For the past six months, Sloan McCray has studied the street he lives on. "It was his first winter in Weaver - the first snow had fallen in October and hadn't stopped since." Sloan is a deputy sheriff in town. His sister married into a large and predominant family in Weaver. She convinced him to move there and see if it was somewhere he could settle. Sloan grew up in a family that moved around a bit too much. He doesn't stay in place for long periods and isn't sure if he will stay in Weaver or move on to somewhere else.
Then, Sloan gets a new neighbor. Abby Marcum bought the house across the street from Sloan. She is the new nurse at the elementary school. She has moved from the town over and is trying to set up a family with her new home and brother. Abby is raising her younger brother, Dillon, who is 8. Abby is about 23.
New Year's is upon the town and Abby moves in. Sloan and Dillon strike up a friendship and from that, Abby begins to be attracted to Sloan. She tries to be polite and stay away but he keeps coming around.
The story takes place in Wyoming. Sloan has some secrets and issues that he hasn't dealt with. He has been floating around and only settled in Weaver to be near his sister. Abby helps Sloan find what he really desires but is she enough to keep him grounded?
The book really takes its time in setting up a relationship between the two characters. Their first attraction, asking each other out, then their dates, getting to know one another and their first kiss. The author did a good job with slowing down the relationship between the two characters.
I liked this story. It isn't a Christmas story. It is a winter tale. Sloan is flawed because of his past and Abby is having to deal with a lot at a young age. There are several supporting characters that help lightening up the book.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. The characters were interesting. The conflict was plausible, if not a bit obvious. There are many references to sex and this is not a clean romance novel.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
