversation in the book , am so glad I read this , I wish I had had this during my medical practice to share with others I was treating for anxiety -it is a great guide.

I really liked this little book because you can have it with you wherever you go!! I’ve suffered from anxiety for many years and have read a lot on the subject. I wouldn’t say any of the information in the book is new, but it is in a convenient, less than 200 page format. I use it on the spot when I’m feeling like an anxiety attack is coming on and it works great for that issue. It explains how to relax your body and mind, stop expecting the worse, how exercise and eating right helps you stay calm, and tools for turning off the constant worry factor that a lot of people that suffer from anxiety experience on a daily basis.

The authors are coming out with two new books in addition to this one in November that I bet are going to be just as helpful. They are called Pocket Therapy for Emotional Balance and Pocket Therapy for Stress. I hope to be able to review both of these in the near future!

I would recommend this to anyone that struggles with mental health issue. I feel you can never read enough or be reminded of tips to use when you suffer from this debilitating health issue.

Thank you NetGalley and New Harbinger Publications for an ARC of this book in exchange for my review.

The concepts aren't new, but the information is laid out in a way that could be helpful to a reader battling anxiety, especially during the pandemic. There was more depth to the book than I expected. There are also coping strategies that readers could find quite useful. Techniques include progressive relaxation, meditation, and affirmations. It's a quick, easy read, but there are a lot of tools to put in your toolbox and pull out when you're feeling anxious.

This book for those with anxiety disorders impressed me with its depth and coping strategies. Bourne and Garano provide a new level of confidence in their reader that there are ways to cope with anxiety. I would highly recommend this book to anxiety sufferers and to anyone supporting someone with anxiety. I look forward to the book's publication later this year. My thanks to Netgalley and publisher for providing a digital copy in exchange for my review. 5/5 stars.

While helpful there was nothing unique about the advice in this book. It is well written easily digestible. I highly recommend it for people who need a catch-all for coping strategies or who might be early on in their journey.

Some of these techniques for dealing with anxiety are already in my toolkit, others are new to me. In particular, I had forgotten progressive relaxation, and there are some useful new affirmations and methods of meditation that help me. We are suffering a lot more anxiety in General, due to covid, so this is a timely book. I found a lot of information, in a short space, such as ways of reacting to the issue ; catastrophising for example, very helpful. Would recommend.

This was such a neat read! This book includes deep breathing exercises, and other great tips and tricks for staying calm in stressful situations or any time you may feel anxious about something. This book is geared towards adults but can be very helpful for teens too. I really enjoyed the fact that it was less than 200 pages because it was a very quick and easy read but also contained helpful information that will be easy to remember during times when I become anxious. I definitely recommend checking this book out if you enjoy reading self help books centered around ways to check up on your mental health and self care.

This book offers a great way for people who have anxiety to find access to coping strategies and tools for managing their symptoms. I struggle with anxiety, and have found the tips and tricks in this book accessible, helpful, and simple to follow.

I appreciate that this book begins with some information about different types of anxiety, while assuring readers that this knowledge is not necessary (and indeed, that knowledge does not equal success in coping). I also appreciate the commentary on how to get connected with help outside oneself.

All in all, a great little guide to help out those who need some tips for managing their anxiety.

Being a person who has coped with anxiety most of my life, I found this small book big on good advice and techniques on handling stressful situations. I even realized what type of anxiety I have. It is written in language very understandable and not a lot of unnecessary information. I recommend it to anyone looking for ways to combat their feelings.

This pocket guide had some great ideas for helping people or myself with anxiety. Many are methods I have heard from before but it was nice to have everything in reference form. This book does not cover the use of medication at all.

Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book.

Anyone with anxiety can benefit from the information and tips in this book. As the title suggests, it's a "pocket guide" to anxiety, not an extensive guide, so I would still suggest that someone suffering from extreme anxiety should seek out help from a professional. However, I think someone who already is on the path of working on their anxiety would benefit greatly from this guide which gives tips and exercises on how to confront anxiety head-on and deal with it in the moment.

This is a great little book for someone that is familiar with mindbody practices and how they can support anxious tendencies. It's helpful that the tools provided are given in detail, allowing for a full understanding of the technique, leaving little room for error. An accompanying audio track for the relaxation exercises would be helpful, but not necessary. I will recommend this book to clients!

Hi everyone!

First of all I want to say that I've been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for over a year now and lately I’m getting a lot better. So I wanted to read this just to understand anxiety and get even better.

I've read many articles and watched many videos to find a solution and the main problem was that everyone always says something different that they liked.
Instead, this book suggest all the different things you could do to ease your anxiety: how to relax you body and mind (with various techniques), how to practice self care, nutrients and physical activity you need and most important how to deal with anxiety on the spot. So you will have the opportunity to choose which things fit you better and start using them in your everyday life.

In the end this is a great short read that could definitely help everyone who is feeling a little anxious or someone that is dealing with panic attacks. I'll definitely use the new things that it taught me the next time I feel scared or overwhelmed

This is an easy to read and sensible guide to managing anxiety.

It is written in plain English and succinctly explains the causes and treatments of anxiety in a simple yet non-patronising manner.

I found the chapter on facing your fears particularly interesting and look forward to applying the knowledge to my own anxieties.

Parts of this book would be very helpful for teenagers - the clear explanations and lack of judgement mean than it is an accessible book for school students experiencing anxiety. This book is clearly aimed at adults, however, and so I would want to select chapters carefully rather than using the whole book.

I did feel that the chapters on exercise and diet didn't quite match the standard of the rest of the book - some terms went undefined and I do feel that these sections would have benefited from some diagrams and clearer links to research.

Nevertheless, this is a very good book which covers a deceptively wide range of strategies for dealing with anxiety, despite its short and accessible format.

This is a compact, easy read on what anxiety is, how it affects the mind and body, and how to cope with it in various ways. It begins by explaining various forms of anxiety and common ways to relax the body and mind, followed by several ways to alleviate anxiety in daily life. These include changing thought patterns, exposure to what causes the anxiety, eating a good diet and exercising, and ways to make your life a little less stressful.

This is a good book to read and keep on hand if you are just learning about anxiety and how to manage it. It could be something to read on a commute or keep on hand in a purse if you find you ever need it. Most of the insights in it are not things that can't be found anywhere else, such as an internet search or many other books, but they are perfectly good for someone looking for a quick, broad overview of the topic, either for themselves or someone they care about. I also like how it ends with ways to cope with anxiety you may be dealing with in a particular situation, like a guide in an emergency, and even invites you to list your own favorite ways of coping, so that you can remember them when you need them.
