Thank you to #NetGalley for the advance copy of #Don’tLookBack by #DKHood
This book takes us back to Jenna’s life before she becomes Sheriff of Black Rock Falls and fills in the back story to her being here.
Great prequel. Can’t wait for the next book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a well written short story, filling in the background of Jenna's arrival in Black Rock Falls. It's tense, fast paced and as always, well written. A very enjoyable read from the author of a great series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

In this short story, we get to read Jenna's story and how she went from Avril Parker to Black Rock Falls' Sheriff. She had to put up with a lot and gave up her entire career. This background story gave us some insight into the inner workings of Jenna's mind. We also get a look at her arrival to Black Rock Falls and her relationships with the townspeople.

This was a fast-paced, quick read. If you are a fan of the series, you will enjoy reading this. It's always nice to get some background info on your favorite characters. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Detectives Kane and Alton #14.5

Jenna has been working undercover for four years and now she's ready to take down the most dangerous man she's ever met - her husband, Michael.

This is Jenna's story, telling us how she arrived and quickly became sheriff in Black Rock Falls. This prequel tells us when Jenna worked undercover and Jenna isn't quite the tough person she is today. We learn why she is so security conscious and protective of the vulnerable. This is a short but fast paced read. It's also tense, gripping and thoroughly enjoyable. I would not read this book as a standalone but I would advise you to, if you haven't already, read this series in the order they were written in. You won't be disappointed.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #DontLookBack in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Don’t Look back, a novella length read covering Sheriff Jenna Alton’s backstory.

Avril Parker is an undercover DEA agent, looking to expose her husband Michael’s drug dealing, but when events take an unexpected turn she has to expedite her exit and the takedown. When the cartel boss threatens her she becomes Janna Alton and moves to Black Rock Falls.

I thoroughly enjoyed Don’t Look back, which fills in the blanks in Jenna’s history and explains how she became sheriff of Black Rock Falls. It is a short, sharp read which packs a punch, particularly at the beginning when Avril is dealing with Michael. You could cut the tension with a knife, even though she obviously makes it out safely. I was so invested. The second half of the novella, which deals with her first case in Black Rock Falls, is fairly standard stuff with the bad guys getting their comeuppance.

It is not a sophisticated read, things happen and punishment is delivered, but it’s very entertaining and held my attention throughout, therefore I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.

I thought this was quite enjoyable.
It's certainly an easy read which made it a good one for a Saturday afternoon on the sofa as it wasn't challenging.
I was left a bit flat by the ending to be honest as I wasn't sure which way it was going but I imagine fans of the author will love it.

Jenna Alton hasn't always been the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, in fact she hasn't always been Jenna Alton either! As Avril Parker she was an undercover DEA agent working to bring down a drug cartel. Married to an extremely dangerous man she had no idea how her own life would be impacted by her job or the sacrifices she would need to make personally.

This is the second companion volume in the Kane and Alton series and relates her back story in the same way as that of her Sheriff's Deputy David Kane in Lose Your Breath. That was a compelling read and this is also an entertaining page turner which gives an insight into how Jenna arrived in Black Rock Falls and why.

Although I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the Dave Kane version this is still a very good read worthy of 5 stars because if this had been released first it would have easily been that. Also introducing Jake Rowley and other familiar Black Rock Falls residents it details Jenna's new life in a town where, she was told, very little ever happens! As book 14 is released soon that clearly was a bit of an understatement! The only one missing from this storyline is ME Shane Wolfe and selfishly I hope he will get his own background story very soon.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it highly as an excellent prequel.

As D.K. Hood did with David Kane, in Don't Look Back, the author provides the backstory to Jenna Alton... and hold onto your hat, it's a doozie. As a huge fan of this series, I love that we now have the history behind both of these very special characters... and considering where the author left off in the last full-length novel, I cannot wait to see where Alton and Kane go next!

This series is one of my all time favourites. I am back in Black Rock Falls where some really nasty serial killers seem to gravitate to this beautiful setting. In this fantastic five star read we find out in detail what Jenna was doing to make her flee to Black Rock Falls. A fast paced thriller with plenty of tension and suspense and so many heart in your mouth moments. This author certainly knows how to tell a story and this story grabs you by the throat and shook me like a rag doll. Packed to the rafters with everything I expect from a crime thriller and so much more. This is a definite MUST READ!!!!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

Don't Look Back is #14.5 in the Detectives Kane and Alton but is book two of the prequels. This book is written a little differently than most police procedural stories. Maybe because it starts out with Agent Avril Parker being under cover as a wife to the son of drug lord. It plays her as being a little more light hearted instead of rough and tough. This isn't bad, just......different. I haven't read the others that come after (but written before) but this one was entertaining and rewarding at the same time. After being the wife of a man that thought nothing of beating Avril/Jenna, she takes this issue on with her when she relocates to Black Rock Falls. One of the first cases involves a man that beats his wife. It was nice to see this as being important to the story line and probably future stories I hope to read.

