I was pleasantly surprised with this children's book about a boy called Robert who baked a big cake in order to have a cake party. His party didn't go to plan but there was a happy ending which filled Robert with joy. The story of this book was lovely and I enjoyed seeing Robert do a lot of things with his Dad and his dog. The illustrations were very bright and colourful. My daughter enjoyed the book too and immediately said that she wanted to also have a party and have a big cake!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Robert and the World's Best Cake is such a charming story, filled with great, subtle details and vibrant, lovely illustrations. The story follows Robert and has father when they decide to have a great cake party and make invitations, only to have them blown away! With the two left, Robert decides to have the party with his dad and adorable puppy as the two he can now invite...and then others start showing up!

There are such small details in these pages that represent larger messages, and I enjoyed spotting them each time I read through them: mentioning how Robert had to clean his toys out of the way so he could have a clean work space to bake; filling his day with creativity and baking, as opposed to TV or devices; the father being the one home with his son and helping him create the cake and attending his cake party; and the diversity in his party guests are all such small details that build layers of talking points and representation with children.

The illustrations themselves are also darling and so colourful and stimulating, something all children will enjoy flicking the pages through. There's so many little details drawn in as well, which is exciting for children to point out and discover, as well as the little nods to what the adult will pick up (namely, the dad's shirt! I loved that detail!).

Overall, this was a fun and silly book that children and adults can enjoy, And, I'm always a proponent for anything that encourages more cake!

Cute story about a boy who decides to have a cake party with his father. Invitations and prep is made, but the weather blows their designs away. Soon, all kinds of people start knocking at the door for a cake party! Super cute story about a boy and his dad spending time together.

Robert plans to have a cake party for his dad and dog. He spends the day preparing to make the best cake ever. This is a sweet book about a father and son that will be exciting for kids. I liked the creativity used in decorating the cake.

When I opened the book for the first time and quickly flicked through it, it never crossed my mind that in the evening I would spend hours reading it with my daughter. Robert and the World's Best Cake from
Anne-Catherine Behl, like any other children's book, didn't seem particularly appealing to me, perhaps a little more absurd than the others.

But as we began to flick through the pages with my daughter, I realizied how much more we managed to find the meaning in the seemingly meaningless. As a great didactic tool, the book contains many hidden topics that you can discover with your children.

For example, the very fact that Robert is painted only with his father is a sufficient basis for introducing the child into the structure of one family, a family with two parents, or only with single-parent, mom or dad. Considering the fact that Robert is home with his dad, making a cake allow us to talk about the tasks and responsibilities for each member of the family. The book is quite contemporary if we consider the fact that the mother was the one who took care of the children and the cooking not so log ago, still in some cultures. This book provides an excellent basis for encouraging equality between mother and father in regard of their intended house chores, an act which unfortunately does not exist in all countries in the world.
The addition of pets as part of the family is also a nice feat. The very fact that the dog also receives an invitation indicates that it is not just another toy, but a real member of the family.

Sometimes children are afraid to accept diversity. This book offers a great springboard so that you can discuss the fact that all people are different and unique, while watching their friends come for the cake, you can see the physical differences between them, make correlations with the real world of what we live. All different, but still similar in certain respects - they all want to taste the cake, and gathered under one roof. The mere addition of the policewoman is quite effective, as it gives the police officers the opportunity to discuss, as friends of the children, and not someone to be afraid of.

Definitely, after a few hours of looking at the book with my baby, this book exceeded all my expectations. The illustrations were exciting, and the language was appropriate for children.
Great job.

Robert is enjoying a quiet day with his dad when he decides to bake a cake. Not just any cake but a huge one to celebrate his dad. He creates invitations so others can come too but the wind blows them away. The two work hard on the cake. Dad makes the batter and Robert assembles and designs the cake. To their surprise, many people from friends to monsters arrive with invitations to celebrate. As expected, the book ends with Robert making more cake.
The text is a bit small for easy reading but the illustrations bring the story to life. The cartoon style drawings show the humor and creativity involved in this endeavor. Readers will appreciate the various cake styles created when everyone pitches in to make bigger cakes.

The illustrations in this book are so pleasing to look at! The story itself is so sweet and adorable. I think the lesson in here is sharing and allowing others to help us, which is easy to understand for young kids when they read this book.

