I LOVED the artwork in this book. The sweeping shadows, the angled figures, the black/white/gray of the images pulled you into the darkness. This is a perfect book to read by a fire on a dark and stormy night. Telling the tales of her grandmother Suarez pulls you into what life was life in Spain in the "olden times". My only disappointment is that this is published by Europe Comics, so I can't purchase it for our library, as I would have many patrons that would enjoy this. I don't know if there will ever be a published US version, but I loved the dark chill provided by this book. The art... I just, I can't describe how much this artwork suits this book so well. Very well done!

I really enjoyed this short graphic novel full of creepy stories. It reminded me of stories by Emily Carroll which I love very much. It definitely has these - Through the Woods - vibes. It has an eerie, dark, gothic atmosphere.

I appreciate that there were short explanations of the stories in between, as I like to learn about different folklore and mythologies. I haven't known anything about Galicia and its culture so it was pretty informative and also helpful.

The art is amazing. I love the grey and black color palette. It really brings out the gloomy and horror atmosphere of the stories. It is overall stunning.

It´s a perfect read for long winter nights.

Thank you to Europe Comics and NetGalley for providing me an electronic copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

This graphic novel was a creepy, gorgeous look at Spanish folklore; I'd never heard of any of these tales, but I love learning about local legends. Suárez's illustrations are a perfect, moody match for the chilling stories in the graphic novel. I liked that each story had a brief introduction; these intros served as a good way to break up the overall narrative, while giving each story the feel of an "around-the-campfire" retelling. After all, every great horror story happened to the friend of a friend, which makes them just believable enough to be terrifying. Given that I was coming into the stories without any real knowledge of the culture or society of early 1900s Spain, I needed these references to guide me into each story. I'd have liked even more background on the stories since I like diving into the who, why, when, and where of legends and myths as additional information might have allowed readers to make deeper ties between the stories. Overall, it was a beautifully illustrated and captivating graphic novel, and I enjoyed every page.

So much to enjoy here! It gave me Emily Carroll's Through the Woods vibes, but it's certainly unique. I loved the art style, and towards the end of the book the stories got very creepy. I don't know if the fact I wasn't familiar with the stories beforehand affected my enjoyment (I did enjoy the short explanations after each story), as they seemed to me to end very abruptly without really going anywhere. Still, I really enjoyed this.

A cool & creepy collection of stories. Some of the stories were better than others. The illustrations were dark and spooky and added to the creepiness factor.

I would recommend it for people who like horror & scary stories.

I really enjoyed this one! Unique art style and perfect blend of creepy and horror elements!

I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.

I really like the illustrations of this graphic novel. They were dark and had a spooky atmosphere. Unfortunately, the story did not hold up to the spooky atmosphere that the illustrations had created. The stories all seemed very short and none of them really creeped me out. We didn't get a good enough feel for the characters before the story ended so I didn't feel invested in any of them.

Such a great story and great artwork. The book was so immersive, I got chills while reading it. Would definitely buy it if it's available in my country.

Thank you Europe Comics and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this wonderful comic book to read and review!
I'm a relative newbie to horror and comic books, but the content in this book is inspired from various legends and tales set in the Galician landscape and the panels are beautiful and mysterious. I loved the bit at the end of each folktale where the legend or folk tale was described. If there's one particular thing about the artwork that struck me was the intricacy of the details in the baskets drawn in the panels. Did anyone else notice that too?

i started this at night which wasn't a really good idea as it creeped the shit outta me lmao, this book has to be read with the daylight 😂

although it was PRETTY dark and creepy (the conversations, the old fashioned looking illustrations) i didn't really connect with the story at all. i think it was too short of a book to actually get engaged to it, i just flew through the pages and next thing i knew, i was done with it. it's a quick read but also forgettable.

i'd recommend reading this to those who want a creepy but quick read, something dark and possessive, but not too engaging.

I loved this graphic novel, the story of a paranormal activity happening in a small Spanish village. The art style is beautiful and very atmospheric. Impossible to not fall in love with this folklore style. Very unique.

"Tales of the Mist" is a collection of chilling stories that remind me of classic fairytales with a pinch of terrifying details -- think "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman. I truly loved that these stories were inspired by Spanish folklore, and I am now curious to dive deeper into these myths.

Though I loved the concept behind this graphic novel, I feel like I didn't fully enjoy reading it because some of the stories were simply too short. Had they been more fleshed out, I probably would have rated this collection 3 or 4 stars. I still think that everyone who enjoys myths and folklore should pick up this collection -- you won't regret it.

