The Chase by Candice Fox is a standalone mystery that is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end! I thought the characters were fascinating and had a lot of depth. The story had so many layers, it was incredible! I loved how so many people were woven together in this book!

I loved the narration by David de Vries & Lisa Negron!

I hope we see more from these characters! I'd love to revisit them!

Really fun book about a prison break, a fugitive on the run, and the woman determined to catch him. After a massive prison break, John, a man on death row, has a chance to prove his innocence and discover who killed his wife and child. Meanwhile, the reader also follows the story of the prison guard whose tragic past can't let her see John as anything but an animal. I loved that the two main people trying to catch the escaped prisoners were both female and tough as nails. So nice to see female characters in those roles.

One December morning on the way to a baseball game at the Pronghorn Correctional Facility, a bus full of officers family members are taken hostage; in exchange for their release the prison must release all 600 minimum - maximum security inmates. Death Row Supervisor Celine Osbourne can only watch in horror as every inmate begins to flee the facility and head out into the Nevada desert. As the fugitive recover begins she sets her sights on one man, John Kradle, who murdered his own family. He made her life hell at the prison especially because he knew how close her past was tied to his. John has spent every waking moment inside the Pronghorn facility planning escape routes if he were ever given the opportunity to flee; what he never planned on was having a homicidal strangler tagging along. John is determined to use this opportunity to clear his name of murdering his family and track down their real killer before he is caught.

**possible spoilers**

I was excited for a thriller along the lines of the Fugitive or Con Air, while the premise is intriguing the execution fell flat. There was so much of the action that was just too far fetched or coincidental for my liking. During the escape there was only one fight in the entire prison not even fighting amongst the inmates, it is unlikely a guarded corrections officer would let an unknown inmate move into her home, and while the escapees include mass shooting terrorists, rapists and murders Celine and media attention is focused on a family killer. A lot of the action is predictable. There are way way too many characters and it is hard to keep track of everyone since the story bounces around between John and Celine's POVs. I had the audio version read by a man and woman but because of the mass characters and subplots it feels choppy. The audio version is read by
David de Vries and Lisa Negron both of who did a good job.

Thank you Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for the chance to listen this audio version of The chase by Candice Fox. I had mixed reaction to this action story that was touted to be an updated version of The Fugitive. I did enjoy the story, but found there were a lot of characters to keep track of and I didn't like most of them, especially Death Row Supervisor, and fugitive-hunter, Celine Osbourne who spent her entire time absolutely hating fugitive John Kradle, even though he kept stating he was innocent. While I enjoyed the action/thriller, I found it was a bit slow at parts. The book could have been edited a bit. However what I loved was the narrators: David de Vries and Lisa Negron did a wonderful job telling the story from different POV's, and kept me interested in the story. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* 3.5 rounded up, this was a pretty good and entertaining read but it was clear from like a fourth of the way in where it was going, not in a bad way really just predictable

What happens when suddenly all prisoner cell doors are opened and 650 prisoners escaped? Prison guards didn’t think twice about letting them out when their own loved ones are in danger of been killed.
The resulting manhunt tracks the various prisoners in their escape and recapture.
Two characters employed in the prison are nicely portrayed. We have the prison warden who tries to redeem herself after letting the prisoners escape on her watch and Cecile who is the death row supervisor. Celine is blinded in her reactions to John Kradle by her own childhood experiences.
John Kradle uses the escape to try to prove his own innocence and punish the guilty person.
This is a fast moving thriller which will hold you in its bonds.
I listened to the audiobook and found the male and female voice adding to the enjoyment of the book.

I love any prison book … but this was a fantastic read. Characters were funny and relatable. I found myself laughing out load at parts. Even better, it is set up that we will have more coming! I will most definitely follow this series, this author. Satisfying read!

The Chase was an exceptional audiobook. starts off with a manhunt for 600 escaped prisoners. One being Mr. John Kradle. I was hooked by John Kradle's back story and was rooting for him throughout the book. This one is packed with drama from start to finish and very well written.

This is my first book by Candice Fox and now I'm going to seek out her other work!

Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for an honest review.

The Chase
by Candice Fox

Stars: 4.7/5 stars

The Chase started off with a bang and didn't let up. When a bus full of the prison employee's family members is threatened unless every single prisoner is released, well, you have a great beginning to a super suspenseful and fast-moving story! Once the prisoners are out, the hunt for getting them back in custody begins. While some continue to commit crimes, there are others, like John Kradle, who continues to proclaim his innocence and is determined to use this time to prove it. This is such a fast-paced and well-written story and the only downfall that I found was that it was a bit difficult trying to keep track of every character, as there were many and a lot was going on. This is definitely a modern-day The Fugutuve meets Con Air though, and I cannot wait to read more from Ms. Fox. The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life as well.

Thanks so much to #NetGalley #MacmillanAudio and the author for allowing me to listen to and review this ARC.

I love Candice Fox’s writing, and for the most part, this is no exception. I was hooked from the beginning, and I loved seeing the different levels of the prison system being discussed as well as how pervasive white supremacy is.

