I started with and have enjoyed this author's Inferno Rising series, which is a spin off series from the Fire's Edge series. I've been meaning to to read the original series but with life getting in the way I have just not had time. This is book 5 in that series. Let me start by staying that although it would be helpful to have read previous books in Fire's Edge series, it is not necessary to enjoy this book. I do find myself wanting to know more about other characters and some of the background, so I still intend to go back and start from the beginning. But this book had great characters and great plot and stands just fine on its own.

Sometimes with a book, I love the hero or the heroine. With this book, I loved them both. Levi was the protective mate and he filled that role perfectly without being overbearing and annoying. Lyndi was a strong female but felt like people judged her as less because she was a rare female born dragon and would never be a dragon male's true fated mate, and she couldn't have children. Levi and Lyndi have been at odds for about 200 years of avoiding their feelings, though their inner dragons have known all along they were meant to be together.

This story was well paced with an engaging plot. The main couple was the focus but other events were also important and interesting, and the character interactions really made you feel like this team of dragons was a family. I found myself terribly sad at one point, because I felt so connected to the characters in this book. The bad guy was well thought out, and the reader is given several scenes from his POV to see his motivations, and as one of the characters pointed out, he had reasons for his actions, so it was not just a cookie cutter one size fits all bad guy. (Although he was quite the jerk.)

So now I definitely have to go back and read the previous books while I await Abigail Owen's next release, which I sincerely hope will be sooner rather than later. These books leave you wanting for more.

Levi and Lyndi have know each other for a very long time. When they first meet it's not what it seems. Both shun each other. Lyndi is a female born dragon and will never have a soul mate or have children. She has decided to raise the orphan dragons and they are her life. Eventually Levi is called back to his King to fight in the war. When this happen both find they can not longer fight the chemistry between them. It was on fire LOL The problem is Lyndi knows that if she stays with Levi he will leave someday for his true mate. I love this world the author has created. I love the way the team of dragons work together and even and play together. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. These books are so full of action and you won't want to put it down once you pick it up.

Rating 4.5/5

Annoyingly I had a bit of a dough ball moment and when this book popped up I got it without reading the description thinking it was the next book in the Abigail Owen series that I am two books into, it is not. Then I found out that it is the latest book in another of her series and is also the four book in and I was torn because I really don’t like reading books halfway through a series as there’s always a few things you miss. Then I completely disregarded my thoughts on the fact that I don’t usually read out of order and did it anyway and I’m so glad that I did.

I was so in the mood for this kind of book, yes it’s a romance but as I am coming to find with the books from this author it is also a lot of action and adventure and I needed this perfect blend of escapism. Even though I have started with the fourth book in the series and there were a few hints to things that had happened before I didn’t feel like I needed to have read the other books in the series to follow what was happening in this one. Although I definitely want to go back and start from the beginning because it sure sounded like some interesting storylines, plus I enjoy getting the build-up of rapport from the other characters, I felt like I was expecting to feel it even though I’ve not come across these characters before.

Lyndi and Levi were great I feel like there was probably a lot of groundwork in the previous books that I probably missed out on because things start to happen very quickly in this book but actually I still found their chemistry really believable without it. I liked that they were both denying each other because they were trying to protect each other and that they were both very strong characters. I loved that Lyndi was a force to be reckoned with but that she also had such a big heart and Levi was a brilliant mix of loyal, caring and brooding.

I will admit to a piqued interest in this book because once I realised that Lyndi was a female dragon I knew it was going to turn a lot of the “rules” about female dragons in this world on its head and I was not disappointed. I also liked that the groups were a mix of dragons from the different coloured clans and that they created a safe space for the orphan dragons, it’s nice to see a fantasy world that can evolve.

I’m excited to see what the impact of some of the revelations in this book has in the other series and I’m hoping that I can get through the first three books before the next book in this series comes out, because the little tease at the end makes me want to know more.

If you are looking for a fun and entertaining book filled with action, some sneaky political dealings, a family fighting for each other and of course a bit of romance then this is the book for you.

Lyndi is a female dragon shifter and females are sterile so her mating would usually be political because she is a cousin of the High King. But the High King is a nice guy and hasn't made her mate anyone. As soon as Lyndi meets Levi though, she feels something for him right away but she misinterprets how he acts around her at first and pushes him away every chance she gets for 200 years.

Levi meets Lyndi when she and her brother comes to help his clan. He knows pretty much right away that she is his mate but because of the way he acts towards her, she thinks he doesn't like her when he's really just trying to hold his dragon in check.

