I received a sample of the first 10 chapters of this book, and I have to say, I am hooked! It is great to see Meyer doing more fairytale retelling. At first I felt a bit annoyed at the main character--protagonists who stupidly cause their own problems tend to bother me. BUT I also like that unlike in the fairytale, it isn't her father stupidly bragging and getting her in trouble. It doesn't seem to be a straight retelling of Rumplestiltskin, but definitely borrows the overarching story and themes. I like the historical, realistic setting paired with the magic of the forest and the creatures within it.

For the sample I read, I give it 5 stars. I will have to finish it once it comes out before I can make that official.

I loved this so much I bought the hardcover the minute it came out. Marissa Meyer is one the very best at fairytale retellings. She knows how to change things just enough to make them new and interesting but maintains the feel and tone of the original. She is also very creative with her plot twists. Her writing is atmospheric but clean so you can relate to the characters easily and the story flows quickly and easily. I'm a fan.

I have been a huge fan of Marissa Meyer for years since Cinder first came out. I was very excited to read her newest novel! Even though this was just a sample of the book I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be adding a physical copy to my home library soon!

This was only a short intro to the book but so far I am loving it. I can't wait to get my copy and continue reading. I am a big fan of the Cinder series and am looking forward to this new retelling.

Serilda is 18 years old. She has been cursed by the god of lies. Serilda has become quite the storyteller. When she hears he’llhounds chasing two maidens, she can’t help giving them assistance to save themselves from the Erlking and his group of the undead. She is confronted by the Erlking but doesn’t admit to helping the maids, yet tells him she is busy turning straw into gold. The Erlking come back to Serilda at the next full moon and locks her into a room filled with straw. If she doesn’t turn the straw into gold, she will die. In her distress, she manages to call a teen who suddenly appears and tells her that he can do it for a price. What is the price?

There is much more to the story but I don’t want to tell the whole tale! There are unexpected twists and turns in this novel. Serilda will discover secrets and a curse while in her room filled with straw. I admired the world that the author has written for this story. The characters appear so real as if I was there listening to their conversations. It’s a great unusual rendition of the fairytale of “Rumpelstiltskin.” I enjoyed it immensely.

Would've love to read the whole book, thank you for the sample. I really love the world-building and the characters. I think the author way to describe everything makes the reader get into the story within a few pages.

Absolutely loved the beginning 10 chapters of this book! Immediately went and purchased a finished copy so I could continue reading ASAP.

Marissa Meyer easily weaves a very old-world, eerie type fairytale setting, where the "fair folk" and magical creatures in the woods are to be feared instead of lusted after or adored. Serilda was an enchanting character from the start, and I adored her relationship with both the school children and her father. There was never a point within the first 10 chapters that felt slow or too bogged down by plot/world-building details. Every piece was enchanting and felt important to the story as a whole. By the end of chapter 10 we had already had our "villain", our turning point problem, and a bridge into what we could expect from "Act II" and the rest of the book. Can't wait to keep reading!

What a sampler! I never wanted it to end. Marissa is back at it again in spectacular fashion with another breath-taking fairytale retelling. I loved the Lunar Chronicles but there was some real joy in seeing Meyer tackle straight fantasy as an even more experienced writer. You can really tell she’s gotten better at her craft in this one. This sampler sets the mood perfectly and has me making grabby hands for the full ebook. Gilded is atmospheric and layered in such a way that this world she’s crafted feels lived in full of magic and danger and more importantly stories. I adored Serilda as a protagonist with a gift I’m sure we’ve only scratched the surface off. SO much groundwork has been laid in this sampler that can and likely will lead off in fascinating ways in the rest of the novel and I can’t wait. The Erlking is both menacing and captivating and such a fascinating antagonist, so well rendered s you can feel his threat emanate off the page. if this sampler is any indication I'm sure gilded will be yet another magnificent feather in Marissa Meyer's cap and I can't wait to see the rest of the novel goes from here. I am on the edge of my seat!

