I loved this book! Rachel Frank is a harried mom of twin eight year old boys. Her ex Gavin is busy with his job and new fiancé and expects perfectionist Rachel to pick up the slack. When her ex Gavin cannot make the Frank family summer vacation, Rachel is convinced by Gavin’s brother, Travis, to come with her sons. Of course, Rachel and Travis and attracted to each other, but as her ex brother-in-law, they can’t act on their attraction. Loved the main characters and all of the side characters (who I hope will be in future books). If you want an enjoyable RomCom, this book fits the bill. I received an ARC of this book from the author and publisher for my honest opinion.

This book is a fabulous romantic comedy. The heroine, Rachel, is a realistic representation of a current mom. Her thoughts and actions are spot on, not only with the sweet parts, but with the gritty parts of motherhood as well. Her relationship with Travis is well developed within the storyline. The banter amongst the main characters will crack you up. Rachel and Travis' chemistry is hot in a natural way, and not at all contrived.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"The thing about perfection, she realized . . . was that it didn't really exist. It's a phantom that drove her to try to do better when she was doing her very best to begin with. Turned out, sometimes making a mess of things actually made her happier."

I adore Christina Hovland's Mile High Matched series, so I was eager to try her new contemporary romance Rachel, Out of Office. Filled with fun mom-wisdom quotes at the beginning of each chapter, Rachel's story is a blend of light-hearted humor, sweet-heat, and embracing happiness instead of to-do lists. Mother or not, we can related to endless list, perfectionism, and struggling to say no. Like Rachel we try to be super human, but just end up super tired. Different from her face-paced and steamy rom-coms, this slower-tempo ─ little bit angsty ─ read has great family/friend dynamics and laugh-out-loud shenanigans that make for an enjoyable read.

I feel like if I was older, or a mom, I'd like this better. That's not to say it wasn't good, though. It was really cute, sweet and a very good example of communication between two people in a relationship. I liked the characters, especially Travis, and Rachel's perfectionism hit way too close to home.

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

I really enjoyed this book and having twins myself i know what little tornados they can be and how they can be best friends and the worst of enemies.

The book is told from dual point of view, Rachel and Travis and we see as they navigate their feelings towards each other along with the fact that her ex husband is also Travis's brother. The boys mother has also forbid Rachel and Travis having anything to do with each other as she believes that Rachel and her ex husband Colin will get back together (no happening).

Both navigate everything with composure and as adults and when things blow up all at the same time, Rachel shows her strength and Travis his support and love. When it really matters they stand up for each other and the love that is blooming between them.

I am really hoping that Colin will get a book and some of Rachels friends, especially Molly.