I’m just really torn with the way everything wrapped up. I just feel like the last 15% of the book was sort of meh, which is such a bummer since the majority of the book was really strong. Oh well. I’ll still be reading Fox’s next book.

The Chase AUDIO by Candice Fox is a novel about a prison break, including death row, and the frantic efforts to retrieve the inmates before they can commit more crimes. It is gritty and real and extremely frightening. Interestingly the warden, supervisor of death row, and lead marshal on the case are all women and all the criminals are men. There are some decent men also. It was an inside job so some of the investigating was into that fact and detaining the guilty party. It was a long and detailed book and people had interesting back stories which proved to me, again, that people are not all good or all bad, at least most of them. It was a frightening book, knowing just how desperate and degenerate some of these people were. Very frightening.

It also opened a window to the attitudes of some law enforcement officers who have been exposed to these people for years and appear to have lost any sympathy or even the ability to read a person. It makes me sad to know and understand that. It was a slog and sometimes I felt like giving up. It also makes me sad to know that there are actually some prisoners who are not guilty and are there anyway. It really was kind of a depressing book. The redeeming facts were that some of the crimes were prevented and innocent lives were saved. It was worth the read (listen).

Overall I thought the narrators, David de Vries and Lisa Negron did a credible job voicing this plethora of characters, with such a wide range of ages and ethnicities.

At the beginning of the book an entire prison population is set free in order to get a bus full of hostages released. The book has two focuses: one on the recapture of the prisoners and discovering who masterminded the release in the first place and why? The second focus is John Kradle, a prisoner convicted of murdering his family, and the journey to prove his innocence while he can and find his family's killer. Hot on his trail is Celine Osbourne, the death row supervisor now turned fugitive hunter. Can Kradle catch the real killer before he himself is re-captured?

When the tag line referred to this as a modern "The Fugitive" I was immediately intrigued. With so many prisoners having escaped there are a lot of characters with side stories and sometimes they felt unecessary. I was more interested in whether Kradle would catch the killer and if so, would he choose vengeance or seek justice/to prove his innocence.

Sadly, the narration was a miss for me. The female narrator came across as flat and robotic at times. The male narrator was okay. Both narrators voiced the main characters at one time or another and it was distracting to hear Kradle with a male scratchy voice and then voiced totally different by the female narrator. I'd say if you were wanting to check out this story, skip the audio because reading as opposed to listening will likely help you to stay focused on the story.

I could easily see this being made it into a tv show, if you enjoyed Prison Break, you may enjoy this book too. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this Advance Listener's Copy for review purposes. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

In the book The Chase, author Candice Fox writes about a prison breakout. But not just one or two prisoners breakout, all 650 of them. Some of the worst criminals are set free from the Pronghorn Correctional Facility into the Nevada Desert. Now the biggest manhunt in US history begins, while an investigation as to why the breakout happened and who is behind it. And could this breakout be the prelude to a mass terror attack?
Death-row guard Celine Osbourne is single-minded in her mission to catch one prisoner – John Kradle. But Kradle is using his newfound freedom to solve who really killed his family.
This was a great story concept reminding me of the movie The Fugitive. The audio-book narration was ok. I liked having 2 different voices, but the female voice was very flat and monotone, almost computer-like. I would recommend this book. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I found my first book by Candice Fox enjoyable. I thought the plot was unique, engaging and interesting, however I didn't care for some of the subplots. They felt unneeded and, in some cases, incomplete. Outside of that it was a good way to spend and afternoon.

I just could not get past my own disbelief about the events and reactions of this book and it’s characters enough to enjoy it. The book starts off with action. Immediately, people forget any training they have had and start panicking. I found the writer’s portrayal of the warden almost insulting. There was sniping and whining and not a whole lot of professionalism from anyone in the book.

Argh. I really wanted to love this. I kept putting it off, waiting for a chunk of time to sit down and enjoy . Within 2% I was still batting Wow .. Whoa. Shortly after the writing fell apart. I didn't like any of the characters. I was rooting frankly for myself and the book ending. In the morning the mention of this book will strike I think I read that reaction.

Right away a woman running a maximum security prison for men. Know quickly, she only enters the male death row portion when they are handcuffed and guarded. Feel better? I didn't. The leading Federal Officer is also a woman. I continued reading only because I asked NetGalley for the privilege.

There was no one likeable. The dialogue was childish and chuck full of profanity.

The narrators were not suited for this performance. There are two, a male and a female, however the narration was disjointed. Individually with different material, I would listen to both.

Thank you NetGalley for accepting my request to read and review The Chase.

