This cookbook has some great basics and how-to's for people who are new to a plant-based diet. It explains the benefits and method for getting started on a hig-protein plant-based meal plan. The recipes are simple, have wholesome ingredients and sound delicious. I would highly recommend this for meal ideas at the very least even if not sticking to the whole diet plan.

This book is a great tool for beginners who need some guidance on going plant-based with high protein. I love the organization. It gives you a 4 week plan, a shopping list, prepping for each week, and information about each recipe. It's easy, informative, and even fun. It didn't have photos for each recipe, but it was organized very well and the lack of photos didn't take away from a great book. I highly recommend.

I’m vegetarian and am trying to move towards vegan so I was very interested in this book, especially the meal plans. Unfortunately this book was not for me. The recipes seemed too hippy dippy for me and the layout of the book didn’t help keep my interest.

Thanks for the chance to check out this cookbook.

My family has been eating plant based for quite a few years. The one thing I really liked about this cookbook is that it was a whole food plant based cookbook. That means there were no fake processed meats. I was really glad for that as these are not a part of our family diet and I often find them in vegan cookbooks.

I liked the variety of recipes in this one too.

I wish I had gotten a physical copy of this book. Unfortunately the ebook just wasn’t easy to use and I love full colour photos of the recipes, which I couldn’t get on a kindle.

Overall, I think this is a great cookbook and would recommend it to someone looking for a plant based cookbook.

Thanks to Netgalley for a chance to review this cookbook.

I think this cookbook can be a great resource for those just starting off with plant based eating. However, I've primarily kept a mostly plant based diet for years now and suffer from falling into cooking ruts. I like to pick new vegetarian or vegan or plant base diet cook books for inspiration. I think this book offers a decent variety of recipes. There a few staples recipes from the book that I am excited to incorporate in my cooking. I felt the author does a good job at explaining the benefits of a plant based diet and touches on avoiding overly processed vegan foods. The fresher the better! Quite a few recipes use coconut oil, which unfortunately hate the taste of. A few options for substitutions would be helpful. Also, I think the biggest downfall of this book is there is not many images of the recipes. Seeing a recipe is what motivates me to try it for myself! I also feel that it would be better organization of the book to have the stable recipes used in other recipes in the beginning, then the meal plans, and the remaining recipes. That just makes the most sense to me. Thank you to Net Galley, the author, and the publisher for the copy of this book.

As an introduction to plant based eating, this is fine. It has a nice meal plan for four weeks with everything you need to follow the plan, including shopping lists. In a lot of cases, it recreates staples of the Standard American Diet (SAD), just with plants. For me, I was looking for healthier options without all the sugars and oils. So I would say this is great for those who are otherwise healthy but for moral reasons choose a more vegan lifestyle. But if you have any metabolic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, etc., this probably won't be a good option. Of note, buy the physical book - the online version was very problematic in the formatting.

The book breaks down as follows: Beginner's guide, 4 week meal plan. Then the recipes: breakfast, smoothies & drinks, soups & stews, main meals, snacks & desserts, sauces/spreads/dressings. At the back are cooking conversions, resources, and indices.

There are a few photographs scattered throughout. Each recipe, has a title, prep time, serving size, ingredients, numbered steps, and nutrition information (calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fiber, sugars, protein). There are tips on the bottom of each recipe (e.g., leftovers suggestions and substitutions).

I imagine this book was written with a focus on protein since that is oddly the concern of many these days (ever known anyone to actually have a protein deficiency?). So I don't really feel the focus is necessary. Instead, this is just a decent book on transitioning to a plant based diet from e.g., a SAD diet. I can't say this would be ideal for weight loss but certainly it is a better way to eat than e.g., fast food and processed food.

The formatting on my computer was kind of all over the place and certainly the layout isn't sexy. It's straightforward though and the recipes are easy to follow (though there is a wide range of ingredients you'll need to track down). The author makes a case for plant based shopping being cheaper than when you buy meats or "premade vegan food" (note she carefully avoids mentioning how cheap the processed food is). But I think the real problem with plant based for many is that the food spoils so fast and money gets wasted. At least with the meal plans here, you don't have to worry about that since you'll know exactly what to buy each week for the recipes.