A beautifully illustrated collection of chilling short stories! It was so interesting to explore traditional Spanish Catholic folktales and legends, especially when related to the author's own family history. The addition of photographs at the end, and incorporated into the stories, was a lovely touch. I wish the stories had been longer to allow me to get fully immersed, as I struggled to follow characters who had so little development. The stories are a little disjointed - I would have prefered having the paragraphs of exposition at the end of each story woven into the story itself. The real star of this graphic novel, however, is the artwork - atmospheric, with beautiful textures, detailed settings and appealing character design. I would love a print edition if one becomes available! I'll look out for more of Laura Suárez's work.

Tales of the Mist
Author & Illustrator: Laura Suárez
Genre: Horror, Graphic Novel
Pages: 126

This graphic novel is set in Galicia, Spain in the 1930’s. It is a collection of five short stories that capture folklore/oral traditions from this small town.

What I liked about this graphic novel:
*The artwork is stunning. I am not sure what art style these beautiful grayscale illustration are but I loved them. They were a beautiful mix of line and watercolor/gouche backgrounds.
*The artwork and the narrative are synergistic. The scene that the story sets is amplified by the illustrations and vice versa.
*I loved the paranormal, creepy vibes of these short stories – they gave me the chills. There is a great cosmic horror/Lovecraftian vibe to this graphic novel.
*I really appreciated the “interruptions” between the stories that helped explain the background of these stories.
*I liked that the author used a variety of splashes, half splashes and panels to convey the elements of the story.
*The folklore that this book described was new to me and I am so appreciative to learn about these tales.

What I did not like about this graphic novel:
*The stories were not well-developed and would be better described as vignettes. As a result, I did not feel like I could connect with the characters in the story. I had to read this book twice to really understand what was happening. (I did not realize that the stories are only connected by being in the same town.) I wanted more depth and development of these folklore tales.

I would recommend this beautiful graphic novel for the illustration, the creepy spooky vibe it sets and how it captures these folklore oral traditions.

I love how ominous and dark the stories are. It was a thrill reading them! I also liked learning about Galician culture from a comic book. It surely is an interesting experience. I'd love to read more from Laura Suârez.

I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC to review.

This book remind me of Through The Woods by Emily Carroll. So, if you're a fan of her work, you'll certainly like this book.

Gothic, eerie and athmosferic, I found it more frightning than Through The Woods. It's dark colored illustrastions certainly help this feeling.

This is a collection of short stories and I really enjoyed the first and the last ones, the ones in the middle I found less complex and attention gripping. I love the fact that the author provides further information on the lore behind the stories to help you understand the context of the hispanic reality, traditions and supersticions by the time the story takes place.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I'm curious to learn more on Laura's work. I ended up giving this book 3.25 stars.

I like graphic novels and I like tales of the weird. So “Tales of the Mist” by Laura Suárez seems an obvious choice. And it is indeed a collection of haunting stories, of ghosts and superstition from the culture of Spain.

The eerie atmosphere is invoked not only by the stories themselves, but by the black and white illustrations. The short stories follow several protagonists of a Spanish village in the 1930s who are seemingly attacked by supernatural forces. It is easy to imagine what life might have been like back then. All these people are devout Catholics. Their belief in demons and the devils run deep and thus for them it all is very real.

The switching of perspectives from one protagonist to another is interspersed with explanations by the author herself - about how her grandmother told her of these stories when she was a child. This makes the stories more accessible and easier to understand. I just wish there would have been more of a connection storyline keeping it all together.

Nevertheless I had a good reading experience and already recommended the book to a friend with similar tastes. I thank the publisher and netgalley for letting me read “Tales of the Mist”.

"Timeless legends in which pre-war realism and the paranormal would come face-to-face."
It´s entertaining, creepy, atmospheric, and incredibly haunting. I read this when the sun had fallen to create a little more of suspense in my head and it worked.
The illustrations are precise and on point. While I do feel that it could have been a little darker the stories where full of suspense.

I don't read a lot of graphic novels, but "Tales of The Mist" promised stories about ghosts and other paranormal activity, so I simply couldn't resist!
I enjoyed eerie illustrations and spooky tales, but the stories were so short that I didn't have a chance to establish connection with any of the characters and was left with a lot of unanswered questions. I wish there would be more information about spirits mentioned in the stories.

i don't usually read graphic novels but i loved this so much. very atmospheric, a perfect quick winter read methinks. i honestly didn't expect to feel so immersed in these stories since it's not my usual type but i was pleasantly surprised. it's amazing how you can tell stories with so few words, such a great talent. the art was so simple and haunting and just perfect.
