This has it all!!

The characters are brilliantly written, you instantly like them and (if you are like me) instantly fall head over heels in love - I have always loved a man in a kilt!

I've not read any of Allison B, Hanson's books before (why!!!) I have certainly been missing out on something here, I will definitely be looking out for her books in the future.

This is such an easy to read book, it's very fast-paced and even for the slowest reader - ie: me, I zoomed through, it's sexy, thrilling and seductive!

This book was just outstanding. I just had so much fun reading this story. I’m really excited to see what’s next from this author.

Very happy surprise! I love a marriage of convenience trope, and this book had it in spades. Likable characters, so much fun angst. Everything you could want in a romance.

Many thanks to the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for my ARC. All opinions are my own.

Her Accidental Highlander Husband by author Allison B. Hanson was a great start to the Clan MacKinlay series. Mari and Cam's characters were a pleasure to read from the story's start and their introduction was anything but mediocre. Strong characters and entertaining verbal barrages ensured success in what will be another fabulous Highlander book series. A couple of twists along the way that sneaks up on readers during the course of the story ensures for total raptuous attention to the book.

A lot about this premise is very good. Traumatic backstory plus an accidental marriage with a big, emotionally unavailable Scot? It was bound to be enjoyable. And I did enjoy quite a bit of it!

Unfortunately, there were also some significant detractors for me. The way Cam deals with Mari goes beyond charmingly oblivious and bad with emotions and shoots toward being so unaware as to be unbelievable, which rather takes away from a good deal of their romantic arc.

There was also a propensity for Mari and Cam to move past pretty unforgivable betrayals pretty dang quickly. It’s one thing to be benevolent or even saintly; it’s another thing to present an utter betrayal as if it’s just a complication or mistake. It’s at best distracting to the plot and at worst extremely unhealthy.

I received a digital advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This has to be one of the most emotional stories I've ever read and I'm not afraid to admit I ugly cried a few times! Such an amazing story written by Allison B. Hanson with awesome characters that will take a little piece of your heart with them.

Physical abuse is one of the most awful and yet common problem in any age and in this story, it's Marian who has endured horrifying abuse from her husband until the night she kills him before he manages to kill her. What follows will have you on the edge of your seat....as she runs....as she finds a safe place....as she falls in love....and, finally, as she faces her death.

As for Cameron, he certainly is my kind of hero in a book!! He's the clan's War Chief and is like a man possessed when in battle but yet he has such a kind and gentle heart. As he tries to protect Marian, so much goes wrong and against his better judgement, he falls in love with her. He, who never wanted to marry and fall in love!! He also has a wicked sense of humour and I was actually laughing out loud when he traded words with the Dowager Duchess! HA!

All in all, I loved the story and even though I know some readers will shy from the abuse, it's part of the story and everything makes sense in the end.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Complementary copy given for honest review and opinion.
It has been a while since I have picked a historical romance to read but this book is a wonderful book with historical references to England and Scotland.

An abusive wife hunted for murdering her husband when it was in fact self defense. An honest, man determined not to marry ends up in a hasty hand fasting that turns into something more.
This book was filled to action, suspense, a little mystery and of course romance. This was the first book I have read from this author and I will be looking for more of her work.
Loved this book

DNF. I tried but I could not get into the characters not matter how many times I tried to continue the book.

1.5 stars -- The beginning was really nice and I really liked how it seemed it would pan out, but I really disliked a good majority of this book.

Trigger/Content warnings for: domestic physical abuse/assault (on-page descriptions + emotions and flashbacks pertaining to the experience), panic attacks, emotional abuse.

When I picked up this book, I was instantly intrigued by our heroine. She was so strong and I loved how her panic attacks and trauma from her previous marriage were discussed on-page and described. It was very well done. However, I felt like once I got past the first third of the novel, I lost interest and the writing just went downhill.

I had wanted more from the relationship, but once you hit a certain point, Marian's emotional struggles disappeared (even when she was assaulted AGAIN and kidnapped). During a couple of points of extreme stress (moments that would expect to cause a person to experience moments of panic due to their previous experiences), she had no reaction whatsoever and it just seemed really unrealistic that her panic attacks and trauma would disappear once she became slightly more comfortable because of her accidental husband.

Another issue I had was with the pacing. The middle parts of the novel had some good plot-driving and character developing moments, but it really just felt like a whole lot of nothing. By the time the characters made it to the end of the story, I was incredibly bored, uninterested in what the conclusion could have been, and annoyed with how it turned out.

This was just not my cup of tea.

I honestly wish I had just DNFd this instead of pushing through.

Loved this book. Will recommend highly to anyone who loves the strong highlander hero. It reminded me a bit of my favorite Julie Garwood books.

This is the first book I have read by this author and u will be waiting for the next book in the series because I really loved this book.

Mari killed her abusive husband and ran away back to Scotland. However, killing a duke cannot go unpunished especially when the killer is a scot.

When Cam sees a woman running towards him, he has no choice but to protect her. Cam never wants to marry but when he ends up we'd to Mari he is determined to protect her at all costs.

I loved that there are no secrets between cam and Mari. He knows from the beginning what she is running from and does all he can to make sure that she feels safe. Their relationship was sweet and Cam was so gentle, caring, and protective.

