I am a huge TJR fan and I really loved this book. Her writing is like no other. She creates such a vivid picture and characters that feel so real. The story was engrossing. |
Rising. First of all, I've been PUMPED for this one since I first heard of it. I binged a bunch of TJR just before I joined bookstagram last year and I just adore her. So when NetGalley approved me I might have squealed. I might have been at work when this might have happened. It's fine. I. Love. This. Book. I love it. I want to erase my memory, so I can read it again for the the first time. I want to kiss this book. I want to put it in a tiny tux and marry it and have it's little book babies. Too far? Probably too far. I love the Rivas. I loved getting to know each of them and I loved them and I loved all the characters, even the ones I didn't like. TJR writes such a beautiful story. I want to know what came next for everyone. ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ฃ๐ถ ๐๐ช๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ is long enough to tell the Rivas' story and short enough to keep me wanting more. I have nothing negative to say here and I'd give it ten stars if I could. Big fat ๐ด๐ด๐ด๐ด๐ด 5/5 from me and a huge THANK YOU @randomhouse @netgalley @tjenkinsreid for this early copy ๐๐๐ |
Taylor Jenkins Reid blew me away with Daisy Jones and the Six and has done it again in Malibu Rising! The Riva family history and back story is as complicated and intriguing as the story being told in the present day of the book! One of the best parts is that the plot is set in the 70-80s before cell phones and technology but regardless it feels relevant! The character development in this book was spot on! each chapter told from a different voice weaves the story together perfectly! Thank you so much for the advance copy! Canโt wait to see whatโs next for this author! |
Another astonishing work by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the focus on family and its meaningful themes were beautifully done and hard hitting emotionally. Malibu Rising centers around the Riva siblings, children of Mick Riva (who had his own chapter in Evelyn Hugo!), each of their individual lives and how it all spiraled in the span of twenty-four hours. Nina and Kit Riva were my favorites by the end. I related the most to Kit and adored her fiery spirit as well as her process of figuring herself out and who she wants to be. Nina on the other hand, her full story was the most devastating, the way she feels obligated to carry so much on her shoulders after everything thatโs happened to her family but also admired how much truly she cares for her loved ones to a huge extent. It was Ninaโs overall character arc that genuinely breathtaking and intriguing to see from beginning to end especially the development of her inner thoughts and mindset on life. I enjoyed Jay and Hudโs arcs and their close brother bond as well but personally did not resonate with them on the emotional sense as I did with Nina and Kit. I did wish the second half of the book still focused around the siblings instead of veering off a bit all over the place with numerous different perspectives changing every few pages with the people who were at the party. I guess it did add a bit of that flair, interesting drama, and comedy to the story, but it felt detached lacking that depth that the first half of the book had with telling each of the siblingsโ stories, feelings, their childhoods and along with their parentsโ backstories. It was part one and about the last 5 percent of the book that really hit and had me a sobbing mess with the stunning dialogue between the siblings and the completion of character arcs. Overall, I loved this book truly and reading a book set in Socal was captivating to me. Fans of TJR will find Malibu Rising a quite satisfying and of course, heart shattering and healing read! |
As a big fan of TJR's, I couldn't wait to read Malibu Rising! The cross-over of characters from other novels is a fun concept and makes the reader feel like they're actually part of this world. The hour by hour sequence of the book keeps the pace moving and conjures this image of a ticking clock to something big. I was a bit nervous reading as we inched closer and closer to the infamous Riva party and then once it got started it just kept growing! The beginning was a bit slow but as soon as the party gets underway it does pick up. I wish the ending had been longer though as I was left wanting more on that side of the book to explain a few of the loose ends that were left out there. If I can't have a longer ending though, I'll take a second book to tie out the new characters and events that are introduced! |
So this is my first introduction to the authorโs books and I cannot wait to read her other ones! The writing is light, funny and entertaining; the characters are well developed, the scenery on the water and driving on the Pacific Coast Highway sounds beautiful and calming. The Riva siblings are Nina, the surfer and model; her brothers, Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other his renowned photographer; and Kit, the adored baby of the family. As if that picture-perfect family isn't enough, their father is Mick Riva, the legendary singer. Each have their own flaws and perception of life really. Nina throws her annual end of the summer party, itโs the party to be at, and everyone is having a blast! Things go awry and by morning the mansion is burned to the ground, but how and why? Secrets come out and the emotions are just gushing out. Thank you to the author, Ballantine Books, and NetGalley for an ebook arc. This is my honest review. |
