The story here is good, as is the plot, but the main character makes some strange decisions. All the descriptions, both of characters and places, are a little lacking, but this makes the pace very fast.

Thanks very much to #NetGalley, the publisher and #D.K.Hood for the opportunity to read and review "Don't Look Back", the riveting origin story of Sheriff Jenna Alton.
Agent Avril Parker has made the ultimate sacrifice in order to bring down a dangerous drug cartel - she married into it in order to bring them down! After months of indignities, including abuse from her 'husband', Agent Parker is about to make the big bust - and then she discovers something even more sinister is afoot.
After a great loss, and a late-ni9ht escape, the Carlos family is brought down, and Avril testifies to their many criminal activities - which leaves her with a price on her head.
So, once again, Avril Parker makes a sacrifice - her identity.
And so is born Jenna Alton: new face, new name, new career in Black Rock Falls, where - according to newly deputized Jake Rowley - 'nothing ever happens'; and 'it's not like serial killers are hiding out in the forest'.
Thrown right into a probable murder/arson case, Jenna is quickly assimilated into the lives of the residents of Black Rock Falls - although she does come within inches of a major disaster.
Herein we learn Jenna's back story and look forward to more tales involving Dave Kane and her team.
Highly recommended even if you have not read the rest of the series.

This is book #14.5 in the Kane and Alton series. It is a novella sized read and whilst it's slotted in between the main story books, it could be read at any point in the series, although I would recommend reading it in series order.

We've heard Kane's story of how he got to be Deputy Dave Kane and now it's time for Sheriff Jenna Alton to tell her story. We've heard throughout the books in the series that Jenna was an DEA agent who ended up in Witness Protection, hidden away as the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, but we've never found out why or how until now!

This is a fairly short story but it was great to finally fill in all the blanks from Jenna's story. The book is full of suspense and tension and it holds your attention throughout. Jenna is a great character who I've loved through all the previous books, but it's great to finally understand her and see why she runs the Sheriffs Department like she does. Jenna's previous life is scary and full of danger, and I'm now waiting with anticipation for future books to see whether her past finally catches up with her! Would definitely recommend not just this book but all of the series as they are all great reads!

So I wasn't sure what to make of this book, to start with it it was like an airport thriller (if those still exist) but then it got a lot better and I enjoyed it. It really gave me an insight into one of the main characters; but I really struggled with some of the ideas and actions they seemed very unbelievable to me. I can normally get passed that on reading but this time it was just a bit too much for me.

I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.

I fell into this series just a few months ago so I really have to read the rest of the early books. I have enjoyed the short novellas explaining the back stories of both Kane and now Jenna. Don’t Look Back explains how Avril Parker morphed into Jenna Alton. Jenna has nerves of steel. I loved how she slid into a small Montana town and took charge. I can’t wait to catch up with the other books in the series and look forward to more Kane Alton stories.

Finally, the book that answers all those questions you've had throughout the series. I only discovered this author recently so it was great to read this prequel before getting stuck into her back catalogue. It's a really good read. I was on the edge of my seat as DEA agent Avril Parker crept around the estate searching for the evidence that is needed to bring down the Carlos family and their murderous regime.. The tension in this story will have you .biting your nails to the quick and preparing for a sleepless night because you won't be able to put this book down..

A suspenseful read. After learning how involved Jenna was with the cartel, and what she saw and endured the reader understands why she is so security conscious and why she is so driven to help those who are abused.
I liked her introduction to small town life when she got to Black Rock Falls and the discovery of Aunt Betty's Cafe. Little did Jenna know how dangerous small towns can be.
A must read for fans of the Kane and Alton series.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

Love love love this series. This adventure takes us on Jenna’s backstory and really gives insight into how Jenna evolved into the person she is in the present.
Overall, I didn’t find her backstory quite as engaging as Dave’s but it was still a good solid quick read.

Absolutely loved this, couldn’t put it down, so much so, I was finishing it at midnight on a work night.
Even if I wasn’t a huge fan of the Kane and Alton series I’d have loved this, the prequel to Jenna’s story and how she came to be in Black Rock Falls. A tense read that grabs you from the off

Don't Look Back by D.K.Hood is part of the Detectives Kane and Alton series and is the origin story for how Sheriff Jenna Alton came into existence and made her way to Black Rock Falls. The storyline is a thrilling one full of action and suspense. This story was a wonderful window into what Jenna is made of. I greatly admire this character. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Fabulous prequel about how Jenna Alton came to be. It’s quick but gives you some great depth on how great a character she is. I highly recommend this series about this dynamic duo… Kane and Alton. Five stars.

A must read for fans of this series! Jenna's backstory is beyond what I imagined. It's great to get a better understanding of her character and this story really explains a lot about her. Her past as an agent was a whirlwind of danger, intrigue, suspense, and strength. I also really appreciated the glimpse into her start in Black Rock. The way the author sprinkles in characters and future events is very cleverly done. I'm so excited for the next book. This series tops my list of have to reads!

After this entire series and hearing Kane's story I'm glad we finally get Jenna's. I couldn't even Imagine going through what she did and saw. I knew the cartel was involved but I had no idea it was to that extent. And those poor children. So crazy this actually is happening in real life too. 😔 Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read this! One of my favorites series.

Omg I just love love love DK Hood I can't help but get so entangled in these characters. We have been told Kanes back story and only snippets of Jennas.

Don't look back is Jenna's story. After years away from the FBI DEA, Jenna has been hiding in plane sight in black rock falls. Even with extensive plastic surgery, name change and completely knew way of life Jenna is still terrified of her old life catching up with her. Kane asks Jenna to tell him what her mission was and why she is in black rock falls. So begins the story of how she infiltrated the one of rhe biggest drug cartels in the country and found out more than she bargained for.

This was hands down one of my favourite in this series, although I think I've said that about every book thus far so maybe I just love them all. It was really good to find out why Jenna is so security conscious and why she needed to be put in witness protection.
I enjoyed reading her marriage to Michael and its strange because it felt like reading a completely different woman which I know was the point she's under cover but she is so docile and compliant not the Jenna we know and love. But when we discover with Jenna what she undercover there is no doubt that the cartel would kill her given a chance and moving to black rock falls makes sense.

I also love that we get to follow her with her first real case in black rocks and how she really gets into the town spirit and how she is loved early up in her arrival. Hood also manages to incorporate some of the back stories of some of black rock falls local serial killer's within Jennas story setting the scene for those creepy characters.

Honestly I highly recommend but there's no surprise there. As this is a prequel you can start with books 1 to 14 first and give this a read once it's released or the other way round. But honestly I think it comes ro play perfectly at this point in Jennas story. 5 EASY STARS

thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and DK Hood for an ARC of Don't look back in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.

Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't realize, when requesting this ARC, that the author had already produced an entire series based on the two protagonists. Personally, I think this prologue would be better read after reading at least a few of the books in the series. The story plunges the reader right into a flashback detailing the life of the heroine during her time in deep undercover, and then establishes how she ends up in the semi-rural town where she becomes sheriff (I assume, the book ends before this happens). The transition and arc of the story was a bit too abrupt for me, and the writing was fairly basic - but I can see how, more fleshed out, the heroine could grow on you and the reader become invested.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this captivating short story by D. K. Hood. This is the origin story of Jenna Alton's career in law enforcement, beginning with her involvement in taking down a merciless and brutal drug and trafficking cartel from the inside. Forced to change her identify and reinvent herself completely, she finds herself in the mountains in what should be a quiet, uneventful town. It turns out to be anything but quiet and uneventful when Jenna is immediately thrust into a case of domestic violence that puts her own life in danger yet again.