In all, I couldn't use most of the recipes here - they just weren't healthy enough and that was kind of a disappointment. But if you don't have health issues and want to transition to plant-based eating, this is a place to start. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

This is a great recipe book and does exactly what it says in the title. Each recipe explains where the protein is coming from in the recipe. The recipes are really easy to follow and there are lots of them that I want to try cooking. I like the fact that the ingredients are natural. There is no fake chicken in here, just wholesome beans, pulses and vegetables. It's real, good food, and easy to follow recipes.

Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners. When I think of a beginner book, I think of easy recipes. I thought these recipes were a tad time excessive because each recipe has an ingredient that is a recipe. Not for me. But if I had a chef. That would be another story. Recipes do look good though.

I think this was organized beautifully, especially for those who need that structure to toss out the old and take in the new. I’d say this book has a lot of good knowledge but not to the point where it’s overbearing. Definitely a good starter book for those out there who might be struggling to make the change outright.

I received this e-book free for a genuine review.

High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners is a great book to dive into for beginners and old hats at WFPB eating. It includes a very nice 4-week plan that covers everything from menus, to shopping lists, and how to prep ahead for each week. The author has made the book easy to read, but chock full of great information about not only this way of eating, but also focusing on a high protein path within the diet.
The recipes are clearly written and the included pictures are quite lovely. I eat with my eyes first and while I always wish cookbooks had more pictures and this is no exception, I found several recipes I would like to try just based on the picture alone.
A couple of things that this cookbook did really well for me was including two indexes one for recipes and one for ingredients making the book easy to search. It also included a nice but simple list of common substitutions, and my favorite part was the short list of fast food. If you are looking for some quick ideas that don't involve a drive-through when you are in a pinch Maya has you covered.
Over all a great cookbook to add to your plant-based collection.

Thank you NetGalley and Zeitgeist for accepting my request to read and review High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners.

Author: Maya A. Howard
Published: 09/07/21
Genre: Cooking, Food, & Wine -- Nonfiction (Adult)

Did you know it's one or the other? I saw plant based and thought yum? Well for you perhaps, however, not me. I am a high protein low carbohydrate eater. There is a huge difference (Saw it with my own eyes here.). This beginners book gives the carb count on all its recipes. I can look, but not touch.

The author played as a child "Which herb is this?" She was taught from an early age how to plant and the purposes of herbs and the need for vegetables. This book is written to share her knowledge. She found out upon leaving the safety of her parents what happens without thinking or planning meals.

The book does not overload the reader with details. Howard explains the need for cleaning out your pantry, and not throwing away but donating unopened food that doesn't support this lifestyle. Making a grocery list could not be any easier. She includes the list and serving size allowed. The four week menu plan is readable. Howard writes most ingredients are easily found; however, some will need to be ordered online. This leads into her expressing the need for planning a week in advance. She likewise encourages the use of leftovers. The program is set up for one week at a time. Everything is there for each week independently.

While there are pictures of the foods, the calories, etc., are also broken down for each recipe. From one who does not eat in this fashion, I found that I could follow this easily. She leaves nothing to chance. I was impressed more than with anything stated that the recipes are for a single person. This is first time I've seen recipes for one. The foods looked amazing. The ingredients aided sparking my senses, they sound good. The carb count prevents me from trying any of the recipes.

Four stars -- this book is not for dummies. Minus one star as I didn't check the ease of ordering online the ingredients that would not be available easily.

Okay, this wildly surpassed my expectations. I own over 40 plant based and vegan cookbooks I bought from Amazon. However, none have compared to this one. Not only does it have recipes, it literally breaks down what the plant based diet is, how much protein you need to be intaking, a 4 week meal plan, and a more in depth information in regarding to kitchen tools/appliances you could need to help you achieve these goals. It's such a beautifully written book. Great recipe options with something in there that any level beginner to pro could achieve. I love the information given in regards to complete health and nutrients plus protein needs for YOU specifically. It's an absolute great grab for anyone who's beginning their plant based journey, I surely wish I had this when I started mine! I will highly recommend to others due to it being more than just a cookbook and very handy book for those wanting to venture into plant based lifestyles!

I received this book from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.

