As a practicing Catholic I was curious to see what Carroll has to say regarding the Church. As an attorney, I figured the author might attempt to make a 'case' of the many perceived ills that infect the institution and his view of the remedial efforts needed to restore it to good health for its legion of followers.

Indeed he does, and his points throughout are researched and surely valid. My hesitation is not so much with the message, but the tone of the overall text. Perhaps it is just my sensitivity on a topic so personal to me, but the language reads too harshly for my taste. Indeed as though the author is delivering some type of impassioned (and elongated) closing argument to an unidentifiable (single reader) jury.

For a topic so intimate to me, a more objective tone would be a bit more palatable on the intake.

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
