This is a super cute read for kids.  My children enjoyed reading it.  The ones who read it on their own are ages 9-14 while I read it aloud to everyone as a read aloud after we had finished the Little House on the Prairie series. 

This goes along well with the little house books as it has the same thing of children on the prairie.  You work hard so you can survive but also so you have food to eat.

Cute book that I highly recommend you give a read to.
