A complex inside portrayal of the dark side of Hollywood whether it be the starlets or athletes and his it impacted the Riva family. Their only escape wad surfing and the joy they found in the water. The destruction of Nina and Brandon's home coupled with the fire embodied the destruction of relationships whether it be their marriage or the relationship the children had with their father. Hud, Jay, Nina and Kit created their own family and were stronger because of it. I also enjoyed how it was broken out by hour.

Malibu Rising follows a day in the life of the four Riva kids, children of Mick Riva a famous singer & notably absent dad, and this day is a special day: the annual Riva party.

TJR paints a perfect picture of 1980’s Malibu, California surf culture which lingers through the whole story in a hazy glow of sunshine, high cut swim suits and rock hard abs.

This was the right book at the right time for me and I consumed it in a day. At the heart of the story is this family unit & their interactions, sprinkled with love stories and wild 80’s party antics. The first half was slow (but entertaining) burn with flashbacks to Mick & June’s love story and a hint into each of the Riva children’s’ individual experiences. The second half was a quick burn: the actual party. It’s wild, there’s drama and all the build ups really peak.

It was a very satisfying read all around. I loved it.

An excellent book about family. An excellent book about identifying how much that family affects one’s identity. Good characterization but not so deep so as to become a interpersonal drama. This book would be a perfect quick weekend read for anyone vaguely (or seriously) interested in a 1980s fiction narrative. In California. With surfing. And combed back bangs. Overall it read like a great tv show series, and I do feel it would adapt well to the screen. That said, it will appeal to readers who like quick shifts in both character focus and time line.

But let me be clear: this is not as good as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. So far that is TJR’s best work in my opinion.

A huge thank you to Ballantine Books as well as NetGalley for the opportunity to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This was my first ARC that I've ever received and I'm so honored that it was for this book!

I have read most of TJR's other books and have really liked them all, but there was something about "Malibu Rising" that really spoke to me. It reminded me of "Daisy Jones" (which I loved but not nearly as much as this book), but I feel that it was just taken to the next level in terms of the plot and character development. She does a fascinating job of creating such authentic characters and shaping such strong relationships between them. The Riva's story felt so easy to connect to (although I can't relate to it whatsoever) because of how much information we were given about them. It kept me on my toes the entire time I was reading.

I also love how this book took place essentially over a single day yet also how it alternated to the part of it as well. It was truly so clever the way it was written. And on top of that it was so emotional and had a lot of lessons to share about family/parenting, love, and relationships which are my kind of books! The only thing that I craved a little more about was the aftermath of the ending...so maybe that means a sequel?! Overall, "Malibu Rising" was definitely my favorite book of hers to date. I will be thinking about this one for a long time and cannot wait to recommend it to everyone I know as soon as it comes out!

Yes! Everything about this book. This book engaged me from the first chapter. The characters had depth and created a story I couldn’t put down. I wanted to be a part of the Riva family. The ARC of this is the best thing to happen In 2020 and is a must read for 2021

I have loved almost everything that TJR has written, with the notable exception of Daisy Jones (I realize I am in the minority here), so I was very nervous abut this one. TJR's ability to seamlessly go from past to present is top notch, and enjoyed the setting of the 80s. I loved the Riva kids and their interwoven storylines, but I could've cared less about the other party attendees. I flew through this one to see what would happen which is always the sign of a good novel.

I received an electronic copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I've read all of TJR's books...I've loved them all, but I think we can all agree that Evelyn and Daisy (both past 5 stars for me) are in a league of their own amongst her other books. In my humble opinion, the Riva kids may transcend my beloved Evelyn & Daisy. If I could give more than 5 stars on Goodreads, I would. My first thought after I finished the book was that I wish I could go back to the beginning and read it again for the first time - it was something truly special.

And the crazy thing is...I can't pin point what it is about her writing that makes me feel this way. Maybe it was the cast of characters you couldn't help root for, some I had hatred in my heart on behalf of them, some I cried for, others I wanted to hug and some I wanted to slap...and then slap again. The world that TJR creates, this time in Malibu, is so vivid you swear you can feel the salty air in your hair and smell the fried clams at Pacific Fish.

Normally I loathe a book with a lot of characters - this one had probably the most that I've ever read, but it worked. She wove in main players and folks you met once and didn't really hear about again and somehow...it worked. I loved seeing the snippets of the random surfers at the party, the waitress going out with a bang before moving back to Oregon and of course the Riva siblings and their fierce love and protectiveness over one another. TJR exposed the raw reality that not all families are the nuclear unit, yet they work, we love and we come together as whatever family means to us to be the best unit we can, together.

I could go on and on -but I'll just recommend that you read this. Pick it up on its publish date of 5/25/21 and devour it, love it and rave about it - I just know you will, because as with Evelyn and Daisy, this book was magic.

Thank you, seems so trivial and not big enough, but THANK YOU to Netgalley and Random House – Ballantine for this ARC. I'm a child and can't wait to post this, but will be reposting again near the pub date in May 2021.

TJR - you are a master at what you do. Thank you for sharing your work with the world!

