I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. Though dry at times I found this book well written.

The Black Lions of Flanders is the first installment from the King's Germans series by Dominic Fielder. I loved it and look forward to book two. Five stars.

This book is set in Flanders during the pre-Napoleonic period, and cleverly describes the stories behind various protagonists. These range from English, Dutch, Hanoverian, and French soldiers. There are engaging personalities on all sides.
The author, Dominic Fielder, has clearly undertaken a massive amount of research into the conflict taking place at this time. The descriptions of the various soldiers, their units, uniforms, equipment, and various dispositions are extremely interesting from the military history perspective.
Unfortunately, through no fault of the author, I found it challenging to keep track of the many players and the respective units that they were attached to. As the book progressed I found it easier to keep track of the individuals.
I am looking forward to the follow-on books.

A beautiful written story set in a little explored period of the Napoleonic wars. Fantastically researched and fleshed out. Well balanced action and intrigue. I especially liked that chapters reading more like diary entries with the corresponding locations and dates. You may actually find yourself siding with those allies fighting to stop the French Revolution!

While it is set in the Napoleonic wars era I don't remember Napoleon even being mentioned, a great read for lovers of historical military fiction.

I'll definitely be picking up further books in the series.
