Description

A riveting atmospheric suspense debut that explores the dark side of a small town and asks: How can we uncover the truth when we keep lying to ourselves?

“Herrera has a gift for drawing vivid characters and rich settings. A voicey and compelling debut that is not to be missed.”--Karin Slaughter

After reckless behavior costs NYPD detective Leigh O’Donnell her job and her marriage, she returns with her four-year-old daughter to her beautiful hometown of Copper Falls, Ohio. Leigh had stayed away for more than a decade—even though her brother and a trio of loving uncles still call it home—because, while the town may seem idyllic, something rotten lies at its core. Three men in town have drowned in what Leigh suspects to be a triple homicide. She hopes that by finding out who killed them, she just might get her life back on course.

Headstrong and intuitive, Leigh isn’t afraid to face a killer, but she has to do more than that to discover the truth about what happened to those men. She must unravel a web of secrets going back generations, and, in doing so, plumb the darkness within herself.

Perfect for fans of Mare of Easttown, this taut debut is a haunting look at how the search for truth often leads back to the most unlikely of places.

The Hunter ended up being different than what I expected. The book focuses on a former NYPD Detective, Leigh O'Donnell, who after reckless behavior loses her badge, and her husband. She isn't far from rock bottom when her brother offers her a job in their hometown, Cooper Falls. Three teenage boys have just mysteriously drowned, and Leigh knows she must go to her hometown to try and solve the case. As Leigh investigates the crime, she learns what is going on in her hometown is bigger than a single case, and much more sinister.

I enjoyed the twists and turns through out the book. It was very well written.

Small towns hold big secrets. No one knows this better than Leigh. After an incident at work leaves her shaken and unmoored, Leigh decides to take her young daughter back to her hometown of Copper Falls. Her brother Ronan, a police officer in Copper Falls, requests her insight regarding a mysterious group of deaths. Once Leigh starts looking into the mystery, she falls deeper and deeper.

I really did enjoy this book. I love the whole "something's dirty in this small town" genre and The Hunter did not disappoint. What a fantastic debut! I cannot wait to see what else Jennifer Herrera has up her sleeve!

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This was a sound mystery that held my attention all the way through. It is one that will have you staying up late because you need to know what happened next. As everything comes together and the past and the present collide, this complex mystery will keep you guessing till the ending, which was well thought out and amazing.

Giving away too much of the plot line would be a disservice to future readers. The story surrounds Leigh, a former NYPD detective who has lost her career and her marriage. She heads back to her hometown in Ohio in hopes that she can help her cop brother solve the mysterious deaths of 3 men.

Go into this as blind as you can and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Leigh has returned to her hometown to do what she does best - catch a killer.

Follow her as she tries to work her way through a web of small town gossip, local politics, ghosts of relationships past and, most difficult of all, her own fears.

If she can find her way perhaps more than one mystery can be solved.

Once you start this, you won't want to put it down!

Wow, such a breathtaking story with a deep meaning. I thought this would be like every suspense thriller I've read, however, it was not. It kept me interested then whole time and I just could not put it down! The ending... when everything was put together, made me gasp in awe that I didn't see that coming. Then the story of her past and present aligning the way it did, got me choked up and teary eyed. Such a beautifully written book!

This ARC was given to me by NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All comments above are my true opinion after reading this book.