At its heart this book is about a party that gets out of hand. Have you ever attended one? In my college years there was a moving out party at our 10th Street house that was almost famous, but nothing like this Hollywood A-LIst party of the year. In the 80's Nina Riva's annual party at her Malibu beach house is talked about all year. You never knew who you might meet. There were no invites. If you knew the address you were invited.

Nina Riva is an 80's famous surfer and model. Although she is the daughter of the singer Mick Riva, she has accomplished everything in life on her own. Her siblings Jay, Hud, and Kit are her responsibilty and she loves them and also resents that they have been left to her. Taylor Jenkins Reid once again has done her research for this book. The story begins with Mick and June in the 60's and moves into the 80's with description that goes well beyond mentioning Tab and shoulder pads. You get to understand and visualize the main characters from the first chapters.

I loved this book and gobbled it down like Christmas dinner. After a long reading slump, I finished this book in 2 days. It had the feel of Daisy Jones and the Six in that I felt like I needed to go to Wikipedia to find out more about Mick and Nina as if they really existed. There are many characters and situations introduced throughout the party scenes. It reminded me of the party in Breakfast at Tiffanys, where all the little pieces worked together to create the overall mood and meaning of the party. Don't be distracted by them, keep your focus on the main characters.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has an incredible talent for writing fiction that seems so real, you can’t help but look up the characters on the internet - just to make sure they don’t actually exist. She creates complex narratives that show humanity in deeply flawed characters. Her novels feel more realistic (and entertaining) than reality television.
This novel tells the story of four famous siblings and their famous annual party. Though the novel is centered on Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit Riva, the author also gives us a glimpse into the lives of other partygoers, some famous and some not, giving the reader a wide range of perspectives on the same events.
My favorite things about this book: Hud and Kit, deep character development, scenery of Malibu, focus on family, and the book’s format - which switched back and forth between the Riva parent’s love story and an hour-by-hour description of the events on the day of the big party.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy!

arc provided by netgalley for an honest review

This story is set in Malibu and has two main storylines it follows, the Riva family history coming from the 50’s and the 24 hour window concerning the annual Riva party from 1983.

The main characters are:
- Mick: the unfaithful husband, absent father, and famous rock star
- June: the resilient mother who battled all of her and her families demons
- Nina: the supermodel super who sacrificed everything for her siblings and took up the parent role when her family had no one else
- Jay: famous surfer who likes to live more stress free but has his own secret
- Hud: the surfer photographer (who works with his brother a lot) and is hiding a very big secret from Jay
- Kit: the youngest of the family and only just now started discovering herself, she has invited a secret guest to their party that maybe not everyone will appreciate

The Riva kids have constantly hidden their struggles beginning from their parents’ crumbling marriage, to a lack of parental figures, to their rise to stardom but one thing they have all had in common was the annual party that they all enjoy going to. As we read more, we find that all of the Riva children have their own secrets that they’re trying to tackle and it’s all going to collide during this explosive party. All four have grown up to be very independent adults stemming from their childhood and yet remain fiercely loyal and protective to one another. But their loyalties may start crumbling once secrets start unravelling.

This was a fairly quick and easy read that gave me a break from the books I typically read. Unlike most rich family books, we see that they did not start off rich and made so any sacrifices so that they could stay afloat. We are given a very detailed history of not just their childhood but their parents’ toxic history which really grasped my attention.

Overall, I did enjoy this book but there were so many POVs which made the story harder to follow along to especially since we would get a very detailed history about some characters and then the next 4 chapters would be four vastly different POVs that you will not remember until they appear the next time. The disconnection between the POVs was what caused me to drop my rating, they did not flow very well for me. I ended up looking forward to two of the main POVs and became disinterested in many of the other pots due to that lack of flow.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of books centred around children having to survive on their own or single mothers trying to keep their family afloat. I think fans of Julian Blackthorn would like this book particularly Nina, who takes on the parent role much like how Julian did.

warnings: suicide, alcoholism

4.5 stars! Taylor Jenkins Reid continues to be a must-read author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well. I loved how the dual storylines went back and forth between hour-by-hour to the earlier years. Her characters always feel so real and relatable (and likeable) amidst all the family drama. Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

Malibu Rising

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What makes a book five stars? For me it is falling for the characters, almost believing you know them in real life, wanting the book to never end.... I have read every book written by Taylor Jenkins Reid and she never disappoints. Malibu Rising takes you back in time told from two different time periods. Mick Riva is a star!! He’s married to June but he has a very big problem staying faithful. We go back in time and read about their love/hate story the hard lives they lived together and separate. I fell deeply for their four children. Nina -big sis, supermodel- always in charge and found out her husband is a cheater, Jay -hot surfer with a secret, Hud - hot photographer with a bigger secret and Kitt little sis who is a bit lost...At times my heart broke for them caught in the cross fires. I loved their bonding as siblings and as surfers!

I have to admit I loved that most of this book takes place in the 80’s!! The hair, outfits and lingo, it was really fun to reminisce and picture in my mind. Nina has a big blow out party every year - there is no invite if you know her address then you are invited. By the end of party everything will change!

Sending a sincere thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine books for an advanced copy of Malibu Rising for my honest review! Can’t wait to see what comes next!!