Neither one has any idea that the other feels the same way about them and Lyndi being sterile and not being able to mate him the way a human female would makes her believe that she's not good enough for him anyway. It isn't until he gets called back to his clan and a male dragon shifter from another clan comes to claim Lyndi, that they both let their feelings show. At that point there was no way that they were letting each other go, but that's also when all sorts of things get in their way and it looks like there will be a war or at the very least a lot of trouble with other clans and maybe even Levi's gold clan leader.

I really liked the orphan dragon shifters that Lyndi has taken in and cares for and how much they care about her. There were a few surprises and a lot of great action scenes. So much has happened in this series and even more happens in this book. I cannot wait for Rune's book and it looks like his will be the next book in this series and I'm so looking forward to it. I always enjoy the books in this series and that's what keeps me coming back. All I can say is if you haven't started reading this and you like PNR, you really need to pick up the first book and start reading it.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dragon shifter, Levi Rowtag is the Beta of the team of enforcers. They use the cover of being a team of firefighters. That way they can find troubled dragons before too much damage is done. Unfortunately there is another team of dragons that are out to cause a lot of problems.
Lyndi Chandali is a rare female born dragon. She knows because of her bloodline she will get an arranged mating. All female born dragons are sterile so there is no other way she will ever have a mate.
This is an exciting and sexy paranormal romance that has wonderful characters and lots of great battles. It is part of a series but can easily be read on it's own. It will make you want to read all of them.
I loved it.

Finally! Finally, Lindy & Levi get their HEA! As much as I enjoyed the smoldering looks & snarkiness, these two deserved to find their happiness. And I’m really glad they found it together. All I can say about this book is WOW! I mean WOW WOW WOW DAMN WOW! This book was probably my favorite of this series – although I really loved the prequel to this series, The Mate.

There was so very much going on in this book that I can’t really say a lot without spoiling something (so I won’t). There are so many fascinating story lines that arc from the previous books in this series as well as from the Inferno Rising series since all the books are set in the same world. And what a fantastic ever-changing, magical world this is! It is so awe-inspiring to read and discover how this author weaves her tales between each character – whether they are human, phoenix, dragon or other shifter – and through the series set in these worlds she has created.

[This is from my review for the second book in the Inferno Rising series, The Blood King, but it applies here as well.] Books like this are the reason I love to read. There are some authors who are so adept at worldbuilding that opening their books and beginning to read transports you (back) into this magical place they have created. A world that sparks your imagination and allows you to see and feel the book come alive as you devour the pages. This author, with the Inferno Rising and Fire’s Edge series’, has created a world like this. A world where dragons (and bears and wolves) are real. Where they live and work alongside humans without us ever knowing, unless we are destined to become important to them. Where something as enchanting as mythical as a Phoenix can hide in plain sight, never revealing themselves for fear of losing their freedom or worse, their life. Where the strings of Fate wind between so many lives and bring surprises at every turn.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book through Netgalley and Entangled Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am really enjoying this author and most particularly this series. I will admit to a touch of disappointment that this book was not the story of the next Phoenix sister but it was a nice interlude.
We've met the protagonists in this story earlier but I have to admit neither of them made a deep impression on me personally. Orphaned dragon children are abandoned by their clans but Lyndi who is a sterile female dragon adopts these children and gives them the tools to develop and grow to be contributing members of their society. Levi of course has smoldered in silence and from afar but things come to a head when looming war between the clans particularly the North American enforcers forces Lyndi to take her fledglings and flee with Levi as her guard.
This is an interesting story with some dramatic events that I believe will shape the future of this series.

This is an amazing world and author Abigail. Owen does a great job of drawing you into it and into the lives of the characters she has created. As you are pulled in by the characters - the drama and danger will keep you there.

The Protector is the latest book in the Fire's Edge series of Dragon shifters. The series does contain an overall story arc but each book can be enjoyed easily individually. Lyndi Chandali is a female born dragon shifter, a designation that means she is sterile and will never find love among the dragon shifting community or so she thinks. Levi Rowtag is the Beta among his enforcer team and as soon as he sets eyes on Lyndi his dragon wants her. Fighting their attraction for years, Levi's finally being called home and with the deadline looming he finally goes after what he wants. Steamy, romantic, and action packed, this story is everything you want in paranormal romance. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.

such a great story. I didn't want to put it down. I loved these characters. They are larger than life and not just because they can shift to dragons! Levi has more patients than any dragon we've met. but he's persistent and cunning. Lyndi doesn't stand a chance when a male scents his mate. He doesn't take no for an answer

In this one we see Lyndi takes us into this along with Levi. Doing what she can for orphans is how she lives besides butting heads with Levi. War is about though so they have enemies coming for her. On top of that Levi has to make some tough decisions. I know I was on the edge too because I wanted to see them mate. You are caught up in this but becareful fire does burn in this one.