I picked out this book to read because I'm a weightlifter who meal preps and like to eat mostly vegetarian/vegan and I was kind of disappointed. This book isn't really for me, the target audience seems to be new vegans who have never meal prepped. I'm not a Real Vegan, I do tend to cook some vegan dishes due to personal preference, but I always bristle a little at preachy veganism. Not my schtick.

High points:
-the sauces looked good
-every recipe has full nutritional info, love to see it
-there are a few recipes that I am genuinely planning on making
-the pictures that are in there are really appetizing
-pre-made shopping lists and meal prep game plans; I don't need these but I can see the appeal

Low points
-the dishes are... not that high protein in my opinion; some main dishes have ~7, which is not enough for me
In the nutritional info, you can see the P/C/F (protein/carb/fat) ratio for all the dishes and they are nowhere near fitting into my macros.
-I am immediately suspicious of any recipe that has onions in it that does not have you saute them first as an aromatic to build flavor, WHY would you throw raw onions into stock if it's anything other than a bland stew?

A final person gripe: as a native New Orleaninan, I will judge tf outta you if you ever serve me these red beans.

I would recommend this book to a person who wants to start vegan meal prepping and who doesn't track their macros.

Great book for a beginner. It does talk about high protein plant based foods, but I guess I was expecting or hoping it to have modifications on the recipes if you wanted to make them even higher protein. It does tell the total amount of protein for each recipe, too. And while i haven’t tried the recipes, yet, there were several I ear-marked that look really good.

There were lots of pages that seemed to have a lot of dead space. I liked the 4 week, week-by-week, plan. I think those who are new to WFPB eating will enjoy this book and find a good starting place to make it easier for transition.

Note - This is a high protein book, but it’s also high carbs. If you’re looking for Keto, this isn’t it. I understood that going in, but I think some readers may not. 4 out of 5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.

This diet and nutrition book includes information on high-protein fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains that help with this new way of eating. There are food lists, menus, and recipes. It is well done and jnformative.. #NetGalley #HighProteinPlantBasedDietForBeginners

I was going to give this book 4 stars, because it's one ingredient away from being fully vegan cookbook and guidebook, perfect for a person who is just starting a plant-based diet and needs to know exactly what they'll need to do so. But I guess I'll just settle for 4.5 stars.
It's one of the best plant-based books, with a list of substitutes and metric conversion chart(greatly appreciated).
I'm not sure if the author doesn't know that honey isn't vegan, because they do have agave and maple syrup in other recipes, so using honey was completely unnecessary.
I will most definitely be making some of the recipes from this book, will recommend the book to others as well, but will warn them about that one ingredient.

Thank you NetGalley and Zeitgeist for providing me with an early copy of this book.

In her book, High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners, Maya A. Howard provides both theoretical and practical information to tackle the possible problem that proper protein intake may cause when dealing with a plant-based diet.

At the beginning of my vegetarian journey I was afraid I would not be able to get as much protein as I was used to with an omnivorous diet, this book would have been a very nice resource three years ago!

Howard’s theoretical section on the topic is thorough and simple enough that the lay person will understand. Additionally, the recipes chosen are all explained step by step and nicely structured. I found that the template followed for the recipes is very clear, as the number of servings is indicated, as well as any possible allergies related to nuts or gluten. Additionally, the caloric and macronutrient breakdown is very helpful, should one be tracking their macros for health purposes.

I await the day the book is published to be able to get myself a physical copy!

Thank you Netgalley and publisher for giving this book.
It has very different recipes all of them seems really delicious. The book starts with protein contents in various vegetables, seeds, grains, etc. Followed by 4-week meal plan and various recipes.
I am definitely going to try out these amazing recipes.

Really disappointed. This isn’t a book with high protein recipes. Most recipes aren’t high in protein. Even if you disregard that high protein is defined as 20% peotein. These recipe aren’t higher protein than any other vegan recipe with some beans. The recipes are also very high in carbs (most readers seeking high protein don’t also want high carb). I can’t comprehend why sweetened almond milk is used both because it is sweet and also bc soy is higher protein 🤷🏻‍♀️

The recipes are also very uninspired- it’s the same recipes that have been done so many times over. I don’t think anymore needs multiple recipes for oatmeal, fruit smoothies, or another recipe for black bean burgers.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)

Feeling kind of meh about this one. I didn't really find most of the recipes to be particularly appealing and contained ingredients that may not be easy to find