A mass jailbreak from a Nevada correctional facility sends hundreds of convicts out into the desert, many of them headed for Las Vegas. It's up to U. S. Marshall Trinity Parker to hunt down the convicts, especially Burke David Schmitz. Schmitz is a mass shooter with a mission unfinished and more murder on his mind. Prison guard Celine Osbourne wants to help, but her primary focus is on John Kradle, a family killer. Kradle sees an opportunity to prove his innocence, but to do that, he's going to have to evade capture.
The Chase by Candice Fox takes a somewhat unrealistic, but nevertheless very exciting take on a prison breakout. The action starts on page one and doesn't let up until the end. Osbourne and Kradle are the most compelling characters and the most complicated storyline. We watch Kradle go about looking for proof of his innocence that he has dwelled on for many years in prison. We also see Osborne's determination to track him down, and gradually learn why she is so obsessed with seeing that he faces justice. Parker believes Osborne's priorities are wrong, but can't deny that she has insights into these prisoners that she just can't find anywhere else.

The main thread of the pursuit of Kradle is interspersed with hunting down Schmitz, and foiling whatever plan he has cooking. Osborne and Kradle are the stars here and following their story to conclusion keeps the pages turning.

The audiobook is narrated by David de Vries and Lisa Negron. They do a great job infusing the characters with menace, purpose, and tension. They keep the pace of the story moving and infuse the right amount of suspense into the story.

Fox is a top-notch thriller writer and I am always interested in what she has in store next!

I was provided a copy of this audiobook by the publisher.

When the impossible happens and 600 violent inmates escape from Pronghorn Correctional Facility, an uproar ensues and no one is safe. Celine a death row supervisor is determined to capture John Kradle. Incarcerated for killing his family, he’s proclaimed his innocence for ten long years, but Celine knows he’s guilty and wants nothing more than to recapture him. Kradle has been waiting for a way to clear his name and this is his opportunity. He’s not going to waste it. As the story progresses we learn why Celine is so set on recapturing Kradle. Is there even the slightest possibility she could have let her past influence her? Interspersed with the other inmates, it’s a fast paced story, but disappointing in audio. Told in two voices, Celine’s had no inflection and came across quite stilted, John’s was OK until he voiced another character and it had a Fred Flintstone vibe. I just couldn’t do it, so turned to the pages. Do yourself a favor and skip the audio on this one and read it instead.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Chase by Candice Fox
A special thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the arc of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is probably the most intense book I’ve read this year so far! A bus carrying families of prison workers and inmates to a sporting event is broken down and the driver has been shot. Just has everyone starts to panic they are told that everyone will be shot and killed unless all 653 prisoners are let out.
The prison is in the middle of the Nevada desert and holds some of the most dangerous prisoners. As you get to know the key players their is one death row inmate John Kradle who wants to use his escape to prove he didn’t kill his family.

This book was intense to say the least. The audio book comes out 3/8/2022.

My first book by the talented Candice Fox was the introduction of Hades (Archer & Bennett #1) back in 2015, and then I could not wait for #2 and #3—Eden and Fall: Thriller.

Once you read her books, you know she has a unique style delving deep into the darkness of humanity. I adore her dark humor and how she balances it all to make her characters test their limits. But there is always some goodness from her character's brokenness and tragedy.

PRISON BREAK! Her latest, THE CHASE is yet another explosive wild ride. A chilling, propulsive suspense thriller that will keep you turning the pages. What an opening! Mood set for high adrenaline and action.

650 of the world's most violent human beings pour out from Pronghorn Correctional Facility, a maximum-security correctional facility, into the Nevada Desert, the most extensive manhunt in US history begins. It was a day for families and sports. The families of those imprisoned are held on a bus unless the prisoners are let loose.

John Kradle sees this as a chance to provide his innocence. He was sent to prison for the murder of his wife and child twenty-six years earlier. His story is the most intriguing.

Next, the death row supervisor, Celine Osbourne, has a fixation on John Kradle due to her traumatic past. With this many hazardous criminals set loose to do ultimate damage, she is focused on this man.

The prison break includes serial murderers, pedophiles, rapists, terrorists, and a neo-Nazi. US Marshall Trinity Parker thinks Osbourne could be a little obsessed with Kradle.

With alternating chapters, side storylines provide the background of many of the prisoners. However, as a reader, you are interested in the whodunit.

It was also interesting to see how the prisoners reacted to the outside world. Some just wanted to enjoy their short-lived freedom, others slipped out, and some had a driving purpose. Without money or transportation, their choices are limited.

Fox taps into some critical issues we experience today in our prison system: budgets, overcrowded, understaffed, and innocent prisoners behind bars and on death row.

The author's character development is highly creative, showcasing the different personalities. My favorite part of the story was seeing how this wrapped up with Kradle and Osborne. Also, the two women (Trinty and Celine) are strong-willed and tenacious. It was also fun to hear the dialogue and banter between these two. LOL.

There is more than one driving force, but the Osbourne/Kradle is the most intriguing. Highly entertaining! I was glued to the audiobook and found myself not wanting to put it down.

Candice Fox is a brilliant writer with fifteen books, including her co-authored work with James Patterson.

A special thank you to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for an ARC audiobook narrated by David de Vries and Lisa Negron for a highly entertaining performance.