D.K Hood really has the power to hook you into her books! Her stories revolve around Black Rock Falls (why you'd want to live there is beyond me) and Jena Alton, Kane and Wolfe. You know that the three characters didn't arrive at Black Rock Falls because they wanted to live there! They're there because they are running from something. Now, we know (through this book) why Jena wound up there! As a former FBI agent, she's been forced to work undercover for four years to bring down one of the worst criminals she's ever faced.

The fear and terror at being caught is foremost in her mind and D.K. Hood makes sure the reader feels every single moment of Jena's anxiety. I would definitely recommend this as a must read. I couldn't put the book down until I was done! Wow! Exhilarating, fast-paced, grabs you by the heart moment!

Thank you #NetGalley for AC!

"This story is for those who have been hurt, trampled, bullied, battered, or used and have had the courage to move forward--I salute you." (D. K. Hood)

"Don't Look Back" is the prequel to "The Detectives Kane and Alton Series" by D. K. Hood. It's the short story that fills the readers in on the background of Jenna Alton before she became the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, Montana.

I have not read the series, but this was exactly what a prequel should be. It was short and to the point. The writing was excellent and very enjoyable to read. I can see why this series is so popular. Just the peek I got from the prequel was perfectly executed and very interesting to read. I look forward to reading more about Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this excellent e-book. I really appreciate the honor of reading it! "Don't Look Back" will be published February 8, 2022.

Great insight into who Jenna Alton is and how she got to be Sheriff of Black Rock Falls! A quick read which is quite fascinating! I feel as if I’ve been allowed behind the veil of Jenna’s past. Fans of the Kane & Alton series will love this book!

The Alton and Kane series is just amazing.

The author already revealed some snippets of the backstories of both great main characters, but there was still that feeling of wanting more. I really wanted to find out how it all started and what they went through.

This book is giving us everything we always wanted to know about Jenna. It’s giving information about her previous job and why she is where she is and how she got there.

She is very determined and confident. The way she arrives in Black Rock Falls and takes over is wow. She immediately starts dotting the I’s and striking the t’s by wanting to defend the abused ones and making the ones on their high horses step down.

The town love her for it, but some don’t feel the same way and want to take her down straight away.

Jenna has been through a lot and although she is scared and scarred, she won’t take a step back before the case is closed.

I loved it. I still have to read Kane’s story and I am already convinced it will be as good as this one. 5 stars.

Thank you

Kane & Alton is one of my all time favourite series so I was so pleased to see the short stories of the background of Kane and Jenna (I read Kane's previously).

Delving into the passed history of Jenna makes you appreciate her character even more when you realise the trauma and sacrifices that she has been though/made and it helps to fit the pieces together of her complex nature everything just makes more sense.

These short stories really compliment the series well and they are a must read for Hood fans.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Don’t Look Back’ written by D K Hood in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

The Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, Jenna Alton, is having recurrent nightmares and her Deputy and partner David Kane suggests she tell him about her past history so that he can help her put it to rest. In this short story we find out what happened four years ago when Jenna was DEA Agent Avril Parker, married to Michael Carlos so she could get evidence of his and his father Viktor’s involvement in the making and distributing of drugs and child smuggling. Having destroyed their cartel and with a price on her head, Avril Parker undergoes cosmetic surgery and is given a new identity to become the sheriff of Black Rock Falls where she feels at peace and that she’s finally come home.

‘Don’t Look Back’ may be a short story but it loses none of the excitement and action of the full-length thrillers in the series. Having learnt previously of Deputy David Kane’s past life, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading about Jenna and how she came to be the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls. I was so involved in the story and the danger Jenna was in, I read the book in a half-day as I was turning the pages quicker and quicker needing to know if she’d get to safety before the Carlos family could grab her back. This is a must-read novel for everyone who’s enjoyed the Jenna Alton and David Kane series based in Black Rock Falls and I’d like to thank Ms Hood for giving me the chance to read about Jenna’s past.