Sweet story, crazy life, great ending.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The author manages to capture a single mom’s drama and her over compulsion to be the perfect mother and perfect business owner. While trying to manage at all, saying no obviously is not in her vocabulary.
There were a few situations that made me just say who in the hell would run their business this way. But the overall feel of the book with the fun humorous situations and her heart-melting brothers-in-law made this book an exciting read.
The author managed to capture the sexual tension perfectly in the story. Rachel always thought she didn’t care for her ex brother-in-law but in reality, he was freaking hot, and once again she couldn’t say no.
Fire up that passion and the sexy situations and you’ve got a story that is tough to put down. In fact, I read it all in one sitting!
The author grabs us with her mom moments perfectly scattered throughout. With family relationships such as they are, and the delicate balancing act of trying to manage a romance with two 8-year-olds, it’s a story you can completely understand and you will find yourself cheering them on.
A sweet, sexy, and steamy story with a crazy lifestyle and a wonderful ending!
This was a really enternaining reading, in which Rachel, single mum of 8 year old twins, has to accept that she is not perfect and learn to let others help her. I loved the relationship with her in-laws. And the quotes in the beginning of each chapter are truly hilarious!!
Perfection doesn't exist - stop forcing it to happen.
On the outside, Rachel looks the part of a Pinterest single mom to busy 8-year-old twin boys - and two puppies. She has her own online business, volunteers to help with all her sons' activities, and never asks for help. She's got it all together, right? In actuality, her candle is burning at every end possible, she wants to be every thing to everybody and feels like she's losing it yet won't give up the reigns. Why? Because she's a perfectionist control freak that thinks that the only way it will be done right is if she does it herself. She has to plan and control every single thing or she feels it will be a disaster. I had a hard time warming up to Rachel but only because it irritated me that I could see a lot of my own self in her. I guess you might say it was a bit of an eye opener for me.
It was only when literally everything in her life fell apart (culminating with a Frank Family puke-fest) for her to realize what she was trying to attain - perfection - was impossible and trying to do it was making her miserable. She finally learned to let some things go - with some help from her hunky ex-brother-in-law. She had to accept that some things will work themselves out without her micromanaging. And while she's selflessly taking care of everyone else she realizes that she needs to let someone to take care of her once in awhile too.
Overall, I liked this story because it was somewhat of a journey for Rachel. Learning herself, her boundaries, her life outside of being a mom and the ever painful let-it-go mindset that can truly lead to her happiness.
In the end, I was cheering for Rachel because she had come so far and has a bright new path in front of her!
I absolutely adored this novel. since the beginning, I already knew I was going to love it; the mc is incredible and interesting to read and how the family and friends are portrayed kept me curious for more. However, I have to take one star out of the review because the chemistry between the main relationship diminished a little bit at the end of the book.
overall, I really liked and it was a fun, cute read.
I did like this book. This book is a fun read. I didn't think it was as funny as her other series, could be because I'm not a mom and some of the things I just couldn't relate to. I did enjoy reading it, I still laughed, cried and got all hot and bothered. I did like that we saw Sadie who is in the Mile High Matched series. Which by the way highly recommend everyone read that series. This book I think show how resilient a mom has to be especially with twins. I saw more power to any women who has children. I could never do it. I do think that Rachel takes on too much with everything but that is all moms out there. This book is very relatable to the real world. I also think that Trav is perfect for her and of course I am happy she finally sees that. It will be fun to follow along with Rachel and her friends when they start to find someone and also see what happens with Trav's brothers.
Rachel is a perfectionist.
Usually, she can easily manage all aspects of her life.
But all of a sudden, she has to deal with her 8 year old twin boys, 2 puppies, her business and demanding clients, her not very reliable ex-husband, his controlling fiancee, her meddling mother-in-law and one brother-in-law getting sexier by. the minute.
Furthermore, ex-husband is bailing out on yearly family summer retreat at the lake. How will she cope?
This was a very believable contemporary romance with great cast of characters. I felt right there with them.
An easy rom/com we can all relate to!
Let’s bring out the margaritas and keep looking for toothbrushes...
*I received an arc from Netgalley, publisher & author for an honest review*. I have loved this author’s books & this one was no exception!! It was honest, so funny with laugh out loud moments, entertaining, emotional & deals with real life, everyday struggles. Rachel is a single divorced working mother of 8 year old twin boys whose ex-husband Gavin is no help. She has the support of his brother’s Dave & Travis, who try to fill in for Gavin & an ex-mother in law that wants her and Gavin to reconcile. We can’t forget the two puppies Gavin gives the boys for their birthday with hilarious results. Travis & Rachel make a great couple that you’ll be routing for to get their HEA. The supporting characters are wonderful as well. I’m looking forward to the next books, maybe Gavin & her friend Molly?? Christina Hovland is such an amazing, funny author, you will love this book & all of her other books!!
A great read.
Rachel has twin boys and a useless ex. His family are constantly picking up the slack for him, and this summer is no different when he pulls out of the holiday he was supposed to take the children. Strugglng to run her business and look after everything else, she starts relying mroe on her ex brother in law Travis. Will they become more than friends and what does that mean for the rest of the family?
A raunchy Lovestory that took me a while to warm up to.
