Fantastically fresh take on vampires and zombies as a coven of vampires attempts to survive a zombie plague that has turned humans into mindless brutes roaming the countryside in devastating hordes capable of mowing down anything in their path. If that weren't enough trouble, the vampires also have to worry about a mysterious group of vampire hunters known as the Warwolves who seek to destroy them.

I really enjoyed this interesting perspective on the "surviving an apocalypse" theme and found the book unique in many ways. For one, the characters we follow are a conflicted, complex lot. They behave in sometimes contradictory or confounding ways but this didn't feel contrived to me. Rather it seemed very realistic to how most of us live our lives as a confused mess of emotions and motivations, but readers expecting very clear-cut, consistent, and even moral behavior from their protagonists may find this off-putting.

This is a totally different genera take for me. Vampires and zombies. I guess there are come like this out there, but I will be honest, I am hesitant to read a zombie/vampire collaboration. Well I was until this one. this book focuses mostly on the vampires, with a side of zombie. They are more of setting as in the vampires are already pretty much nonexistent and trying to keep their spices alive means they need to drink human blood and that blood needs to come from living humans.. Hence why the zombies are a problem for their species. Rise and his fellow vampires do not need to kill the humans but the humans need to be willing to be their food. Live and be vampire food for the rest of your life or be eaten and die by a zombie? Hmm, decisions decisions?! I am glad this is the first in a series and I am looking forward to learned more about this vampire clan and am hoping for more zombie action. Opps, I almost forgot to mention the Warwolves. . No not werewolves, warwolves. Humans (alive humans) who are out to kill the vampires.. In this story the humans fear zombies and vampires., the Vampires fear zombies and warwolves, the warwolves fear zombies, and the zombies, well they are too zombified to fear anyone. Looking forward to book two and hopefully more. Thanks you to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for an advance review copy of this book,. ,