While I have most the previous Fire’s Edge books on my ipad. Not read them all yet. But The Protector can be read as a standalone. Didn’t take me much to catch up with what was going on. If I’d read them in order probably been better. Be that as it may, I was caught up in the story from the first couple of pages. I loved the author’s exciting world of interconnecting stories with romance that sizzles right of the page, nonstop action, and I’ve found myself laughing out loud at the humor. Embarrassing when there are others in the room. There are twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Protector is a romance between Lyndi, a female born dragon who figured a loving mate wasn’t in the cards for her and Levi, a warrior who wanted her but thought he could never have her. Be careful what you wish for dragons. No spoiler here. Read the book. I highly recommend The Protector and can’t wait for the next Fire’s Edge Book.

That was awesome! Knowing Levi and Lindy from the previous books makes there story more intense. This book had me from page one. I did not want to put it down and stayed up to finish. There was some of everything you want as a reader in a para-romance story and so much steaminess. These two were definitely not shy. Strong characters, strong story line, and a strong sense of connection with the entire crew makes this more like a new world being explored with so many different aspects and a coming war. I love the way this series is so outside the box and blends with the other focused on the kings without losing anything in the process. Great job!

This is book 4 in the Fire's Edge series and while it could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the previous books before this one as they all lead into each other in the bigger story ARC. In this one we get Lyndi and Levi's story. As a female dragon shifter Lyndi, she knows she can't truly mate. She knows her fate will be to one day be given as a prize for politics. Which is why she has stayed away from Levi, even though she is attracted to him. Instead she takes in orphaned dragons and gives them the home they are lacking. As Beta, Levi is fighter at his heart. His job is to protect his team and that includes the woman who insists on fighting at his side. He knew from the moment they met that they were destined to be mates, even if she won't accept it. But now the enemy is coming for Lyndi. And he will do what he must in order to not only protect her but to claim his mate.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Lyndi has always been someone that I wanted to know more about. And I loved her! She knows and accepts what fate seems to have in store for her even when she wants more. She has the largest heart and capacity for love that I think I have read in a very long time. The things she is willing to do for these young dragons that are orphaned or abandoned is beyond phenomenal! Levi is definitely the alpha, protective male. But sometimes I felt like he couldn't get past that. That was my only downside. Once he makes up his mind about something though, he will do what he must to ensure that it comes about. And he is more than willing to fight for the people he cares about. I love how this series and this author's other series are becoming more intertwined in regards to events that are happening. Especially since they are part of the same world. Just makes me want to read them even more!

Lyndi is a rarity, a female born dragon. She has a big heart and has basically adopted and brought up lots of orphan dragon shifters. Its all done from the heart, but it is also a good distraction from her attraction to Levi.

Levi is the Beta of his team of enforcers, and he is all about protecting others.

I loved these two together, their story is full of action, attraction, steamy and heart pulling moments.

This is a great addition to this series, and one to add to your tbr, if you love some dragon romance like me.

Love it! And being back in this series.

From the moment Levi Rowtag saw Lyndi Chandali he knew she was his mate. But her cold greeting had him backing-off. As a female-born dragon, she can never be a true mate so it makes pushing the sexy Beta away easier. And diving into protecting orphaned dragons keeps her busy.

They receive word that his King needs him, pushing him to pursue Lyndi before he leaves. An enemy is now coming for Lyndi and threatening her orphans. He'll have to defy his king, in order to help her protect the orphans and finally claim her as his.

And that epilogue! Loved it! Can't wait for Rune's book!

The Protector by Abigail Owen
Book 4 of the Fire’s Edge series. Can be read as a stand-alone but really better if familiar with either this series world building or the Inferno Rising series. Dragon shifters romance.

Lyndi and Levi have known each other for hundreds of years. Now he’s been called to serve the Gold King in the wars and the two finally verbalize their attraction. But neither wants to admit the depth of their longing. Beyond just these two principles, are dragon wars between colors and political groups and some gruesome fighting battles. Protect the family. Protect the colonies. Fight for the freedom against a political agenda.

