Jane in St. Pete by Cynthia Harrison

A recently widowed lecturer who moves to Florida from Detroit. Shortly after she moves in there is a murder.

A reasonably well written book humour a fun mix of characters all you would expect in a murder suspense.

Quick read if a but slow going at times which meant I did skip a few pages along the way nice setting though.

Jane in St. Pete is about a recently widowed woman who leaves Detroit for a new start in Florida. I loved the different characters that lived in the condo where Jane lives. This is the first book in a series so I'm looking forward to hearing more about them!

I really wanted to like this book as the description of the location, characters and mystery had me very interested. However, I found that the book started slow and never really kept my interest.

The characters seemed a bit shallow and the writing didn't seem very focused.

I thought this story sounded interesting and looked forward to reading it. It was okay, but not quite what I expected. After the death of her husband, Jane Chasen sold her home in Detroit and moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. When her neighbor, George, finds a bloody shirt in his car, he goes to her home to find out what to do. When the police get involved, they find the owner of the shirt dead in his studio. Not knowing if this murder involves art work, Jane a former art lecturer, offers her help. When she is threatened, it seems that she is getting too close to someone. Who could it be? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Jane’s husband, Stan, died about 6 months ago. It was not a marriage filled with love and he had become a workaholic, never seeming to want to be with her and their children. Jane, an art lecturer, moves to St. Pete’s and begins a new life. While admiring the yard art work of Wayne, A Seminole Indian, she begins to draw followers into his unique kind of art. Her best friend, Kim, develops a relationship with him and shortly he is found dead. Jane works with Jesse, a detective, to explain some of the art Wayne created and to help find his murderer. While hunting the killer, someone seems intent on harming Jane as well. I really enjoyed the setting and characters in this book and the story displayed honest emotions. Jane needs to work through her attachment to Jesse, who seems to be a workaholic as well. Marisol, her daughter, wants to know if Jane loved her father and presents a difficult relationship. The neighbors in her complex and the friends she makes while working on two cases make the story heartwarming.

I read this book as an ARC in exchange for a review. I have not read this author before and was drawn to the book’s location of St Pete, as it is a beautiful area. I thought the story drug on and found myself skipping ahead just to see how it all ended. I was glad to see the ending g and know that Jane and her daughter enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving visit. Other than that, I didn’t find much else Interesting about the book and I doubt I will look for any more in this series or by this author. Thank you for the chance to read the book.

Jane is a recent widow, who decides to leave Detroit and head to Florida to be near her parents. When a murder happens near her condo complex, she gets involved with offering her artistic support (the victim was an artist). Meeting Jesse, the hunky detective helps, although the sparks are soft. A good start to a series, and I liked the grouping of friends and family she has. Would recommend, and look forward to more books of Jane and Jesse.

Jane I like and she has so much potential as an interesting character for a new series, but the whole storyline just faltered. This whole book had such potential but it is almost as if the author got caught up in her head about whatever point she was trying to make and just missed the mark badly.
There is entirely too much random stuff happening and yet nothing at all makes sense, I do not think I will read this author again.
I do not recommend at all.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley.she

I was excited to read this as I live near St. Pete. However, knowing the area made the story more difficult to believe. I understand that authors take artistic license, but some of it wasn't necessary. For example, there was a mention of a Piggly Wiggly supermarket. Knowing there hasn't been a Piggly Wiggly in this area for probably 30 years took me out of the story. For someone who doesn't live in the area, it wouldn't be a big deal, but it was for me.

Overall,, the story was hard to follow with too many characters. Many of the supporting characters were completely unnecessary. I also wasn't fond of some of the negative stereotypes of Floridians. I did like that the main character was 55 and restarting her life after a loveless marriage. it's nice to see books with characters who are over 25.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read a digital advance copy in return for an honest review.

Recently, I was able to download a copy of Jane in St. Pete by Cynthia Harrison to read and review. The main character of the book, Jane, is a recently widowed fifty-five-year-old who has left Detriot and moved to a gated condo community in St. Pete, Florida. The book opens with Jane attending a coffee hour at her community center. We get a real sense of Jane right off the bat, based on her internal monologue and we get introduced to people around her via the coffee hour small talk. I thought this was a clever way to start off the book and give us a sense of who's who. Like me, Jane has given up dying her hair, a detail I really liked! Unlike me, she is quickly involved in a murder investigation.

I thought it was very clever of Cynthia Harrison to use Jane's background as an art history teacher as a reason for her to assist in the investigation. In addition to the murder, there may also be mobsters looking for someone in the community! Plus Jane has unresolved issues with the sudden death of her husband, issues with her adult daughter, and then there is the handsome detective. All of these situations are navigated and come to a very satisfying conclusion.

When the book was nearly half over, the narration moves from Jane to another character, I will say that threw me off as I was reading. The second point of view is used off and on for a few chapters and then we finish the book in Jane's head.

This is the sort of book that is a nice beach read, or to have on hand if you are a train commuter for work, or if you like to have a book to read during a lunch break or medical appointment. The book has a fairly small cast of characters to keep track of and most of the action occurs in just a few places, so it is easy to pick back up if you are reading it here and there.