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy! Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Read were two of my absolute favorite reads of 2020. I have a feeling that Malibu Rising will be one of my favorite reads of 2021. The storytelling was phenomenal - weaving in and out of both the past and present of all the characters. The main story (the one you will become completely invested in!) centers around the Riva family - Mick, June, Nina, Jay, Hud and Kit. Malibu Rising is simply a book that you can't put down - an emotional family story centered around Malibu and a crazy twelve hour party! Loved it!! |
I did not like this book. Stereotypical trash people doing stereotypically trashy things. No redeeming qualities to be found in any of the characters except Nina, the martyr, who was a cookie cutter oldest sibling. The rest of the book is three pages describing someoneโs pink dress or their topsider loafers or introducing a character that doesnโt appear again in the rest of the story. Sorry to be so honest but...I am really surprised the person who wrote Evelyn Hugo wrote this. Evelyn Hugo was one of the best books I read last year. Sorry To TJR, I swear I still love her. Not every book is for everyone and I am sure many people will love this even though it wasnโt for me. |

Malibu Rising By: Taylor Jenkins Reid "Malibu: August 1983. Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of 24 hours, their lives will change forever. Secrets arise, destruction ensues, and the mansion goes up in flames." Throughout this story we follow multiple points of view. We follow the famous Riva siblings in the present, but we also alter back to the past and experience how the Riva name began. We follow the love story of Mick and June Riva and the successes and tribulations of their marriage. We also are presented with multiple small side characters at the infamous party to further set the scene of the famous Riva party. TJR has a talent for writing compelling characters. Her characters are intricate and as a reader, I quickly became submersed into this story and invested in the characters. Her characters leave an impacting impression, leaving the reader feeling anger, sadness, disappointment, disbelief, hope and resilience. I was so impressed by the strength of some of these characters, how no matter the obstacles ahead, the Riva children survived. I also really enjoy how TJR incorporates other novel characters into her books, for example Evelyn Hugo and her relationship with Mick Riva. Something to consider, there are so many characters to keep track of in this novel, which I could see causing confusion. It will be up to each reader to determine if the small side characters benefited the story or if the reader would have preferred more focus on the Rivas. At its core, this book is a character driven plot. It is about characters facing and overcoming hardships, it's about finding yourself and rising above. I would absolutely recommend! I am so thankful to have received this ARC. Thank you Netgalley, TJR, and Random House Publishing Group for my gifted copy! |
I've enjoyed all of the Taylor Jenkins Reid books I have read and I was blown away by Malibu Rising. I absolutely loved it and it is dethroning Daisy Jones & the Six as my favorite book by TJR. I loved the way the story flowed over the two time periods, the mid-1950's when Mick Riva met June, through the years that followed when they had their children, Nina, Jay, Hud and Kit, to the story in 1983 told over 24 hours as Nina hosts her yearly party. I enjoyed getting to know each of the Riva siblings, what made them who they were, what they were learning about themselves and how through it all they would always be there for each other. All of the characters you meet along the way, while they might seem minor when you first read about them, they help in building the story. Without giving anything away, I truly loved the ending of the book and the transformation of each of the Riva siblings. This will definitely be one of my favorite books of 2021. The writing was absolutely beautiful and at times emotional. The picture TJR paints on each page is so vivid that you feel like you are cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway with the Riva siblings, surfing alongside them in the Pacific Ocean and a guest at Nina's party. |
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Nina's father was a famous musician who was rarely home. Nina was a model and surfer who ex husband left her for another tennis player. Every year in August she throws a party for several hundred people. Some of Nina's family are holding on to some secrets. This book was well written. |
Disclaimer:I got this ARC in exchange for an honest review on @NetGalley! I loved reading about the Rivas kids and this is my first Taylor Jenkins Reid book! I need to read Daisy Jones and the Six next. But OMG - I think I found a new favorite author!! Kitt's definitely my favorite Rivas kid and I adored reading about her self-discovery journey. |
I will read anything written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. So, obviously, when I found out that Malibu Rising was due to be published in May 2021, I had to request a copy. I was shocked and ecstatic that I received a review copy of this book. I obviously had to bump it up on my TBR list and started it as soon as it downloaded! The bar was set high for TJR as her other books are some of my favorites of all time. Malibu Rising exceeded my expectations and it will join the others as one of my all-time favorites! First, the cover is beautiful. The story would be fantastic without it but still wanted to include my appreciation of an eye-catching cover. At first, I thought the multiple POVs and dual timelines would be really confusing, but itโs incredibly well written and surprisingly easy to follow. The Riva family has NOT had it easy. Whether itโs June and Mickโs heartbreaking love story, Ninaโs sacrifice of her own life for her siblings, Jayโs health issues, Hudโs big secret, or Kit finding her own identity - all of it was equally as intriguing and a page-turner. All of their stories were so well written and I was rooting for all of them. By the end, I just felt a true reminder of how to be there for the people you love without losing yourself. Highly recommend this one - especially to other TJR fans! ๐๐๐๐๐ |