Romance novels are pretty predictable in who will end up happily with whom, so it's the writing that makes the difference between a book worth your while and a waste of reading time.
It took me about 25% into the book to warm up to the incoherent inner thoughts if the protagonists and the switches in perspective that fail to give deeper insights into a heater and are all written in the same omnipotent third person voice made it hard to get lost in the story.
I appreciate the underlying current of overcoming perfectionism, especially from a single mom perspective, and hope this book will bring value to readers that can identify with its heroine.
This was super entertaining and I loved Rachel! It was a light hearted read and it really just had that feel good romance
This was a book of firsts for me: my first by this author and my first romantic momedy - and I am absolutely hooked on both!
As a mom (albeit not a single one) of an 8 year old boy (thankfully just the one), this book resonated with me on so many levels. The pressure and the panic and the constantly trying to make things work. I felt Rachel in a way that immediately made her relatable, sympathetic, and downright likable to me. I will forever be a sucker for a strong heroine.
So that made it easier to fall head over heels for her unconventional romance. Can I just tell you how much I adored that there was so little angst in the romance? Because Rachel was dealing with enough already and the fact that Travis was an unexpected source of balance and peace for her is what made the romance so dreamy for me. Add in some seriously steamy chemistry, and an adorable connection that was just the right amount of banter and heat and -- man, I just really really loved them.
I also loved how the greater family dynamic was written. The formidable mama-bear who met her match with Rachel (no slouch in the mama-bear department herself). I loved how Rachel worked things out with her ex, and how honestly that relationship was written. All the relationships, really. This story had an authenticity to it that made it utterly unputdownable to me. It tugged at my heartstrings, coaxed out countless smiles, and I loved - literally - every minute spent with these flawed, but wonderful characters.
If you're looking for something sweet, sexy, and satisfying in a way that feels both relatable and fairytale-ish all at the same time, definitely give Rachel, Out of Office a try.
3.25 stars.
This started off so promising! I was all geared up for Rachel to be the strong and smart single mom with an attraction to her ex husband’s brother. I even totally dig the meddling mother in law. But then the connection Rachel shared with Travis seemed weird to me. It was so full of angst at first and then was just immediately all in. There was not even a hint of slow burn. It was 0-60 in no time.
I wanted more family dynamic. I wanted more Frank family shenanigans. Instead I got a whole lot of just Rachel and Travis.
Don’t get me wrong, they were sweet! I didn’t dislike the book. I enjoyed my reading experience. I just wanted more.
Rachel, Out of Office by Christina Hovland was the perfect balance of steamy, sweet, and satisfying. The heroine, Rachel, is trying to do everything, and she is for the most part a true single supermom to her twin boys while managing a demanding entrepreneur career. Her perfectionist tendencies were a little hard to read, as I find also myself pushing others away because I do not trust them to do things as well as I would do on my own. But, I have hope as Rachel did find a way to balance everything in the end.
This book is told from two perspectives, Rachel and Travis. Travis is her ex-brother-in-law, and his perspective is refreshing and provides great insights. Rachel and Travis have significant obstacles in place to finding their own happily ever after which makes this book highly entertaining. The book has an enjoyable cast of characters who add to the family dynamics in an amusing way,
I did mention above that the book was steamy, so you have been warned. My husband benefited from some of the more descriptive passages!
The chapter headings were a fun touch, different quotes were shared that were hilarious. A particular favorite was “Motherhood should come with a warning that you’ll be forced to take a crash course in Bodily Fluids 101 from the School of Life.”
This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, steamy, hilarious, contemporary romantic comedy. It has likable, engaging characters, puppies, family drama, a heart-warming romance, many laugh out loud moments, and a happily ever after ending. The mom quotes at the beginning of each chapter are a great touch. I am looking forward to reading Ms. Hovland's next entry in this series with great anticipation.
I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
I really loved this fun look at a mother trying to make the best life for her kids and herself. Rachel is so relatable, largely because of her perfectionism. She just knows that everything will work out if she works a little harder and gives a little more. I have been there, done that, got the gray hair to prove it. But this is the fun version of perfectionism, so her life goes down in flames in funny ways. It wasn't too angsty to enjoy reading the chaos.
I was also glad that this was dual POV because we really need to read Travis's thoughts. He is very funny, and he has a very different view of Rachel than she has of herself. I like how gentle he was with Rachel, even when he needed to tell her something she didn't want to hear. He is very romantic and a terrific match for Rachel and her boys.
The secondary characters add a lot of fun, too. I liked Brady and Kellan, Rachel's sons. I can't stand bratty kids in books, but these guys were normal -- good kids who sometimes do things they shouldn't. The Frank family was a hoot. What was up with Evelyn's cat? That was hilarious. Gavin Frank, Rachel's ex-husband, is a sympathetic character with a good heart. He needs an HEA, and I have the feeling a few hints were dropped in that direction. Molly is an excellent best friend, and I hope she is getting a book soon. She has a crazy outlook on life and dating. And Sadie from Do Me a Favor makes some appearances and adds some of her special brand of humor.
I meant to take a few days with this book and enjoy it slowly. I ended up reading right through it pretty quickly because Rachel and Travis kept me laughing. I guess that means I will have to go back and read it again!