Couldn't put the book down and finished in one day. After a book slump this really broke me threw it.

ARC received for review

Marian and Cameron were married the minute they meet each other...literally. Cameron never wanted to get married because of his status/job as war chief. Marian didn't want to get married after her first arsehole of a husband. Fate had other plans. They fell in love, though neither one would say it or admit it. The law finally caught up with her and it looks like all hope is lost. Make sure you have a box (or two) of Kleenex handy.

It sounds like there is a previous book with her sister and the Laird, but I can't find it. The next one is gonna be good too.

This is a well-written, sweet romance despite the darker undertones of abuse and murder in self-defense. Themes of hurt/comfort and marriage of convenience help to move the plot along and define the characters. I love the way the laws of the land are turned inside out for the accidental hand fasting, which puts Marion under Cameron’s protection. The Crown sends hunters into the Highlands creating quite a bit of suspense and intrigue throughout. The romance is sweet and caring, though they are strangers and this causes some interesting conflicts.
All in all, a good, well plotted escape.

Marion, Duchess of Endsmere, killed her abusive husband after being mistreated the entirety of her marriage by hitting him with a fire poker. She runs affter it happens, fearing she will be killed and goes to Scotland where she meets a clan laird named Cameron who doesn't want a wife after just avoiding a marriage, but he agrees to hand fast with her, so she's safe from English soldiers. Somehow, it quickly goes from protection to sex which I found hard to believe given she just killed her husband after his abusive nature. I expected it to take more time for her to get accustomed to Cameron.

Readers will fall for Cameron though. He's willing to help her to protect her and who doesn't love a protective alpha?

Trigger warnings: rape, spousal abuse

Despite being a huge historical fiction fan, I don't tend to read a lot about those hot Scots in kilts - though Jamie Fraser from the show Outlander does it for me. But marriages of convenience are my jam, so I was eager to join this blog tour!

Mari flees London after murdering her husband, who has abused her for many years. Finally, she fears for her life enough that she takes action and kills him. Her husband not only beat and isolated her for their entire marriage so she has no friends and connections and she is Scottish and her husband was a duke. She knows she will hang. Mari hasn't spoken to her sister in years but figures the law will be less likely to look for her there than her father's home, so that is where she runs to. However, the English law is hot on her tail. When she arrives on the Mackinlay land, the first person she sees is Cameron. She knows that he is her only chance, so she runs into his arms and tells him that his lady, Kenna, is her sister. Cameron claims that they are married, and the two are handfasted in his doing so. Legally, they are wed. Since he claims she's not the fugitive the men are looking for, they have to return with a warrant to claim her.

In the months it takes for the English to return with the proper documents, Mari and Cameron fall for one another, despite both having their guard up. Cameron is a war chief and doesn't want to marry, let alone have a love marriage. He doesn't want to be distracted during a battle, and he doesn't want a wife or children to mourn him. Mari never planned to wed again after her awful first experience, but Cameron is gentle and understanding with her and helps her to heal. It takes some time, but they let go of their insecurities and worries to be together.

Of course, the law finally does catch up with Mari. The couple and their friends - Mari's sister Kenna and her husband, the Mackinlay laird Lach - must figure out how to keep Mari safe and their family together.

Overall, I loved this one. It was both steamy and sweet. The sex scenes were hot, and these two really loved one another, first as spouses/friends, soon as spouses/friends with benefits, and eventually as true lovers. The only thing "more" I wanted was some additional detail at times. I found myself doubting the accuracy of the legal process in this one, but then some last minute details that I could have used earlier in that section legitimized it.

Her Accidental Highlander Husband has a content warning of domestic abuse (physical and emotional), kidnapping, and the mention of rape, loss of a child, and familial sexual abuse. These are all tough topics but dealt with very well. This was a 4 star read for me! My thanks to Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours, the author, publisher, and NetGalley for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! That is all I can say after finishing this read. It starts off heavy and ends heavy, but in a good way. Mari is forced to make a hard decision and then run for her life. She ends up in the arms, literally, of a highland war chief who, luckily, goes along with her story of being his wife. Little did either know that their conversation was legally binding in Scotland.

As two people who never wanted a spouse (or another spouse in Marian's case) are forced to forge a new life together, they come to care for each other. Everyone knows that the English will not stop looking for Mar though, so dreams and hopes are soon shattered.

****Potential spoilers*****
The multiude of emotions that I felt during Mari's confinement were sometimes overwhelming. The author was able to bring such emotion to this part of the story that I was not sure we were even going to get a HEA (we do though no worries!!) BUT WHAT A RIDE. From the England to Scotland and back it was such a journey.

Her Accidental Highlander Husband by Allison B. Hanson is the First book in the Clan MacKinlay Series. This is the story of Cameron MacKinlay and Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere.
Marian killed her husband that was very abusive to her, now she is on the run from the officers of the Crown. Seeking to find somewhere safe to hide, Marian heads to Scotland where her sister has married a Lair. But she literally runs into Cameron when she is being chased. Cameron has never planned to marry after seeing what happened to his mother. So claiming to be Marian's husband when she needs safety was just to be a jester of safety nothing real....but feelings start to become to much to ignore. Enjoyed their story.