I wanted to love this book. Part of me does but most of me doesnโt. I loved the tie in to Evelyn Hugo...references to that era and book were great. I struggled to identify and love the main characters. It felt like there was too much going on but not a lot of depth behind them. Maybe Iโm just holding TJR in too high of regard because some of my fave books are from her. I wanted this to knock my socks off. It wasnโt bad at all, it just wasnโt wow! |

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid transported me to sunny California! Her descriptive writing was captivating and had me quickly turning the pages. I loved the characters and their development throughout the story. I would highly recommend Malibu Rising. Thank you Net Galley and Ballantine Books for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. |
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an engaging novel that will stick with you long after you finish the last page. That said, when I read the synopsis for Malibu Rising, I didnโt want to set my expectations too high. I thought it was going to be one of those stories thatโs just all about rich, famous kids and their problems. Maybe even a bit too superficial for my taste. Whew, I was off-base with that. Yes, the siblings are famous, due to their musician father and their own talents, but there is so much more going on in this story. I should have known that Taylor would find a way to make this subject matter so heartfelt and impactful. Malibu Rising will be another big hit. Oftentimes when writers feature siblings as the main feature of the storyโitโs very fragmented and complicated. Which makes sense as siblings donโt always get along as easily as parents hope. But I think this is one of the first ones Iโve read in a while where the siblings are such a tight-knit pack. I absolutely adored the different relationships among these four siblings and feel that Taylor fleshed out each as distinct and interesting. This is another fantastic book from my Taylor Jenkins Reid and will be the talk of the summer reading season. My review and book club questions will publish on BookClubChat.com on April 20. |
I loved this book! I wasnโt expecting the links to Evelyn Hugo but that made me love it even more! What a great family drama. TJR did a fantastic job alternating between the love story of Mick and June and the day of the party. I found myself looking forward to both parts because I was that invested in their individual stories. Such a fantastic read! |
TAYLOR JENKINS REID HAD NO RIGHT TO GO THIS HARD BUT SHE DID IT ANYWAY AND I'M STOKED! โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I was going to wait till closer to release date to post but I need to hype you up for May 25, 2021. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ In Malibu Rising, we follow the four Riva siblings (remember โGullible Mick Rivaโ from Evelyn Hugo?!) in the hours leading up to and during their annual end of the summer party of 1983. The town is looking forward to it, unlike Nina who doesnโt enjoy the attention. Her brother Hud is dreading it, too, as he has a secret to spill. Jay is only concerned about a girl he invited, while Kit doesnโt ever mention her secret guest. The star-studded party will get out of control by midnight and by morning, the mansion will be up in flames. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ What a perfect beach read. This book was so atmospheric that is has me in a summer mindset in the middle of January! In my opinion, Reid has killed it yet again with her beautiful writing and emotional & intricate relationships among characters. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I donโt normally cling to a story that happens over the span of 24 hours, but between the absolute chaos that ensued at this wild party and the flashbacks of Mick, June (the Rivaโs mother), and the Riva kids, I devoured this. There is enough drama, heartbreak, breakdowns, and makeups to last a lifetime in this book and I LOVED IT ALL. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I will say, this book does have quite a few characters. HOWEVER, I think Reid does an amazing job at introducing these fun little side characters that actually enhance the storytelling. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I donโt know how I was accepted to read this beautiful novel early, but Iโm so glad I was (TY SM NET GALLEY & PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE). This book was incredible and I didnโt want it to end. This wasnโt Daisy Jones & this wasnโt Evelyn Hugo, but I loved it just as much - FIVE STAR โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธREAD |
This book was an incredibly fast read. TJR always pulls you into the story within the first few pages, and this book was no exception. I loved the flashbacks from all of the character's lives so that you could see their storied pasts. I also loved the sibling relationships that the Riva kids shared. The only negative thing was that the ending seemed a bit rushed. |