Angst and denial. My angst because they just needed to talk to each other! 200+ of wasted years. But I guess there wouldn’t be a story otherwise. My denial that compelled me to keep reading a premise I can’t stand. The not talking and politics! Dragon politics though so nothing you’ll hear about beyond this world.
A little too much blood and gizzards in the fighting for me.
It is a romance so you know ...love and lots of lustiness.

Captivating and thrilling and a bit sentimental.

The epilogue makes is a cliffhanger so don’t read that if that’s an issue.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I can’t wait to continue to the next in the series.

Abigail Owen is a new author I've discovered this year and I've had so much fun reading her books. They are filled with so many paranormal/mythical creatures and the characters are fun. This story was no different.
Lyndi is a breath of fresh air. I liked reading about a character whose tough on the outside but a marshmallow on the inside; especially for a female character in a paranormal romance. She could kick butt but she also cared so much about helping dragon orphans. Levi was protective without being controlling (yes!). I love that Owen lets the male characters wait to get tagged in while their ladies take charge. Levi was also respectful and not an alphahole (another yes!). Perhaps I just love the Beta males, I don't know! Watching these two get past each others dragon scales was a treat. If you don't know by now I am a woman who loves angst and the tension Lyndi and Levi certainly delivers! My goodness talk about fanning the flames!
One of my favorite things in books is the found family aspect and it is done so well here. Owen certainly knows how to tug on my heartstrings.
My only qualm is that they took so long to get together? I mean they really suppressed their feelings for each other for hundreds of years? I find that hard to believe but perhaps I'm in the minority on that one.
I have not read the other books in this series but feel the author provided enough context for me to understand the world and the story lines.
Thank you to Abigail Owen and Entangled Publishing for gifting me an arc to review.

Lyndi and Levi have been denying their true feelings for over 200 years. When the fates of war threaten to pull them apart, they finally have to confront the desire they both feel for each other.

Every once in a while you manage to come across a very special series that fills you with excitement with the start of every prologue. After a thrilling journey full of delightful characters and gripping storyline you're almost sad to have the story end. But then each epilogue fills you again with that familiar excitement of anticipation as another sequel's groundwork is laid out before us. This fantastic addition to the Fire's Edge and companion Inferno Rising series proves once again that Abigail Owen has succeeded in brining us into this world that we never want to leave, or ever see the series end for that matter.

A truly thrilling aspect of this series is that we're constantly kept guessing as to what might happen next, or which preconceived assumptions will change with every turn of the page. While we've come to understand some of the basic components of this fantasy world of dragons, it's a world without a rule book, or at least, the rules are constantly evolving. The Huracan Enforcer team have come to realize how long they've been kept in the dark by their leaders when it comes to mates, mating, and what is or isn't possible in their magical landscape. The impossible is seemingly increasingly possible with each passing day. This lack of a rule book is what keeps each new addition to the series interesting and unique from that which came before. I definitely had a moment or two where I had an "oh snap" exclamation of surprise from a plot twist I didn't see coming.

Hands down, Lyndi was my favorite heroine of this series so far. She was a powerhouse of a woman who could hold her own with the boys, had a heart of gold to take in orphans who nobody else wanted, and a sprinkling of self-doubt when it comes to her worth in life as a sterile female dragon. Levi has loved her since first meeting, but her initial cold shoulder has kept him at a distance from admitting his true feelings for centuries. When Levi is called away by his king to fight in a war of kings, he realizes he has no more time to stay away from Lyndi. It's when they're at risk of losing each other that they can voice how important the other is to their very existence.

As if the prospect of Levi being called away wasn't hard enough of a trial for their burgeoning relationship, when a dragon from a rival enforcer team comes to claim Lyndi as his own mate, the challenges before them are thrown into overdrive. Levi and Lyndi's connection was palpable from the first page, and their combined strength in the face of adversity made them a standout couple of the entire series. Lyndi is convinced her infertility means Levi is deserving of more, but he's willing to do whatever is necessary to prove to her that he not only loves her, but that they're fated mates who deserve to be together. You root for him to succeed in convincing her to accept him fully into her heart, and you keep your fingers crossed that they'll both succeed in defeating a common enemy who wants Lyndi for himself.

Once started, it was near impossible to put this book down. I actually read the whole thing in about 3 sittings. Levi and Lyndi's story immediately pulls you in and won't let go. They have so many forces trying to pull them apart, that you can't help by stand by on the sidelines cheering on every success they achieve in the face of hardship. What seemed like years of animosity between them have shown how much they've watched and learned about each other in all that time. Lyndi and Levi are the ones to draw you in, the rest of the team will pull you in even closer with their familial support, and their battles against injustice will leave you on the edge of your seat.