A TRJ novel is exactly what I needed to get out of a reading slump. This is now the third I've read and I've loved all of them - she has such a special way of immersing you into the story.

Malibu Rising was simply engrossing, start to finish. The culture and setting was intriguing, and as usual, I was drawn to the characters immediately. Each character has their own flair and I love how we see them evolve. All the feels from this multigenerational family drama! A big 5.

Thanks to Random House - Ballantine and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.

This book was a bit different from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six. However, I loved it all the same. Taylor Jenkins Reid's writing style will always amaze me. Riva's story was one I needed to hear. I absolutely adored all the different characters and their individual stories. The entire book was enchanting, I couldn't put it down while I was reading it. I also enjoyed all the different perspectives from all the characters and I admired the family aspects of the story. This was such an unbelievable read. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a genius.

Malibu Rising follows a family through two generations and through the night their world catches on fire. I truly loved reading this book. Anything Taylor Jenkins Reid writes is gold. Her writing is so beautiful. The story is so well written, and she juggles the multiple timeline beautifully. I would definitely recommend to friends and family.

This is will one of my favorite books of 2021 (publishes May 2021). READ THIS BOOK!

Taylor Jenkins Reid is getting better and better. I liked The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, loved Daisy Jones and The Six (let's not discuss her older and less brilliant books), and she took what she does best and wrote this book. She set it in a family with a famous, but absent, singer father (think Mick Jagger), and how the four children grow up and function as young adults in a fame adjacent world. The kids are survivors and gifted in their own passions (surfing, modeling, photography). All comes to a head at their annual party at the eldest daughter's house in Malibu. This book is set in the 80's and goes back and forth to the 50's when the parents meet. It has vibrant characters and a touch of fictional celebrity that Reid has become known for. Reread her other two books while you wait, but definitely do not miss this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for the advance copy. One of my favorite reads of the year.

Wow. Taylor Jenkins Reid is so incredibly talented. I LOVED Daisy Jones and really liked Evelyn Hugo, so I freaked out when I was approved on Netgalley to read her newest book, Malibu Rising. And holy cow... she is a master storyteller and once again blew me away.

This story follows siblings Nina, Jay, Hud and Kit as they prepare to throw their annual summer party. Their father is famous singer Mick Rivas (one of Evelyn Hugo's husbands in her previous book!) who abandoned them and their mother when they were little. TJR does an incredible job of portraying how difficult it was for the kids and their mama to live their lives without him, while watching him carry on in life being successful and womanizing. This is also a fictional backstory on how one of the Malibu fires started in the 80's and the way it all tied together at the end was so perfect.

This novel was amazing. The relationship between the four siblings was heartwarming and the hero of the story is the oldest sibling, Nina, who I adored and cheered for throughout the book. I felt like I was on the beach with all of the Rivas kids and I loved the breezy, laid back California setting.

This comes out May 25th and you are going to love it. Another fantastic read by Taylor Jenkins Reid! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

You guys Taylor Jenkins Reid is such an amazing writer! I think we all know this but she just keeps these amazing books coming.

This book is about the Riva family and all the hurt they endure. And it's a lot. It is about siblings and damaged parents.

I cried pretty hard at one point so grab your tissues when you read this one.

I don't want to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. Just that this one is going to be a top book of 2021. I already have mine pre-ordered and you should probably go ahead and pre-order it as well because you're not going to want to miss out on this one.

4.5/5 stars

What an incredible story about love, loss, fame, parenthood, family, and more importantly what it means to be resilient in the face of adversity.

In Malibu Rising, we get to see a character return from Evelyn Hugo’s world, Mick Riva, the superstar singer who marries Evelyn one adventurous Vegas night.  Young Riva, in Malibu Rising, meets a beautiful girl-next-door woman called June whom he woos and marries.  Subsequently, Mick begins to travel and tour as his singing career takes off.  When June, now with two children, discovers that Mick has been unfaithful to her on numerous occasions, she asks him to leave for good.  The story proceeds by giving us an in depth look at the lives of these Riva children - who eventually become four; one half brother whom June takes in after he is basically left on her doorstep, and a baby girl, Katherine, who is born after Mick returns a second time to attempt and live a simple kind of life with June.

Although the story heavily involves Mick and his past, it is ultimately the story of his children, about family and how the Riva’s are able to overcome hardship after their father abandons them for good.

What truly hit home for me was the internalized hope that each one of Mick’s children possessed: that perhaps one day Mick would return and embrace each one of his children while telling them he loves them and that they were always worthy of his love despite his abandonment.  Taylor Jenkins Reid weaves a poignant story about what it means to be a family and the imperfection and beauty of what parenthood  can be. The story incorporates so much of what we love about a Taylor Jenkins Reid novel: the repercussions of fame and old Hollywood but always with such a depth in the humanity of the characters she writes about. At the finality of the journey of each of her novels we find ourselves  feeling so immersed in that world that it is difficult to leave it.

I can’t wait for Malibu Rising ‘s release May 2021!!

Thank you so much to Random House Publishing Group- Ballantine as well as NetGalley for the opportunity to read this eARC.