Robert and the World's Best Cake was a very "sweet" story about a father and son who have the day off and decided to bake a cake for their friends. Robert and his dad thought they would be eating alone after the invitations flew off the balcony but little did they know, they would need more cake.

Read this to my kids today and they very much enjoyed the story and were ready to bake a cake for our friends and family. As a parent, I loved seeing this story, presumably about a single father, and the diversity of the characters in the book. Look forward to purchasing in the future.

Thanks NetGalley and North South for allowing me and my kids an early copy of this fun book.

5/5

Young Robert, his dad, and his dog Mopsi have the afternoon off, and that means there's time for a cake party! But what's a part without invitations? Robert starts by drawing up many illustrated invitations to the cake party at 3 pm, but most blow out the window and into the neighbourhood. Oh well, there's still two left for Dad and Mopsi. Better start baking! What could go wrong?

I love this adorable little story about a dad helping his son make an elaborate cake on a whim. I love the creativity of the story and the hilarious illustrations. (A towering cake, taller than the young boy, covered in toy cars. What's not to love?) I also love the fact that this story shows a positive father-son relationship in what could be part of a larger family, part of a split family, or just a father-son family. This will be a heartwarming touchstone to lots of kids with different types of families.

The reading level, as well as the font size and paragraph length on the page, suitable for group and partnered reading for kids in preschool and up, but probably more of a grade 1-2 level for self-guided reading. 5 stars, would recommend to all the parents and teachers in my life!

Cute story and characters. I could easily use this book to teach sequential order or cause and effect. When the invitations get lost, the party was still able to go on without a hitch!

I just fell in love with that gorgeous and adorable cover.

It is a day off for Robert and his father, so Robert decides to make a GIGANTIC (yes, that needs to be in caps) cake. Invitations were made and I was oohhing when they blew away, I was definitely hoping that meant something.

I was a bit curious about how dad made the batter. That is not how a cake batter is made, or how it works... (cake batter isn't something that just stays in its place, it is a bit fluid/sticky) so what is this going to be? In the end it looked like a cake.... but I am not sure if I would have eaten it given I saw the preparations and saw how it was build. It looked rather like clay. It was a disappointment as I was looking forward to father and son baking a cake. A real cake. And then turn it in a giant cake. I did love the decorations and how it really livened up the "cake". So that really was a disappointment for me. It was still fun, but I just want real cake.

I am glad that the invitations came back again, though I am sure there weren't that many. Oh well, it fits the story! And I was delighted to see all this happening and also how it all ended. That is such a fun solution.

I just need more and more of this author/illustrator's art, it is just absolutely gorgeous and I love her style so much. There are so many details, you can just keep looking at these pages and you keep finding new details.

All in all, a cute book with gorgeous art, fun family dynamics, the invitations part was cute, but the disappointment over the cake really lessened my enjoyment. 3 stars.

This was so delightful and the artwork was absolutely adorable. The colors were bright but not overly bright. The detail was phenomenal with the father having tattoos and he even knits. I believe any child would enjoy this book because who doesn't love cake and good story!

Thank you Netgalley for this opportunity to read this eARC.

Robert and his dad decided they wanted to bake a cake one day. Robert made some invitations for his dad and his pet. But a big burst of wind came through and the invitations blew away. The next day Robert and his dad baked a really big cake. They had just sat down to have a piece of Robert's big cake when the doorbell rang. Before long their hallway was full of friends that had found his blown away invitations. So Robert told his dad I think we need a bigger cake. The story's illustrations were cute and colorful. It is a sweet story about spending time with family and sharing with others.

This was a cute book about creativity and sharing. The illustrations were beautiful and bright, and the characters were lovable and relatable. This would be an engaging book for young readers with lots to look at on every page.

A cute little story about Robert and his dad making a cake. Has fun little fantastical elements included.

A joyful, if blindingly obvious, little read for joyful little readers. Our hero decides he is lacking cake, and wants to host a cake party with a humongous concoction for all his friends. That is, until all the invites get blown off his dad's balcony. So nobody will respond, and he'll be building this monstrosity on the kitchen floor – never putting it in the oven, mind – in vain. Won't he? The plot and visuals conspire to make you convinced the creator doesn't know how to make a cake, but books are a different matter. This is a very pleasant and whimsical one, and while it might not have that must-re-read quality, is certainly a success.