I got a preview sample from NetGalley, knowing I was probably going to like it.
Let’s just say I can’t wait for our library’s copy to come in so I can finish the story

A retelling of Rumpelstiltskin in which the maiden, and not the father, is a chronic liar who tells stories only children listen to and who's not trusted by anyone even when she's telling the truth? Now, this is one premise I've not seen before for this fairy tale. What an original idea!

The ten chapters of the extended sampler I got whet my appetite so much there's no way I'm going to skip the full novel! I'm used to Marissa Meyer writing steampunk-style Sci-Fi retellings, and was pretty much expecting "Gilded" to be in the same world. But I love this different setting and genre as much as the space opera she created for her other retellings. I like Serilda's unique voice, sardonic and self-deprecating yet honest, her humorous dissing of the schoolteacher behind her back, the spooky and sometimes silly stories she tells, the dark fairytale atmosphere... All of it, and especially, I find the Erlking intriguing, what little is shown of his interactions with Serilda are promising, as the chemistry is too evident to ignore even with only a couple of exchanges in the sampler. This story is not one to miss, both for its plotline that's shaping up to be twisty and engrossing and the potential romance there might be.

Thankful NetGalley for this sampler! Yay am a huge fan of Marissa Meyer and the magical worlds she create and this book is so good. Going into reading this book I knew it was a rumplestilskin retelling. And she just takes the story so much more beyond the original. It’s so deliciously haunting and I can’t wait till I can finish it with my finished copy. So looking forward to finishing this new release.

“He had made his own prison, and he had done it for her.” Omg, my heart! Meyer retells the classic Rumplestiltskin with some intriguing and magical twists that pulled me in and had me until the end. Although admittedly a slow start, once the story got moving, I was hooked trying to figure out the details and waiting for the story to unfold. The unique strands Meyer wove through the classic tale are captivating, and although I’m completely yelling “UGH!!!” that the story has to have a continuation, I will definitely be scooping it up as soon as Meyer puts out the next book. This is an adult centered fairy tale you won’t find in Disney!

Gilded is a dark amalgamation of the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale with mythology. As enticing as the summary sounded, the actual execution of the book left something to be desired. As with Meyer’s other books, this one weighs in at about 500 pages. Staying motivated to continue to read was challenging, due to the slow moving plot. The characters felt flat, which also created a sense of the book dragging. The feel of this one is a little similar to Heartless, in that it’s darker than the Lunar Chronicles, and seems written for an audience that is older than the intended audience of the Lunar Chronicles. Readers should also go into the book knowing that it is not a standalone, so there will not be complete resolution at the end.

In terms of the audiobook quality, I think Rebecca Soler was a great choice as narrator, since she has narrated other Marissa Meyer books in the past. She does a fabulous job of using different intonations for each character, making the book seem as if there is a multi-person cast.

Thanks go to NetGalley and MacMillan Children’s and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to read and listen to an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Marissa Meyer has done it again, taking yet another fairytale and spinning it into an enrapturing tale like no other. I can't wait to read the rest of this book when it comes out.

I have been counting down the days until I can get this book in my hands and this chapter sampler has made me even more excited. Can't wait to read the full story!

I can’t wait for this book to be published so I can finish the rest of the story. Meyer again takes a familiar story (this time Rumplestilksken) and adapts it to a compelling story. This sample was a great taste of what’s to come next and I have my suspicions, but I’ll have to get the full story to see if mine are correct.

All in all; a definitely fun read and one I recommend friends of fairy tale

I want to thank Net Galley for giving me a sample of this book as an ARC. I was given the first 10 chapters. That sounds like a lot, but it only beginning to touch the story. It is deeply plotted with dense rich characters. It is a re imagining of the fairy tale- Rumplestiltskin. It is captivating and intriguing. I look forward to reading the whole book.

Gilded is Marissa Meyer's re-imagining of Rumpelstiltskin. This was a chapter sampler of the first ten chapters.

"Serilda spins a tale to protect some forest folk from the Erlking. And now he holds her until she can prove her power."

The first few chapters are full of Meyer's imagination and great writing. She pulls you into the story right away. Fans of the Lunar Chronicles should enjoy this also.
